It might have something with the voltage regulating circuits. If you bought it from here in the USA, the previous owner might have inadvertently not ran it properly or had the wrong converter or something.
But the powering down often is just a safety mechanism to prevent damage when there's resistance or a fault detected. Try greasing the mechanics and tracks, and getting some new belts in it.

Jethro is renowned for his impenetrable Cornish/west-country accent. He also manages to perform blue comedy without actually resorting to the f-word.
The 50's, 60's and to a lesser extent 70's output of the Shadows is great. I'd describe them as a British equivalent of the Ventures, though having typed it out I think calling the Ventures the USA equivalent of the Shadows is probably more factually correct.
My father used to solve those 'wobbly plug' issues by taking out two sticks of chewing gum. He'd chomp up the gum - delicious I'm sure - but then carefully fold the conductive metal wrapper and wedge it in the slot against the pins. Probably the worst possible way of doing it! NOT one to try out at home!!!
The 'Jethro' stand-up dude is... relatively well known - at least in his native south-country. His isn't what you'd really call general 'British Humour' though, he is fairly localized to Dorset/Devon/Cornwall; the more countrified south-west. My cousin and her husband are huge fans, unsurprizingly as they live plumb in that neck of the woords and went to see him live quite a few times back in the mid-nineties. The accent really gives him away!
You should get a proper Europlug to NEMA adapter. If not a full blown 120VAC to 220VAC transformer.
Looked it up, Jethro did appear a few times on TV. The tapes when released: Not For The Vicar - 1996, and For The Battle - 1999.
Oh, and Cliff Richard is pretty popular over in Britain.
I'm amazed to see a Jethro tape make it to the States...he releases a new DVD every Christmas time it seems but is rarely, if ever, on TV. (If you want some more British VHS tapes, I have cupboards full of the blighters!)
I ended up giving mine away to charity shops after having my collection put to hard drive. sadly even charity shops and any shops would not even take them. i put them on gumtree for free. no takers and ebay for 99p, no takers. they went to a dump in the end for landfill.

Interesting. I'm not sure about this, but keep your eye on the green power light as it loads tapes. I think I see it flickering a bit likely when it's loading motors are drawing current during threading. This could mean the power supply isn't happy and the shut-down problem could get worse (along with the flickering)... or it could be that it just isn't working on 120 volts as well as it should - fyi Also, nice umatic deck, the 2600 is a beast! My first was a 2610 which is essentially the same.

my neighbor growing up (was a college proffecer so reltivly wealthy) had 2 100 disc changers.
both set up to the same system run in a linked mode
the disc were all loaded perpendicular to the ground in cicle that would spin around. it would pull out selected disc to play kinda like a jukebox
it was an awesome system that actually was alot faster then yould expect with having to swap disc. i think it had the first song of each disc at least partially loaded with how fast it cycled.
he did eventuly change to digital once the qulity got high enogh. he stores it with almost no compression so the 200+ cds take up alot of room
What were you trying to show with the TBC comparison at the end? All I can see is a higher black level with TBC.
Also, for the benefit of our American viewers I had best provide a translation of what Jethro is saying:

* In the UK, Hoover is a generic term for a vacuum cleaner. It is also a verb (as in: to hoover the carpet).
** British spelling and pronunciation of ass.

Lucky Lips was popular, and Livin' Doll did okay. Every fan of British comedy knows The Young Ones because of the TV show. The rest are kind of obscure to most Americans....
I like how he "upgrades" with such old format equipment. Not disrespecting.. just found the statement funny. watching him play with Beta and VHS or even the dreaded Laserdisc so reminds me of my childhood and digging thought my dads old routy cases to find BNC, RCA, Phono... ect converters trying to rig (as a unskilled kid) said format player to some crappy Black&White TV or the like.. Poor been needs to find a old mobile studio TV monitor. My dad had one. Classic color CRT but had every available I/O standard of the day. (except SCART) But happy retro hunting! As they say "Out with the new and in with the old"
John Simpkins How exactly is are laserdiscs "dreaded"?
True it is a uncompressed video/Audio format. But had little advantage over VHS. Limited available content and a more cumbersome storage and usage. VHS was smaller, more protected from wear and tear. The laser disk unlike modern CD/DVD or more age appropriate DIVX CD. Had ECC to correct data in small scratches on the read surface. So it is no surprise to me that it was not a more widely used format. But that's just my opinion.

wesleyjc80 Maybe it's different in the USA but 90%+ of VCRs here in Europe will automatically detect that a tape is NTSC or SECAM format tapes rather than PAL and depending on your settings output it either as a PAL or NTSC signal. As most (all now we've gone HD?) TVs support NTSC I'd advise outputting in that format if the tape is that format.
Maybe it doesn't work that well on 60hz power?
" Jethro " has a very small following even in the uk. i am 46 and live in the uk and i love comedy and i have never seen jethro. i have never seen him on tv and do not think he has been on tv.
Erm Cliff richard was a huge star in the 60s and early 70s, still has a following but since his recent publicity and fleeing of the uk in the huge tv stars pedo ring case his name goes unmentioned and will probably end up being wiped from history as it seems most of the 70s and 80s tv UK have been.
The Manic Miner Where to start...? Jethro is very popular on the live circuit, certainly popular enough to pull 1,500 to 3,000 a night. His seemingly annual DVD (previous VHS) releases are widely stocked by record shops and supermarkets so there must be popular. He was an occasional face on TV back in the 80's and 90's as he is part of the Freddie Starr, Jimmy Tarbuck and Jim Davidson (what have those three got in common LOL?) circle, but the somewhat blue and non-PC nature of his material meant he never broke into the mainstream. I am not a fan.
The early 70's were actually the absolute commercial and artistic nadir of Cliff Richards' career. He never fled this country, he revoked his citizenship (which he only held because his parents were UK citizens, not because he was British born) for tax reasons and now lives in Barbados. And he did this 4 years before the ridiculous raid on his home (whether he's guilty or not we'll have to wait and see) I am not a fan.
