  • Beating a tough boss is something we take great pride in - which is why we get mad when we discover in the following cutscene that actually we lost, better luck next time. Here are seven times that exact thing happened in videogames. Thanks to commenter Time Dragon for the suggestion, and subscribe for a video like this every Thursday!

Similarly weird situation: you absolutely hand it to a boss, either because you are good or have spent way too much time in side quests, only for the cutscene to indicate that it was a "close fight."

i 100% completed botw and was so worried about the fight against ganon that i had about 500 pieces of cooked meat alone, all my op weapons, as many arrows as i could collect....needless to say i barely needed any of that. could’ve finished it with the mastersword alone -_-

People actually would throw objects at Baldur as a sort of game because he was not harmed by anything. Until Loki learned of the situation with the mistletoe and fashioned an arrowhead from it, then handed a bow and the arrow to Hod who was blind and urged him to join in on the fun with everyone else. So Hod fired the arrow and it ended up killing Baldur.

    • @Coldheart322
      @Coldheart322 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

On the one hand, the health bar is a representation of your progress in a fight. Having a villain escape when on low health makes some sense. It's the ones where they get up and beat you down that really annoy me. Hey, if I was fighting all this time an noticed I was barely actually hurting him, can I escape instead?
Hmm, interesting twist. You get the enemy's HP bar down, and you realise that was only a layer of armour you broke through. The fight continues but now you can escape or continue fighting them. If you continue the fight gets harder, but beating them again gives you some reward while not actually killing them off.

    • @andoryuubushido7191

How about the first time you encounter Malak in Knights of the Old Republic ? You can absolutely wail on him, but when his lifebar is empty, he paralyzes you (something you have survived many times up to that point) and your companion does a heroic sacrifice by staying behind so you can escape. I remember the first time I saw that, I was screaming : "No, you fools ! We can take him ! Come on !"
It's made even worse by the fact that, since when you *do* fight Malak properly at the end of the game, he is using strange Force powers to boost himself, implying that he *wasn't* holding back the previous time you fought.
To this day, I am still contemplating writing a fanfic of what would happen if you just killed him during that first encounter.

I feel like *every* Tales of game has one of these moments, too. As far as boss fights you can win, but the cutscene after shows you losing, at least. In most cases, though, the game at least rewards you a little extra for winning. Though, there was *one* fight in Tales of the Abyss where, after winning, I got 0 xp, 0 gald, and negative grade. It was kind of embarrassing, after such a hard fight.
I also remember a fight in an entirely different game, where I had a defense skill I'd used not long before activate on the attack that was supposed to defeat me to trigger the next cutscene, causing it to miss and let me finish the battle a win. It was kind of hilarious, all things considered, since that one was just a glitch. Obviously, there wasn't any sort of different cutscene.

@@woodpecker8116 you (for the most part) are always playing through a story completely crafted by a hand full of people to be cinematic and provide tension, drama, and weight. The problem is that most gamers have been programmed to believe they should win all fights handily and not lose due to the mass majority of games having zero mechanics outside of hp, power meter/mag size/mana bar, and damage. So if you need to face someone and lose for the story people will riot if they actually have to lose so it becomes a choice of unbeatable boss in gameplay where people will complain about lack of control and having the game taken away from them or, loss in the cutscene after the fight which just leads to even more complaining. For game developers who have very small time frames to make these games it can be incredibly hard to create a good reason outside of these two options for you to lose a fight.

I love the "if X is gone" stuff in ME3. Did you know you can convince Mordin not to fix the sabotaged cure? Wrex and Eve both have to be dead, so it's not worth it, but it's possible. He'll still WANT to cure it, but he'll concede that now (with Wreav in sole control of an autocracy) is not the time to do it. Mordin will fake his death, go into hiding, and work on the Crucible. If Mordin's dead too, his replacement can't be persuaded though and will try to cure it even with Wreav in sole control.
It's also kind of possible to get Thane through the game. If he's alive but you ignore his email and never meet him on the Citadel, then he won't show up for that Kai Lame sequence. I mean, he's still going to die of space lung cancer, but he doesn't actually die in the game. Legion is actually the only squadmate through all three games that absolutely 100% must die.

Genichirou should be on this list. Not only does he activate his cutscene superpowers at the beginning of the game in that even if you drain *both* health bars, he still cheats and cuts off your arm, he also runs away like a coward the second time, and the third time kills himself before you get the chance for payback!

Great list but what about Baldur from God of War, the endless "I feel nothing" xD

I was expecting the penultimate Vergil bossfight in Devil May Cry 5. When you beat him, there's just a scripted counterattack that leads into the cutscene, which slowly leads into the final bossfight

Super easy first fight against Edea: Just summon Carbuncle so he casts reflect. She'll waste her turns casting Dispel on everyone. Then just resummon Carbuncle. She'll barely ever manage to get in a hit and you can keep casting other GFs and simply beating her down until she's "defeated". It doesn't work on any other fights with her, but it makes that first one super simple to get through.

Ah. That Kai Leng boss fight really messed me up... I flew to the Citadel, went to the shooting gallery and shot empty every gun I had. Which, as a soldier, were *_all of them._*

This video probably should come with a light sensitivity warning.

Andy: turns up at the end of video with a self-proclaimed "unskippable cutscene"
Me: "Oh-Ho? You challenge me? We'll see about that" Proceeds to close browser tab after liking the video, but crucially before the "unskippable cutscene" ends.

I love how inconsistent all of the characters in mortal kombat are. At any given time a simple human like Johnny cage or proven weakling like Baraka could beat a, "God", like raiden or badass like Shao Khan. 😄

The reason Kai Lang is so annoying is that he’s controlled by cutscenes and thus beyond your ability to defeat. Very immersion breaking, not unlike the ridiculous final chapter.

Not only that. He's also a weak boss outside of cutscenes. So it's even more frustrating to watch Sheppard lose to him like a chump.

@@aquelegabriel absolutely true! I regularly and easily crippled him only for him to be revived by the game. Very frustrating and immersion breaking.

Cut Scene rescues of crap bosses is one of the staples of gaming. ME2 also has it with the Arival DLC where you win against waves of enemies but will lose to a cut scene, then you can kill the insane boss but lose again in a cut scene.

Also from MK9, when you first beat Shao Khan in Outworld as Liu Kang. The cutscene even shows Liu Kang driving a flaming fist through his torso.
Only for Shao Khan to have survived, Quan Chi coming up with a new plan for Shao Khan to take Earthrealm (invasion with Sindel) and he proceeds to smack you down until you actually defeat him for the final battle as an empowered Raiden.

What about eve from Neir Automata when you nearly killed eve and he drew power from the network
