is a Gauss meter relevant to test the strength/torque of the capstan magnet?

Thanks for the quick upload. Are all the capstan housings the same part used in all Sony vcrs?

+Fred Chew Yes all the models that used this chassis used the same bearing, however they did make a running change in production. The color of the bearing top indicates if it is a new or old design.

What kind of oil do you recommend?
I do like those Sony SLV decks like that one, last of the good from the 'left slot front loader' era if I remember right... you know, before they all became single board center loading garbage.
I've got an slv deck that looks just like that so I'm tempted to look in there and see if it's got the old bearing housing. Just to make sure I understand, does that bracket you left out keep the stator from moving vertically/ or in other words prevents it from falling out?

I didn't leave it out. Look at the end of the video. As for oil just light oil like seeing machine oil. These decks weren't bad, but not great. The blue loading gear was a common failure as was the pinch arm and p6 guide lubricant. Lots of mechanical problems with this one.

Sorry I meant to say the one u left out on video, I did see it all, thanks. In retrospect those sony decks of that era had parts that are just way thinner then the older ones. And the use of plastic springs even for clips kinda scares me. Hell at least it has a tooth belt drive and it looks cool. Worth fixing.

those orange tooth belts they used in later VCRs were much better than standard rubber belts they never seem to wear out, quite surpised it's not fitted with a belt tensioner like Panasonic do on the decks.

There is a tensioner. There is a spring that pulls on the bracket for the drive pulley on the left.

+Navpers 47 I have a half dozen Sony VHS machines. This is the only one that the blue gear is not broken on. All the others the blue gear is split.
