Ugh, the recent one? With garbage missions? Add to the fact, people don't realize "new ideas" and "progress" are not synonymous with good. You can have garbage new ideas and progress in the wrong direction.
Yeah the only ridiculous thing about his playable segment is the weird red vergil boss fight. I get whyy they didn’t use green, a little close in tone, but yellow was there too
So fun fact: The PS3 version of Arkham let you play as the Joker as well in his own versions of the challenges, including it's own mini-story as well as chances to fight Cash and Commissioner Gordon in the combat challenges. I also love the fact Vergil matches Dante in multiple games using only ONE style against Dante's 4 (or more in some cases). Dante is so badass that he's a master of none but has no real weakness, Vergil is THE master of one but is so damn good at it he overcomes his weaknesses. The Sparda brothers are terrifying, no wonder Mundus was fearful of them.
The one section in Spider-Man 2 where you got to play as Venom for a bit was sick as hell - you got to rampage through Oscorp, and they let Venom fully kill Kraven the Hunter, showing probably the most blood in the 2 games combined.

Though Cynder has a terrifying reputation, she's a pretty easy boss fight when you take her on yourself in a New Beginning, but take control of her two games later in Dawn of the Dragon, and she's so OP that even shield enemies that Spyro can't seem to overcome with his elemental powers on full blast can be surmounted by Cynder in one low-cost stunlocking move. Once she's on our side, she's terrifying enough that we could just let her fight the war all by herself.
Hell, when I played DotD-having never touched the previous two games btw-I just spent all my time as Cynder and only bothered with Spyro when absolutely necessary.
Dragon Age Origin has a whole dlc where you play as darkspawn, the main antagonistic force of the game, in an alternate universe where the warden died in the beginning of the game and you are the force killing their friends.
Not sure this counts as a "boss" per se, but being able to play as Sauron or the Balrog in Lord of the Rings Conquest was epic! I had to take a good long look at my choices after I stood in the center of hundreds of dead hobbits 😅
DJ Octavio is the final boss of the first 2 Splatoon games and the first boss in Splatoon 3. During the final boss of 3 you get to take control of the mech he pilots in his fights against you in order to take down the final boss of that game. So you get to play as a final boss in order to take down a different final boss.
Jack The Ripper in the DLC of Assassin's Creed Syndicate also deserves a mention. You play the opening mission of the expansion as the serial killer himself and get to terrorize the citizens and policemen of London for a short period.

Honestly? Part of me wants to list Yukari Yakumo from the Touhou series on here. She is introduced in the seventh mainline game of the series as enigmatic, a mastermind who'd rather just sleep in all the time, the most powerful youkai in the world (more than Yuuka Kazami, whom is also terrifying and playable in a couple games after fighting her), and able to manipulate any boundary is a way she can think of or desire. Within her gaps she opens to get to and from anywhere is an eldritch horror. So? In TH7, if you choose Reimu as your playable character, Yukari tags along so you can swap to and from her. But it doesn't end there. In a couple fighting games in the series, you can fight against Yukari and her eldritch powers, and have the occasional train thrown at you, or you can play as Yukari with those same powers, train-throwing included. Mind the gaps. Otherwise, yes, I'd also say Yuuka Kazami is a good contender. Eldritch powers and barrier manipulation? No. Raw strength, a house of demons, a seemingly sadistic sense of humor people remember more than her good manners, and a love and defense of flowers that would make even a certain BotW character think is a bit much? Well, Yuuka is playable in TH 5 and 9. Both characters love carrying around parasols, too. It's a fun coincidence, surely.
In Breath of Fire 4, not only do you play part of the game as the person you end up facing at the end of the game (who is so much more powerful than you that he can solo most fights without any danger of losing), but one of the choices you make just before that fight has you merge with him and fight your former allies.
Theres also The Evil Within, where in one of the DLC's, you play as Safe Head, the one monster who is probably the mascot for the series, and with good reason too. He is terrifying.
The Twisted Metal games could be on this list, if unlockable characters count. You can unlock Minion in 2 and 4 (and I think 3 as well), and Super Augur and Super Slamm are unlockable in 4. You could argue Calypso in 4, but you never face him as a boss before you can play *as* him.
im surprised Ned Flanders from The Simpsons Wresting never came up since Simpson was referenced, he was usually the last character you fought against and he absolutely destroys you on higher difficulties (the Goro of Simpsons?) and when you unlock him you get to use all the BS moves he used against you with the same devastating effect free second life included.
Already seen my boy Ganon and i just wanna say that the fact you play as him after the big victory Link and them pull off is just the cherry on top. Plus rocking with Zant and Ghirahim is also great
SPOILERS In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, you get to play as Venom. This is before you fight him as a boss, though, which helps establish how much of a powerhouse he is as a threat.
I can think of a few examples most recently in Spider-Man 2 we can play as Venom near the end. Another example that comes to mind is in the Assassin's Creed Syndicate Jack the Ripper DLC where there are sections of the story where we can play as the Ripper himself
Power Stone. You can unlock all bosses, even the final boss monster, as playable characters. It can be fun playing as Final Valgas and decimating opponents with his projectile attack.
I remember how exciting it was to play as M. Bison in Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition, using his Psycho Crusher endlessly against your opponent, until you found out Capcom had nerfed the move.
I'm actually shocked that no fighting game bosses made the list. The SNK Bosses that were not nerfed until KOF 15 came to my mind, especially because of the famous bans of Omega Rugal in Latin America...
Technically not a character but at almost just nearly the end of Gears of War 2, you get to pilot a Brumak and briefly become walking artillery. (unstoppable) Fun times….
Coming in hot with "No Bowser from Super Mario Odyssey"??? I had that part unspoiled for me so when we got to the end and I realized what the game wanted me to do, I was practically squealing with shock and glee. Top ten gaming moment there.
Shout out to Venom from Spider-Man 2. You spend about ten breathless minutes wrecking house and folding people in half in one of the most unbelievably brutal sections of gameplay I've seen in a while.
Very surprised not to see Spiderman 2 here as one of the most recent high profile examples of this. My brother-in-law literally squealed with excitement when he got control of said boss.
Hyrule Warriors Ganondorf is SUCH a satisfying power trip! Especially compared to his sluggish outings in Smash. I hope an Age of Calamity sequel or expansion let's us play as the TotK version someday. You can't make him a shirtless samurai and NOT let us play as him!
@@lugismansion2400Unfortunately I have to agree. Even if we do, it likely won’t be until the next major title release. The original Hyrule Warriors could’ve had a sequel to bring in even more characters from the other Zelda titles it left out - would’ve been awesome playing as Kotake/Koume/Twinrova or Vaati.
General Avlora from Triangle Strategy perhaps? She's one of the more difficult bosses in the game, having high hp, attack, and defense, and in addition, she fills the Dark Knight archetype, so she just gets nastier as she gets hurt. Plus during chapter 14, if you fight her in the gardens she also gets her ultimate, Bloody Cross. But if you do the Golden Route, she ends up defecting and joining your team, and even though she's been nerfed from how she is as a boss, she still is one of the strongest units in the game. And while Bloody Cross is terrifying when used against you, it feels hecking awesome to use it against enemies.
What about the Keeper from The Evil Within? U don't just get to play as him but he gets his own DLC in which u get to learn more about him & his quest to save his daughter
Wait around Untill You Die Crok is actually Killer Croks uncle. Also, Ardyn certainly was... a Villain... That did Villainous Things... and i honestly cant remember his motivation at all. Weird game, ffXV
honestly Ardyn is probably one of the best FF villains by far, dont think the main game really delves into his backstory though so you dont really get any hint to his motivation unless you play the DLC or watch the short anime they put on TH-cam. to sum it up he sacrificed his own health to cure his people of the star scourge and ended up getting screwed over by his own brother and the god and was erased from history and imprisoned for 2 thousand years before being freed from his island prison by the Niflheim Empire, all round a pretty valid reason to want to get revenge
@@axlejones6281 Thank you for sticking up for my boy. Ardyn is my favorite villain, hands down! Also, Bahamut used him as a pawn because, being the god of war, he wanted Ardyn to mess things up for him for laughs. Ardyn wanted to die after his betrayal and Bahamut said "No, I need you for a thing in 2,000 years". His fight at the end not being anything of the spectacular, god-mode caliber that you normally see of a endgame FF boss just shows how tired of it all that he is.
In the Wrath of the Lich King expansion for World of Warcraft, I seem to remember that there were lore quests where you got to see climatic battles in the past, and got the chance to play as both Illidan from Burning Crusade and as the newest BBEG Arthas, laying waste to wide swaths of enemies. I also remember doing one where you infiltrate Undercity, and Jaina giga-charges all your skills and stats so that you can single-handedly tear through the normally raid-level armies of opposition in your way like tissue paper.
"Do you know the definition of insanity?" Vaas does, and you get to play as him, as well as Father Joseph Seed, and Pagan Min in the Far Cry 6 DLC 1, 2, and 3 called "Insanity", "Control" and "Collapse", and something tells me you're going to be making extra parts to videos over, and over, AND OVER AGAIN! (say the last bit in Vass' voice for maximum effect).
There was a glitch in the selection menu in Melee where you could play as master hand. My friends and I almost got it to work one day but we were never right on with the button sequence. You had to do something with the B and A buttons in the menu and player 3 would be master hand if you did it right. Ours froze for a few seconds but it failed
I thought Bioshock would be on here. The end of the first game you become one of the boss big daddy and the second bioshock you are the boss big daddy.
As much as I loved DMC3, the video should have had Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition where Vergil was once again playable in his own campaign. Also in the final battle, you finally fight against Dante, showing how badass this battle between brothers truly is. Vergil also has the best banger of a track in the series too.
Vergil was also playable in 4 with it's Special Edition as well so was Lady and Trish with Lady being the "Nero" sections and Trish being the "Dante" sections
@@lugismansion2400 but they were not bosses in the game. In previous games, yes, but no one can take that crown from Vergil as "the best boss you can play as" in the series.
@@that1jamo yes I know Lady and Trish wasn’t bosses, I was adding them in too because they as far as I remember their first time being playable was in DMC4, I know that wasn’t the main topic of the video but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to put them in

Lord of the Rings: The Third Age has a mode where you get to play as all kinds of Evil enemies, bosses included! These are the likes of the Witch King, Grima, Durin's Bane, and even Sauron (eye)!~
How about the Keeper dlc from the Evil Within? Not only did you get to play as him, but you fought every other boss in the game and used their weapons.
In the DLC for Assassin's Creed Syndicate, you get to play Doctor John Leslie Stevenson: "My name is John, but my friends call me Jack" *ripping* *noise* Yes, that was a Time After Time reference (and not the song that came after the movie) Hey, where's Jane, is she the boss somebody is playing right now 🤔
I mean the AI was made to be somewhat fair and not just endlessly spam Pillar of Wrath over and over. If he did that, literally no one would ever be able to beat him.
@deathbykonami5487 they have talked about it before when they talked about 2 tropes, but in both cases I've seen they got it wrong. Then there was another video in which they just bashed it
In Hotline Miami there’s a boss fight part way through the game with a a guy clad in biker gear. After completing the main campaign, you unlock a second one where you play as the biker, even playing the same boss fight in reverse and killing the protagonist, Jacket. The surreal nature of the game makes in unclear which version of events was the ‘real’ one, if either
One example of this I always loved is in Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. Every time the villain team takes out a hero, you get to play the character who does it.
There's a lot of Kirby games that let you play as Meta Knight (Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland, Super Star Ultra, Planet Robobot, etc) and/or King Dedede (Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Return to Dreamland, etc.) but I'd like to give a special shout to Kirby Star Allies for allowing you to play as a bunch of bosses from throughout the series and Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe for an entire playable Magolor mode. Actually, better put the entire Kirby series. Just to be safe.

I think Byleth might be better suited for the list of protagonists you fought against in the next game.
dont forget Orochi The Serpent King
Lu Bu was a beast
In Dystany Warriors, Lu Bu peruse you @@Creativemnds
The Twisted Metal games could be on this list, if unlockable characters count. You can unlock Minion in 2 and 4 (and I think 3 as well), and Super Augur and Super Slamm are unlockable in 4. You could argue Calypso in 4, but you never face him as a boss before you can play *as* him.
Sweet Tooth was also unlockable in 4. And man did he make it easy mode with that super.
im surprised Ned Flanders from The Simpsons Wresting never came up since Simpson was referenced, he was usually the last character you fought against and he absolutely destroys you on higher difficulties (the Goro of Simpsons?) and when you unlock him you get to use all the BS moves he used against you with the same devastating effect free second life included.
Already seen my boy Ganon and i just wanna say that the fact you play as him after the big victory Link and them pull off is just the cherry on top. Plus rocking with Zant and Ghirahim is also great
Not to mention Skull Kid with Majora’s mask, Yuga, Volga, Wizzro, and Cia. Shame they never added Vaati.
SPOILERS
In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, you get to play as Venom. This is before you fight him as a boss, though, which helps establish how much of a powerhouse he is as a threat.
MGS4, playing as Metal Gear Rex was by far the most impactful for me
The worst part is when you play as them, they are never as powerful as when you're fighting them.
Except for Vergil in DMC 5. Disgustingly strong
Welcome to Fighting Games
@@ThePseudologist bonk. Bonk. BONK. BONK!
In the more recent smash games, you can also play as Sephiroth. So there's that. Sephiroth who enters smash by casually one shotting Galeem.
Ah yes you get to play as the boss from one game in a completely different game franchise. This totally fits the prompt./s
You gotta have Venom from Ultimate Spider-Man on this list.
Man was the FIRST and FINAL boss of the game, as well as a playable main character.
Hyrule Warriors Ganondorf is SUCH a satisfying power trip! Especially compared to his sluggish outings in Smash. I hope an Age of Calamity sequel or expansion let's us play as the TotK version someday. You can't make him a shirtless samurai and NOT let us play as him!
i doubt we'd be getting another Zelda Warriors type game, not that they didn't do well, but we don't get that much spin off Zelda games
Does Jetsream Sam from Metal Gear Rising count, I wouldn’t call him terrifying, but damn is he awesome to play as
General Avlora from Triangle Strategy perhaps?
7 Terrifying Bosses you got to play as.

Yakuza 0 finally gives you the chance to play as Majima, and he also gets a little side story in Kiwami 2 which has a few callbacks to the events of 0
I don't think anyone needs to tell Andy about the Yakuza games xD
Wow. Majima really is everywhere.
@@FelisImpurrator Including Ichiban Holdings as an applicant!
You can also play as the Joker in Arkham Asylum, which has the additional benefit of actually being a good game.
Crazy thing about General Raam is that if you get tired of playing as him in Gears of War 3 you can go play as him in Killer Instinct!
I remember being able to play as The Keeper from The Evil Within. The Executioner DLC was so fun.
"...He just picked the wrong lip."😂😂
Neo cortex is not someone you could call "Terrifying" but you do get to play as him in both crash twinsanity and it's about time!
Andy really loves that shirt
At the end of Arkham City, you play as Joker inside Batman's head. It's a really freaky surreal thriller of a finale.
Glad to hear OxBox (or at least Andy) is pro-Waluigi! Congratulations for being on the right side of history
I thought Bioshock would be on here. The end of the first game you become one of the boss big daddy and the second bioshock you are the boss big daddy.
9:16 looks like radahn from Elden ring, but much less detail
Hey, I’m your boss, Terry. I don’t know what playing as me means but I’m sure it’s something dirty, I have contacted HR.
Magus in Chrono Trigger for the Commenter Edition!
I thought Mike was going to go with "Killer crotch" as the new name for Joker....so close
@@that1jamo yes I know Lady and Trish wasn’t bosses, I was adding them in too because they as far as I remember their first time being playable was in DMC4, I know that wasn’t the main topic of the video but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to put them in
@@lugismansion2400 Trish was playable as an unlockable character in DMC 2, but... it was DMC 2.
4's Special Edition was Lady's first playable appearance, though.
There's also a challenge map pack DLC in Arkham Asylum where you get to play as the Joker.
In the DLC for Assassin's Creed Syndicate, you get to play Doctor John Leslie Stevenson: "My name is John, but my friends call me Jack" *ripping* *noise*
Yes, that was a Time After Time reference (and not the song that came after the movie)
Hey, where's Jane, is she the boss somebody is playing right now 🤔
Playing as Venom in Spiderman 2 was the best power fantasy level in the game.
I remember playing 'The Third Age' on evil mode, and i still dont get how I ever beat the Balrog in the light campaine he was SO Op.
Totally forgot that mode existed.
I mean the AI was made to be somewhat fair and not just endlessly spam Pillar of Wrath over and over. If he did that, literally no one would ever be able to beat him.
Being able to play as Venom in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was absolutely amazing
Or how about the Big Daddies in Bioshock. You get to be one in the last hours of the game, and in Bioshock 2, a Big Daddy is the protagonist.
No one talks about BioShock 2 for some reason.
@deathbykonami5487 they have talked about it before when they talked about 2 tropes, but in both cases I've seen they got it wrong. Then there was another video in which they just bashed it
@@deathbykonami5487in one in outside extra about things you couldn't do because glass, the other a video about fates worse than death
In DMC5 special edition they do actually replace the Vergil fight with Dante. Neat.
Id love a version of using Master Hand in Smash Bros that allows motion controls to use him, like smashing you enemies with your own hand.
Nothing more terrifying than seeing Andy wearing a normal-sized watch.
Bendy and the Dark Revival had an opportunity like this too! You get to play as the massive Bendy at the end, which is pretty rad.
When I first was introduced to RAAM as a kid, when he killed Kim, I have to say him slow motion walking out of the smoke and ash was peak badassery
