    Own one. The manual is "fun" but the so is the dsg. Drove a manual most of my life and miss it for sure but the DSG just transforms the car imo and it's super fun still because the dsg actually works. Also, if you plan to tune (why wouldn't you?), the dsg doesn't require clutch changes and it's also significantly faster. 4.5 to 60 vs 5.2 to 60. And the type R is FWD...physics is physics. A light tune on this car and it will run circles around the Type R. Mine does 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and the quarter mile in 12.2 with the TCU tune and ECU tune, both just stage 1. It's ridiculous. Throw some decent tires on it and I'd like to see how much "faster" the Type R is. Also AWD isn't just for the winter. You get insane launches off the line, night and day corner exit speeds and pretty much traction no matter what. I can see the Type R having a better corner entry speed but not by much as its' single only advantage on the track.

    Good review from you guys as usual. A couple of small points from a '16 Golf R owner:
    1.) AWD - the Haldex sending 100% to the rear is a contentious debate right now among VW/Audi enthusiasts. Most agree that it isn't 100% and it's more 50/50 since the hardware isn't there to send it all to the back.
    2.) The engine sound you're hearing is fake and it's not "piped in from the engine". It's called the SoundAktor and it's a speaker. Just as the name implies, it's a sound faker. Most of us turn this thing off with OBD port software.
    3.) What's with all the "Oh soccer mom's drive this car" or "your girlfriend/wife doesn't know how to drive a stick so get the DSG"? Who cares if a mom drives this car? That's a bad ass mom! They do make good family cars and there are plenty of people on the VW forums who can attest to that. It doesn't make it any less of an enthusiast car because you can put a child seat in there, or because it has a dual-clutch instead of manual.
    4.) Saying it isn't as cool because the looks are more toned down is subjective. Most of us who buy this $40k (USD) car have the means to buy any of the other cars on that list, but we chose the R for a reason. A lot of us chose the R because it doesn't look like a bro-racer car and it has a very nice interior with good manners for daily driving. I want something that doesn't "look" fast, but (tuned as mine is) takes any of those cars (stock) off the line without breaking a sweat (read: sleeper status).
    Some of us don't need bone-jarring track stiffness (looking at you, RS) on the highway or for road trips, but I can get damn near it at the push of a button with the dynamic chassis control any time I want. We also chose the DSG because, with a simple/cheap Stage 1 ECU tune, it'll take your 0-60 times way closer to 4 second, and throw a couple of bolt on's, Stage 2 ECU tune, and you're pushing 4 flat. I'll take that over "oh, manual is cooler because it just is" argument any day. Get what makes you happy.

    • @stevegaspar
      @stevegaspar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lonememe great points! DSG just outperforms all around. In fact manual R vs DSG GTI are actually quite close in performance times as well...I wouldn't pay over 40k for a car knowing the DSG version blows it out the water...I agree the argument manual is just better because it is...doesn't make sense when talking performance.

      Good point, but you missed the point about how much more fun a manual transmission is. That's a big factor for me, automatic cars are waaay too boring, even if they're better performing than their manual counterpart.

      "4.) Saying it isn't as cool because the looks are more toned down is subjective. "
      Exactly, not everyone is a 14 year old kid who still worships "fast and the furious" as it seems the Yuri seems to be.
      Plus the whole "it's a stick, so it's better" argument is hilariously bad. Sticks are fun on the smaller curves, but when you're dealing with traffic the "fun" isn't there anymore. But the DSG is faster overall.

    I bought a 2019 stick golf r, had it for three months before I got t-boned and the car was totaled. Luckily insurance gave me a full refund so I decided to get another one but with the dsg transmission, and I was blown away by how much faster it was than the manual. The acceleration difference is significant and I genuinely get startled sometimes when I merge into traffic with my foot half down. 10/10 if totaled will buy again

    Another great video! I am with Yuri on the DSG vs. Stick though. Sure the DSG is much faster then the stick, but the whole reason I'm getting a fast and fun car is because I want to enjoy driving. I am not a track day driver so those extra seconds don't really matter to me, what does matter is the feeling I get when I nail the perfect downshift, the feeling that I am actually controlling the car. Don't get me wrong, I understand why some would prefer an auto, but a manual just adds so much to the driving experience that 2 clicky buttons just can't replicate.

    • @TheStraightPipes
      @TheStraightPipes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My dentist drives a white Golf R and I think she's got kids. I also see more women driving GTIs around here than men. They're really the only hot hatches (aside from the Elantra GT now) that don't have any boy-racer stuff going on.
    One downside of the DSG is it's one more thing that can break and one more thing that requires regular service. If I was getting one I would probably lease.

    • @Boomer.Roberts
      @Boomer.Roberts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love that VW lets you still add adaptive cruise to manual trans cars, and it actually works with gear shifts!! I'm pretty sure they're the only ones doing that, that I've seen anyway.

    • @acchaladka
      @acchaladka 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the 60,000 km DSG service also costs something crazy like $900, meaning that the first manual clutch replacement from you racing, evens the price up.

    • @Boomer.Roberts
      @Boomer.Roberts 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They replace the clutch at 60k km??

    • @acchaladka
      @acchaladka 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Boomer Roberts Sorry - edited my comment for clarity. VW designed the R with the DSG only in mind (Euro culture around racing performance and luxury maybe), and then added in their stock manual after customer feedback told them that no, really, many people do want manual. The DSG high service cost however (I think it’s around $1000 CAD at 60,000 km) means that for the same money you can fry your stock clutch and get a really nice racing clutch replacement, and the price between the DSG ($1500 upgrade + $1000 service) will be basically the same as replacing and upgrading the manual clutch. So, get the manual if it’s all a consideration for you.

    • @Boomer.Roberts
      @Boomer.Roberts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I see what you mean! Thanks for explaining. If I ever got a Golf R I'm not the racing type anyway, I just like driving stick, and prefer having AWD. So I'd stick with the stock clutch and it would hopefully last a good long while :)

    You two are simply amazing! What fun watching both of you battle it out so respectfully and intelligently! I have a 2011 Skoda Superb with 7-speed DSG and I absolutely adore my car! Since the paddle-shifters allow me to drive it like a manual, I don't see any reason for anyone to buy a manual transmission car. I do love to drive manual transmission cars, but I'll take a DSG any day due to its versatility.

    Love the video, very much still leaning to picking one of these up over the AMG A45 (until a few years down the track when I definitely buy the 2020 A45 when it depreciates) And in regards to the VW on the Gauges.. definitely should match, and no.. it wouldn't take much at all to integrate the correct car image and colour into the software. I'm tempted to see if I can get the local guys at VW to even hack into it and change when I get mine ;)

      Sigh, why does nobody understand how haldex works. Haldex uses a clutch to mate the front and rear instead of a diff. This clutch pack locks, that means the front and rear splines HAVE to spin at the same speed, that means a maximum of 50% to the rear IF AND ONLY IF the fronts have traction. If the fronts do not have enough traction to put the power down then the torque by default goes to the rear up to 100% if the fronts have zero traction. In other words if the front wheels are on ice and the rears are on dry pavement then the car will send 100% of the power to the rear (well 99%, some torque will be expended on applying angular momentum to the front wheels, there is still mass there to be accelerated after all). This is pure physics.

    • @floydian218
      @floydian218 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They don't meet the standards set by the laws here. Uncle Sam decided that there needs to be a minimum surface area illuminated at the beginning of the flash of a turn signal. Dynamic tail lights found elsewhere usually don't begin their cycle with a large enough flash to meet that minimum, so we end up getting less fancy lights that do.
