Fun fact: The theoretical perfect time for a speedrun of Super Mario Bros. is 4:54.26. Speedrunners have optimized that game to near perfection trying to shave off every frame possible. Not watching Summoning Salt has never caused someone so much pain.
If only they watched Kyle Hill’s video on speed runs. My initial guess was about 3.20.50 But Gav kind of nudged him on when Tom said his initial estimate of a half hour. At that point, he knew he had it in the bag.
They have it to within one frame at this point if I remember correctly. And that frame is nigh impossible for a human to save. The penultimate frame itself was near impossible.
I'm convinced that whoever ordered these questions put the video game one last, knowing damn well that Tom knows nothing about them and Gavin literally plays video games for a living 🤣
@@Seamalicous I'm not a hot sauce enthusiast nor do I have access to these specific brands in my corner of the world. But if I may say, based on what I saw here, it seemed that The Last Dab was pure unadulterated pain for Tom, where Da Bomb was a similar amount of pain for Gav, maybe a little lower. But Gav was feeling physically ill for a good couple of minutes where Tom seemed to be mostly just in intense pain. I wonder if it's because of the sauces or just the different physiological responses to them.
Watching the end twice for the amazing subtitles made me realise... Gavin set Tom up for the last question by casually mentioning half an hour as an example, after he realised Tom really had no sense of scale. Nice work Gavin!
Tom initially said his thought was half an hour but milliseconds called it into question. Gavin shot that down by saying even if the game is half an hour all the runs end around there so milliseconds still count. the classic "you are wrong... keep being wrong"
So long as they don't get too personal or ask too many probing questions. If you've been watching Tom long enough, you know there are certain topics that are entirely off limits and i think that's fine.
@@maxnaz47 I imagine there is some level of understanding between the hosts and guests on which subjects can be brought up, or at the very least which make it into the video.
the minute that last question went up, i knew the questions were set up perfectly. they made Gavin climb up Everest normally, then they dropped Tom to the summit without an oxygen tank.
The subtitles on this channel seem to have become Caption+’s place to showcase what’s possible, because there’s almost always something special that adds to the experience, whether that’s text size for emphasis, fun colour effects to make it clear that multiple speakers exclaimed the same thing at the same time, or translating from shepherd’s whistle tones to human language.
@@ragnkja They really have. They've impressed me so much that any time someone even mentions the captions in one of Tom's videos, I plug the service and their website. I just want more people to use the service because the results are so good.
The way Tom's face lit up with pain was just...amazing. Never been so delighted to watch two grown adults scrabble at a quart of ice cream. Truly top-notch content. Subtitle team, you really knocked it out of the park on this one. Also, it's a funny fact that the world's largest IKEA isn't even in Sweden, it's in the PHILIPPINES at the Mall of Asia. Mall of Asia is the world's fifth largest mall and is owned by SM Prime. They own other megamalls (or as they call them, SM Supermalls) in the Philippines like SM City North EDSA (13th largest), SM Megamall (15th largest), and SM Seaside City Cebu (16th largest). The Philippines sure knows how to build a mall. That aside, if the question was asking squared feet, Tom would've been closer as in squared feet, it's 699,654.2
Everyone is rightfully praising the subtitles at the end, but I think _(deathly shudder)_ at 20:37 deserves appreciation, in addition to the fantastic work they do on every video!
I really demand they do this more now, because it’s incredibly funny seeing Tom and Gav doing things that are in no way related to what their jobs are under high pressure
Feels like whoever came up with the questions figured Tom "deserved" the last dab, since he's the host of the show.. And to be honest, it only feels fair seeing how Gavin has 8/9 of them so far haha
He didnt really. His explanation of the milliseconds being important if people are going for the record is true. But yeah, it does suggest a low number 😅
Gavin was such a genuinely good sport for this. I haven't watched his content for a while so randomly seeing him in this collab was like running into an old friend. It's a nice feeling. :)
The thing about da bomb is that its the only sauce on the show made with pepper extract, which is almost pure capsaicin. They used to have other extract sauces in the earlier seasons, but decided to abandon them because they barely even qualify as a sauce and taste unpleasant. They kept da bomb to still have one knockout "stunt" sauce in the lineup.
Also, the version of Da Bomb that they used (the one with the white nuke, so Da Bomb Evolution) is as far as I know actually pepper based (ghost pepper) and not extract based, so Gavin at least got spared that pain.
Knew a couple people who liked very spicy hot sauce - they both said that DaBomb Beyond Insanity tasted much spicier than the Scoville rating implied, even when tasting it next to other sauces, but couldn't figure out why. Also that it doesn't taste good.
I feel guilty for laughing so much but after Gavin did the majority Tom's reaction at the end felt like justice. and the contrast between the initial disappointment at the seeming mildness and the later severity was great.
it's for our education, so he's taking 100 for the team so we don't have to.. Sh*tt he could not even finish the video.. Legend has it, that tom is still suffering from Irritable Mouth Syndrome to this very minute.. You can hear the hyperventilation from space, which explains the strange sounds picked up by NASA
The utter chaotic nature of the usual Gavin vs the orderly almost-poshness of Tom is such a hilarious contrast. I could never see Tom crawling on the floor like Gavin did.
Word for the wise: don't do this with chips (or any light snacks for that matter), do it with something you can get a good chew on. It's better for suppressing the impact of the sauces, get it to hit more slowly, and to help you focus on other flavors. There's a reason they do it with meat on *that show*
@@thechineserussian oh, that show. I thought it was something insidious, macab, and unmentionable... the kind of thing that if you see in the dark, it stares at you, and you never forget.
From what I've read, Da Bomb is actually hotter than anything else there as it's a concentrate intended for use in things like chilli, so he really took it like a boss.
@@Loebane not really, the last dab is hotter. But the trick is the balance Da Bomb is balanced like a extract-laden brick. That's why it tends to nuke THO guests, while everything after feels so much nicer.
This is why the hot ones format works so well - they are both in it. When there’s an element of chance it could mean that just one person is doing it, which creates an off dynamic. You need a situation where you’re going through it together
Except Sean has done it so many times he knows what to expect, though he is so sympathetic, because Apollo is still very, very hot, even when you've had it multiple times

Perfect Tom Scott Plus collab would be Tom Scott Plus Achievement Hunter. Get hjm in the office, teach him to play GTA or Mario or something Kinda like when Gavin taught Fiona the way around GTA
This entire video was worth watching as a slow build up to the laughter I had at the end. Tom always has the BEST reaction. The fact he tries to always be descriptive, but fails this time because of the pain, makes it even funnier.
I rewatched with subtitles, and the "bellows" moment has me almost shouting... I usually feel bad in front of those videos where they try super hot peppers. But idk why Tom and Gav make it so funny.

@@tiffanysandmeier4753 It might also have been a content decision. Gav is the type to try forge through without milk because it makes the reaction funnier
@Cal Alaera Actually, there are many features that youtube does not make available natively, but still supports. If you go deep enough, you can even find videos that have things like animated subtitles. I personally make subtitles that have a karaoke effect, meaning that the syllables light up as they are going across. It's not like it's automatic, but you don't have to make each individual line of subtitles if you have the right program.
@Cal Alaera You can upload subtitle files, which by their nature have more capability in them than YT's tools (some of them are not supported tho I believe), so you could make the subs in a separate program and then upload them to your video. That's how you have these subs that change positions, color, almost animated.
@Cal Alaera TH-cam supports VTT subtitles, which are a subset of the standard ASS subtitle format. It can do quite a lot of neat tricks, and I recommend looking it up.
@@Daktyl198 VTT is not related to ASS at all. TH-cam supports it though, and also supports their own format, YTT, which can do some things ASS can, look up YTSubConverter.
FYI, the "Da Bomb" they use on the show is different from the one sold on their website and shown here, because the online store as a policy sells hot sauces made with only natural ingredients. The original Da Bomb uses artificial capsaicin extract, so the makers created a new version using only natural ingredients that can be sold on the online store. I haven't tasted the new Da Bomb, but I have tasted both the original Da Bomb and Apollo. It's not close, the Da Bomb is much worse. Apollo at least has the merit of being tasty, Da Bomb is just poison.
The new Da Bomb isn’t much of an improvement. It isn’t disgusting but it’s not good either, just hot. Apollo is probably one of my favorite hot sauces because despite being really hot it has excellent flavor.
I think the 'order' is in the 'scoville scale', not which one is worse. The scale is based on the amount of capsaicin or something, so da bomb FEELS worse, because of the composition, while the others have more direct capsaicin.
Exactly, capsaicin measures spice to get an objective level of heat, but some people take different spice different ways, for example, I have habanero and occasionally ghost pepper on things all the time, but even the mildest of salsas or spices where the spice is in your nose makes me fall on my knees. Also, a habanero Avacado salsa and a habanero tomato salsa might have the save Scoville scale, but the Avacado one would be slightly milder in my opinion.
The SHU is designed to measure heat, so one would expect the later ones to be hotter (assuming that's what you mean by "worse"). If anything, based on its flavour - or, more accurately, lack thereof - I suspect Da Bomb has the most chemically extracted capsaicin. I've had multiple 1,000,000+ SHU experiences, including stuff where you have to wear gloves, sign waivers etc. Da Bomb Beyond Insanity was more unpleasant than any of them as a baseline (despite being only about 130,000 SHU), because of how bad it tastes. So when you consider that someone seems to have messed up or misunderstood or is trying to fuck with Tom and / or Gav by using the 500,000 SHU Evolution version instead of Beyond Insanity, it's no wonder the gradient doesn't seem as smooth as usual.
Also Hot Ones uses Da 'Bomb Beyond Insanity which is milder than Evolution. But i will say Beyond Insanity tastes horrible which makes it feel way worse.
"I'm so sorry" "I could have put 27" "You could have turned this down" "I've touched my eyes..." "Oh no!" This is the greatest. In all seriousness, as someone who doesn't tolerate pain well, seeing Tom Scott go and do all this stuff is inspiring.
The reason why speedruns are often calculated with the milliseconds is that runs can get so optimized that the only improvements are often frames faster than the previous world record.
At that point, I start to doubt it being a matter of skill, it feels like when you're shaving frames, it almost starts to become an exercise in luck or probability. When a world record run relies on a bug or miscalculation in the engine that only happens 1/10 times, how could it not be luck based? Like, you have to be good enough, to do it as fast as possible, but I don't think the record is an accurate representation of skill based speed increases
@@left4twenty that’s literally a massive thing in speedruns, people literally need the perfect run with the perfect random chances to shave off only a milliseconds on another persons tun
@@left4twenty it still takes quite a bit of talent to consistently play at frame perfect levels that allow you to achieve certain times that may only be a few milliseconds difference
@@left4twenty It's actually on the contrary, when a game is so optimize that milliseconds counts, the speed runners need to make the most difficult frame perfect strategies consistently (some even found on TAS), to make a WR.

They never put anything in the captions that doesn’t correspond directly to what’s going on in the video, so the effects and “overly descriptive” captions only ever enhance the experience.

The problem is the interactive aspect. A spreadsheet program would need a way to interactively enter data into cells, then calculate. That won't be doable until the early 70s at best. He would have been closer if the question was about databases, which were IBM's bread and butter from the earliest transistor machines.
It's a bit tricky, there were all sorts of specialized electronic computing devices before the home PC. But particularly a spreadsheet, yeah, I think you need a significant GUI to be more accessible than pen and paper.

That's the issue I have with a couple hot things because it doesn't taste like much and just burns unpleasantly and I don't mind spicy things
Also, the version of Da Bomb that they used (the one with the white nuke, so Da Bomb Evolution) is as far as I know actually pepper based (ghost pepper) and not extract based, so Gavin at least got spared that pain.
The 🌶 lore 😮 ❤❤❤
Thats the wrong Da Bomb. The one on Hot Ones is Da Bomb Beyond Insanity the one they ate here was Da Bomb Evolution

@@howdenking Of course Gavin wasn't wrong, but that doesn't mean it's not an effective lead-up to lead Tom astray.
There's nothing artificial about it. It's not even "capsaicin extract", since that would be extracting something from itself - it's pepper extract.
I'm pretty sure this is the case.

This is the greatest.
@@Nmoren and I think at that point, it's less about skill, and more about luck... but, go on, I guess?
@@left4twenty it still takes quite a bit of talent to consistently play at frame perfect levels that allow you to achieve certain times that may only be a few milliseconds difference

I don't think that was lost on anyone or any of their pets and furniture.
I could see Gavin's logic in the spreadsheet one. After all, the question said "electronic", not "digital".
Yeah, I was thinking something along the lines of a Turing machine. I definitely lost that question.
Yeah. My own guess was 1965, with pretty similar logic to Gav's.
But then it also said "spreadsheet" rather than "database" or such, so it probably has to be graphical. I guessed 1981 like Tom.
