    Casey- I needed that video. Although I’m 61, I’m in the same conundrum. I’m coming out of an A3 and want the HP. I’ll miss the sunroof, but at 61, a GTI is out of the question. What’s got me concerned, the 6 speed is not in anywhere near in demand as a DSG. The MK 7.5 will most likely be the last in the USA for a MT. Will that eventually outweigh the demand loss and value? Do I bite the bullet and order a Nardo Gray or close with a DSG? Or pick up an in stock Iridium Gray, Black, or Red with the MT?
    Curious to know your final decision.

    • @caseyliss2458
      @caseyliss2458  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, I'd say do whatever it takes to get yourself in a 6MT, since - as you said - they're going the way of the Dodo. As for me, I did end up getting a Golf R, in blue, and I have no regrets... other than the missing sunroof. ;)
      I'll be absolutely stunned if this is *not* the last new three-pedal car that I ever buy. But I tell you what, I do really love this car.
      Good luck! Let me know what you decide here or on Twitter: @caseyliss.

    11:50 My 2001 BMW has those sensors; they're primarily used for headlight aiming, so that if you load the rear of the car you don't blind oncoming traffic. I think the squat/dive characteristics are usually evaluated by accelerometers and gyroscopes built into the stability/ABS modules.

      Also, the radio power button deeeeeply bothers me in my 2016 Golf. If a passenger uses that to adjust the volume is flusters me to my core. C'mon Volkswagen! But seriously, you can't go wrong with the GTI or the R. I still say you should get the GTI. Sunroof > 4WD, IMO.

  • @felixbechtoldt

    Nice Video Casey!
    The one suggestion I have is that it is not that important, that we see you talking about details about the cockpit or the touchscreen. (In both instances you shot over your shoulder, so we could see your face)
    Rather show those things in detail and for longer. The added benefit of that, is that you can do more voice over parts which have substationally better audio.
    Keep up the great work and I am looking forward to the next aftershow on ATP...
    ... or will it count as follow up?
    I guess John will have to decide that ;)

  • @johnwjeromejr
    @johnwjeromejr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Casey, you actually have another choice. Being that you like the GTI, you can get one with a sunroof, then get an APR Plus tune which preserves your warranty along with adding around 60 HP & TQ. That will surpass the stock HP/TQ for the Golf R and you get to keep your warranty for a lot less money than a stock R (lacking only AWD if you can get by without it). If you want to get really crazy, get the R and go APR Stage 2 (as I did) and you'll have a truly insane performer in a sedate looking car for the cost of a Mustang GT.

    • @irishbob817
      @irishbob817 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does APR preserve the Warranty in the US only? I'm in Canada, and have access to several options for Tuning. I can take my '18 R to 350+ HP easily, and without it costing me much, with Unitronic. But, my Warranty goes out the door. As it is, my R (with DSG) is very close to my friends '16 Mustang (manual) GT when it comes to 0-60 and 1/4 mile stats. A Stage 1 upgrade would make my R a GT Killer. Any suggestions?

      You're right. I was thinking of the GTI/WRX vs R/STi back when I was shopping them two years ago. The GTI has Park Distance Control and Park Assist where the R only has Park Distance Control.

    @meteorplum 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Nicely done, Casey. I very dutifully paused ATP’s aftershow to watch this first. Ditto what Marco and John said, and I’ll be specific about B-roll usage:
    You should do multi cam of what you see driving, along with closeup shots of the instrument cluster and the center panel, and inset the latter into the former. The scene where you were exiting the highway and you talked about how “magically” the car did the right thing would’ve greatly benefitted from us being able to see the instrument readings. Keep up the good work.

    About the kickdown switch: does the Golf have a settable speed limiter in addition to cruise control? I drive a Renault van for work, and the kickdown acts as an override if the speed limiter is turned on.
    Great video! Keep it up!

    Duuuuude I HEAR you on the gorgeous pretoria wheels!!! It seriously has me considering getting a used 2017 model vs a 2018 model.
    2017 PROS:
    - Pretoria wheels
    - Older front fascia (not feeling the new one)
    - Analog gauges (not sure I like the look or trust reliability of screens long-term)
    2018 PROS:
    - Newer infotainment features
    - Incredible 6 year / 72 mile limited VW warranty *** HUGE ***
    - LED front and tail lights
    - Extra gear on the dual clutch auto
    I'm really conflicted, here. It seems like you really think things through... what would you suggest???

    • @caseyliss2458
      @caseyliss2458  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a tough call. For me, the warranty is the #1 reason to buy new. Especially given my troublesome history with my BMW. Furthermore, wheels are easy to replace; you can look on 1010tires.com for "Replika 195" wheels that are cheap knockoffs of the Praetorias. I hear you about the longevity of the digital dash, but to my eyes, I'll take the flexibility. You don't see me rocking a Blackberry in 2018, do you?
      As it turns out, at the end of last month, I actually did buy a brand-new Golf R. In Lapiz Blue. 😎

    Very well done and informative. I would appreciate if you would mention braking performance and how brakes feels, which is also something you ommited in your previous car reviews. Are they big Brembo with drilled disks? Are they bitting hard, spongy?

    MK7 GTI owner and avid ATP listener here. One other thing to factor in is that unlike R's that usually go for close to MSRP, GTI's can be had with a huge discount. If not in your state then maybe a neighboring one. I drove from NY to VA to get $6K off MSRP. Stage 1 is a $650 proposition to take a GTI to stock Golf R power. I know you've mentioned you didn't want to deal with any tunes but it is something to consider still.

    one of the best reviews of the Golf R out there. agree with a lot of the issues you mentioned (the lack of a sunroof being paramount). also strange that, given the price point, Golf R doesn't have a heated steering wheel or an auto-tilting passenger side mirror when on reverse. what did you end up getting to replace your BMW? I'm in a similar boat.

  • @marcvalme7732
    @marcvalme7732 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Casey, looks like VW listened! For 2019 they're adding an option for 19" Pretorias (black package), but now I'm torn, do I get a great deal on a 2018 Golf R with ugly rims, or do i pay sticker on a 2019 with black Pretorias. What will you do?

    • @caseyliss2458
      @caseyliss2458  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, I'm not in love with *black* Pretorias, but I did notice the same thing.
      I actually bought shortly after I published this video, and I'm rocking the not-as-pretty Englishtown wheels.
      Were I to do it now, I'd probably take the deal. You can get darn near perfect replicas of Pretorias for very little money; that's what I'd do. Hell, play your cards right and you can do so with the money you saved off the '19.

  • @johnwulsin

    What are your thoughts on the digital dashboard? You mentioned you liked how the navigation could increase in size when in use, making the speedometer and tachometer smaller. But does it look nice? I feel like I'd miss the aesthetics of physical dials. Purely an aesthetic choice, as I definitely see the advantages of an all-digital dash being easily re-configurable based on context.

    • @caseyliss2458
      @caseyliss2458  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's hard to say. I like it today, but will I like it in 5+ years when it isn't likely to age well?
      My current thinking is that the flexibility is preferable over the aesthetic longevity of analog gauges. However, in a few years, I may violently change my opinion on that.

    As an avid ATP listener since the days of Neutral, I really enjoy your car videos. They seem 50% car video, and 50% “On the analyst’s couch with Casey” :) But in a good way. My wife owned a Golf years back, and we liked it quite a bit. Since then we’ve had Audi A4s, BMW 335 and 328, and (you’ll probably downvote my comment now) recently, we BOTH got Honda Civic’s. Personally, I like the Golf R wheels, because I find them distinctive. Again, I really enjoy your videos, and enjoy following along as your shooting and editing improves. Thanks!

    Lol at the power/volume switch! You’re also unable to center it because of the notches. OCD nightmare 😄. Also the center armrest is locked from factory, but can be unlocked with aftermarket support.

    What did you think of the clutch take-up? I've driven many VW manuals over the years and I find their bias towards the top of the clutch travel to be crazy-making (nothing nothing nothing EVERYTHING!). Also, did you experiment with the fake sound inside the cabin? Having read the blog entry, it's not clear if the slightly loud impression that you had was actually the quad tips or was the Soundactor (only in German).

    • @caseyliss2458
      @caseyliss2458  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The clutch is really great; I discuss this a bit at 14:28. It caught exactly where I would expect it to.
      I did not experiment with the fake sounds; truth be told, I didn't even notice it as fake. Despite the audio on the video, I actually didn't find it to be terribly loud.

    • @BobAxiom
      @BobAxiom 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the follow-up!
      I'm currently balancing my interest in a DSG Golf R against the fact that, in a few days, I'll have _two_ kids in college. Turns out that I don't actually _need_ another way to fling money into the expenses furnace....
      Videos are really looking quite good!

    I am with you on the sunroof. I would not consider a car without a sunroof. Also, I do not believe this thing has homelink which is another huge omission on a 40k+ car. Summer only 35 profile tires also kill this thing for me for, although that is fairly easy to remediate (not necessarily cheap though)

  • @julientaylor
    @julientaylor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Buy a european version of the car!
    - sunroof is optional
    - pretorias are optional in 18" + 19" black, grey or silver
    - rear lights are better
    - Wagon version is optional (panoramic suroof on this version is gigantic)
    - qi-charger optional
    - automated driving assist optional

    • @JakeKitchener
      @JakeKitchener 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep. It's insane that in the US we don't get sunroof option because the R is built in Germany (vs Mexico for GTI I believe) and they have to be separately crash tested. The sunroof version has to be separately tested and I guess we weren't good enough to get that test. It's also why the center armrest console doesn't open (but can be "fixed" easily).

    • @caseyliss2458
      @caseyliss2458  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The center/armrest console does open on this model, though I don't think I captured any film/photographs of it.

    • @julientaylor

      - the armrest on the us model: opens and closes
      - the armrest on the german model: opens, closes, has 3 different hight settings & USB port inside ;-)

    Are you going to do a follow-up featuring your new R? I'm seriously considering the R as a replacement for my 2004 WRX wagon which, after many years of noble service, will likely become SecondSon's primary vehicle. I love the clutch and transmission in the WRX and generally hate VW clutches, so I'm considering the DSG. I'm prepared to be persuaded if you decide to do a follow-up, though....

    • @caseyliss2458
      @caseyliss2458  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can find a dealer that will let you test drive one, I'd recommend doing so.
      I found the clutch to be very similar to my BMW. And, in fact, I don't recall particularly loving the one in my 2005 Legacy GT.
      It could be as simple as preference - and perhaps our preferences are opposite - but I find the clutch to be pretty good in the R. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      I want three pedals; the Stinger doesn't offer it and the G70 not with the big motor/highest trim.

    • @marcmontebello
      @marcmontebello 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      right, i forgot the stinger doesn't have that option. i thought you'd be looking at the lower trim in genesis since the price would be similar to the R. mind you the specs might be different here in canada - i know they are for the stinger. there's also the veloster type N which is coming in the fall but that might be too cramped. looks like a fun car otherwise though.

    Great review Casey! I have listened to ATP for years and appreciate your perspective on a lot of things. I am the owner of a 2018 Golf R with DSG and after watching this video and the GTI video(I have also owned 2 GTIs also), I hope you drive future model with DSG but use manual mode more. My experience with my R is that it is a different car depending on what I select. Race mode and manual mode on twisty mountain roads is amazing when you can keep both hands on the wheel and still move through the gears as needed (and I grew up on 3 pedals). I hope you do future reviews and give DSG in manual mode a try. From one older man to the you( I am John's age), keep up the great work! BTW, the throwing of the stroller was classic!!

    Casey that was a great job, just about Motorweek quality. I agree with you on the volume knob wholeheartedly, I’m a person who in my HHR has to have the volume at an even number because the bars on the volume match up ;-). One thing I would suggest perhaps is when you do a shoot while in the car, driving or not be sure to get that mic a little closer or speak a little louder, your voice was a bit soft in those areas but other than that it was great. Keep up the good work!

    Really liked the video. What I think could improve your videos, add more B-roll about the details when you are talking about something. I think even a static shot 1-2 seconds could help in-between, doesn't need to always be a panning/slider shot.
    And just spitballing here (I have no idea if it will work) try attaching a (LAV) mic to the sunshade it will probably be quite close you your head like the GoPro but also in the direction you are talking in.

    Your comments about the general plantedness of the car reminded me of my old 2001 Audi TT quattro. I had the HO version, with 225HP and a 6 speed into an all wheel drive system. I threw that car into impossible corners, and it always came out the other side.
    The rest of my comments are the same as your ATP buddies. I do have a 2016 e-Golf, which is the same general car as this, but without the noisy gas engine, the digital dash and the handling. The rear hatch latch is awesome!

    • @caseyliss2458
      @caseyliss2458  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorta. Here in the states, it only keeps you from straying into other lanes; it doesn't have full-on keep-me-centered-in-the-lane assist like it does in Europe.
      When left to its own devices, the car will ping-pong between the two lane markers, rather than riding directly in the center of them.

    • @marcvalme7732

    I bought the GTI 7 months ago, compared to my previous chipped Focus ST I've found it so dull to drive I've just ordered an R instead. TBH if it wasn't for the fact my wife wanted to switch to an automatic due to arthritis in her ankles and shoulders I'd have been totally happy keeping the ST....

    I can understand some of your complaints about the interior of the Golf R, to an extent. Where I think some of your complaints fall flat is the fact that you are comparing this car to cars like the Focus RS, Civic Type R, etc. Those cars undoubtedly have far less creature comforts, more boy racer (less mature) interiors, with less luxury features.

    First of all, great “normal guy” approach to your review. Secondly, THANK YOU for saying something about the missing sunroof. I also think it’s a shame that a car that costs so much doesn’t have one. Other reviews have stated that, because it’s FWD, the GTI has a little more storage space in the rear... and for “safety reasons” the R doesn’t have a sunroof. That is why I opted to keep my (dated but still awesome) 2007 Acura TL Type-S 6-spd manual: 286 hp, a great trunk, and, having just moved to Stuttgart, fun to drive on the Autobahn. However, I’m hoping that the 2019 Mk 8 Golf R will address all of the concerns you and I have and include all of the things you and I are missing in the current version. I say wait until June 2019 to purchase your next car, if you haven’t already made the jump. Thanks again!

      Thanks for the kind words! The *unconfirmed* story I've heard - and tend to believe - is that VW simply didn't want to be bothered by getting safety approval for both with- and without-sunroof variants of the R in the states. You'll find it *is* an option on European models.
      I've actually driven a TL Type-6 6spd. The example I drove was not in the greatest shape, but it was a much more enjoyable drive than I expected. :)

    Sounds like you need a Golf Wagon if they had an R or GTI trim, so you get that extra space for the family. If they did a hybrid version of the Golf, that’d be my next ride. I love the way they look. But I just can’t go back to an all gas car again. Excellent improvement in video quality, hopefully you can figure out a better mic solution for the in car shots, but I know that’s already on you mind. 👍🏼

    CarPlay will help future proof the entertainment system, but in a couple years the screen will look really old. I have a same generation Passat and am super happy that it supports CarPlay and Android Auto out of the box, but got a Ford Fusion as a rental and was shocked at how much better the screen was (bigger, brighter, better resolution, better colors).
    The 2018 Golf has a new entertainment system that gets rid of the buttons around it which makes the screen bigger, and presumably has a much nicer screen. It might be worth waiting for that, or considering the bigger entertainment system screen option if that is available (which also allows you to watch DVDs on there, what a killer feature).

    I own the MK6 Golf R. I love it! Traded in my ‘08 GLI in for it. I bought it brand new and never regretted it. There is a huge difference between a GTI & R. I got rid of my GLI because it lacked hp and you really felt it whenever I used the a/c. That’s not an issue with the R. And the handling on an R just puts a smile on my face everyday. Plus it’s 100% made in Germany, unlike most of VW’s lineup. I’ve driven the 2018 R and honestly I wouldn’t trade my MK6 for it. Like you said the newer version has no sunroof, the wheels are hideous & those extra ponies can easily be added with APR. But the ‘18 does have better technology. But I’m a driver first so I can live without it. Overall I think you’ll enjoy driving an R daily.

    VW North America never makes any sense to me and I share some of your points. Its interesting that you, in the USA only get the Speilberg wheels yet here in Canada, we get the 19" Pretoria's as standard (Speilberg are a $250 option). I totally agree with you on the sunroof, a top of the line model and its not even an option. Even worse, the 2015 to 2017s didn't even have an opening centre arm rest. As for the radio knob, I covered mine with a little black sticker I found online and placed it over the knob. No more worrying about the line facing up LOL!

    Watched this and the GTI review, I'm having the same internal debate. At what price are the added HP and all-wheel drive no longer worth it? Right now (10/18) in the States, a GTI SE (the sweet spot trim IMO) w/ DSG is about $26k give or take. A Golf R w/ DSG is $40-$42k. As much as I want the all-wheel grip, is the added HP and all-wheel drive worth $15k?

    • @caseyliss2458
      @caseyliss2458  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually ended up buying a Golf R, and I'm extremely happy with my purchase. That said, it was not the most fiscally prudent decision I've ever made.
      For me, I didn't want to make the same mistake I did with the BMW: I always wished I had the M3 rather than a 335. Furthermore, I wanted some of the cool tech like the digital dash. But, you're exactly right: it's hard to justify.

    Not sure why people still compare the R made in Germany to the GTI made in Mexico. Just pick any spot on the car and knock on it and you'll hear the difference. The R is much more robust with a better finish overall. Plus don't forget the residual value. It's not the best obviously but it's an enthusiast car that people buy not with their reason. Gear video!

    Great review, Casey! It's amazing how much Sprout #1 has grown already: I remember the day you announced the happy news and it's "bananas" to realize how quick time goes... Anyway, the review quality is going up every time. Nothing to say on the script, it's awesome as it is. The sound quality is improving as well but I'd say it's the area where progress needs to continue. On the video side, I only noticed the wobbly mount in the first shots (outside at wide angle on the parking roof) and the sun glare lowering the contrast when inside the car and driving (compare the over-shoulder shots which are amazing to the passenger-looking-back shots which are low contrast and clipped). Very minor things to improve but you'll get there! You just to practice, and practice, and practice. Speaking of that, do you intend to review the GTI as well? I'd love that, for personal reasons :) Anyway, great seeing more reviews from you! Keep it up! And if I come up as a jerk in this comment, I'm sorry I didn't mean to! I really want you to succeed at your freelance job n°2!

    Nicely done. Couple of comments. Listen to the last couple min of the video, and compare it to audio elsewhere. The last part sounds like the Casey we know and love. The discussion about the seats, the gauges etc - you sound almost whispering - restrained. For those of us that know your voice, it doesn't sound like you. Also, dumb question but for the audio when you are driving and fighting the cabin noise, couldn't you narrate that afterwards in the "studio"? It doesn't have to be live audio, unless you are trying to demonstrate the quiet cabin or the fantastic growl of the exhaust. Overall, great video - because you communicated exactly what you were trying to - by the end, I understood your dilemma - Mission Accomplished!

    Great improvements each video. Well done Casey. Some constructive criticism if you want it:
    1. Have you tried attaching the lapel mic to the steering wheel pointed at your mouth to resolve in car audio issues. (Or maybe a simple headphone mic closer to your mouth would work, just simply use audacity to remove background static/compression issues)
    2. Having this episode be more "selfish" and personal really brought out the best in you. Personal stories are great, allows the audience to relate. (Needs more Declan! 😂)
    3. Moments like the stroller throw and the over enthusiastic thumbs up are great.
    4. Your wording around the trunk space became a bit redundant and probably could have been cut in half.
    5. I absolutely the intro noises every time
    6. Maybe try avoiding such hard cuts all the time by allowing the audio lead the video before the cut sometimes. So the audio might start 1-2 seconds earlier while you linger on the previous shot. (I noticed this was more of a problem in your earlier videos)
    7. Keep doing what your doing! It's all great. Looking forward to the next one!

    Get an S4, though even the A4 does feel like it has plenty of power. It feels in between the GTI and R to me. I got the GTI and wish I had gotten the R (or A4 but we had just bought a luxury SUV and didn’t have the money) but I suppose if I didn’t care about warranty I could “chip” it and buy some better tires. It seriously needs better tires...

    Just a little suggestion... if you do close-ups of the interior, I would polish the touchscreen once before doing the shot.
    The fingerprints on the screen don't look good, even if is the standard way it will look after 1 day use .....
    And if you do the shots that show just the interior and the design, maybe use a stand for the camera and do a slow panorama view without shaking camera?
    A single foot stand would do the job I would assume...
    On the outside... just mount your camera on the stroller ;-)
