We are a VW family, I must tell you, I mute the volume, put on the Tunes and watch. Enjoy the great views and perfect angles of camera. Great stuff....My Golf R will be in one of the 40 colors offered a special touch for a car I will drive... Keep it up
Bit late to the party, but I bought a local dealer manager's 3 week old R a couple of weeks ago. He'd specced to the nines - special colour (slate grey), black 19"ers, leather, performance pack, panoramic sunroof (which I don't think you get in the States) upgraded sound, Akropovic exhaust, DCC (an essential for me - I commute from London to Bishops Stortford daily up the potholed M11 and Comfort mode is a godsend) - you name it. £14.9K of options in total. And UK spec is 310bhp, though I think the figures are the same. I love the car. Traded an RR Velar D300 so from chalk to cheese! The Velar played up continually, and I wanted a driver's car again. I had a Mk5 when they first came out and loved that - but this one is something else. Mine is also really distinctive - dealer reckoned the only one with this colour and spec in the country. It wasn't cheap; Only grouses - even with upgraded sound, it's lacking in top end and sounds muddy. Seats good but nowhere near as good as the Velar. Everything else is fantastic.
Very thorough review. I've seen quite a few reviews on the golf r but none as detailed as this for what would be a daily driver. Debating between the golf r (chipped) and an s3 (chipped). Both have potential but this review pushed me towards the golf. Stock s3 was not impressive.
I owned a used 1977 2 door Rabbit when I was in high school. Such a fun car to drive back then. In the winter I would drive down side streets with my friend and would do 360 spins in the middle of the road with it. It was so easy to toss around. In the summer my friends new when I was close to their house as they could hear me redlining the shifts all the time. I have not not driven a new GTI or R but would love too! I have been driving larger SUVs or trucks for such a long time now. Would be nice to get back into one of these. My only minor issue is lack of heated steering wheel for Minnesota. Yes, I have become spoiled.
Pop off the plastic cover on the door handle (where you would typically put your thumb). The key slot is hidden behind. There should be a small slot to safely pry it off.
Great review Forrest :) the first one I've seen that actually shows the Main Dash Screen in low light/darkness..... as I heard it's hard to see at night, when the Dash Cluster is on. Cheers, Don :)
Great review. I've always been a fan of the Golf since they came out in the (early?) 80's; then the GTI and then R of course. At almost 54 years old the R is a car I'm considering since our boys are grown now. I mention my age because my wife thinks I'm a tad too old for one! "Isn't that for younger folks...?" LOL!
@@gerry2893 just to give you some inspiration bud.... I just went tonight and bought a new MY19.5 Golf R in "possibly" White..... I say "possibly" because when my Salesman sold it to me.... he thought the White one in their holding yard was available, but it had already been sold..... so will either get a White in or may pick another colour...... what colour would you pick?
@@DonsShed Nice...! If possible I'd go with the Cement Gray or White metallic.. Refer to Allatin61's video on one. That one also had the Akropovic exhaust and APR 1 installed.
@@gerry2893 looks like they are going to get the White in for me (they sold out of Grey, which was my preferred colour)... might be a while until delivery, but I'm in no hurry, as I have a Mitsubishi Ralliart I'm currently driving hehe :) Good luck on your new Golf R, if you do get one :)
They tend to under rate there numbers like diesel emissions. First thing I thought of when you said what you said at the 18:58 mark. Love the car it is a hot hatch in red very nice indeed.
So I could probably fit a bike in the back,.. the privacy cover can fit where the spare tire would of been, I brought a used 2020 GTI and the owner forgot to put it back and that cover is over 250 bucks
No its for when the power key is dead and you can't use it. I think its like a cover that pops off the door handle and you will see a place to put that key in and unlock the car,
Great and thorough review, and liked the different perspectives like during the drive--inside and outside perspectives. Btw, the arm rest between the front seats slides/adjusts forward, if wanted. I've an RS but is lemon law / being bought back or replaced (my choice) so, I'm considering the Golf R. I do worry about reliability. How has it been for those of you, who have had one??
i have a 2017 golf r, stage 2++ It's pretty.... pretty good. i love it in fact. no mechanical problems so far at over 13,000 miles. got the tune at 4000 miles. it;s so damn fast ; ))
I for one Hate the VW Golf Sedans! Bring back the VW Golf Coupes with 2 Doors. I own a VW GTI 2 door Coupe and would replace if VW brings back the VW Golf Coupes to NA... They still produce them in Germany!
you should cover some of the Long term issue's ??? how these are a money pit ! timing chains , cam sensors etc etc , alway requires something ! NOT a good long term car , fun as heck ! for the very short term ownership !
GTI looks better with the red accents, panoramic sunroof, and fog lights. Only place Golf R looks better is on the rear because of the quad exhaust. Other than that, it looks like a base model Golf with 19 inch wheels
You could spend an extra 10,000 for the same specs on an Audi... or get the R for 10,000 less. If you want a luxury(ish) sports car and don't want to spend more than 40,000, this is your car. There's a Mercedes and a BMW with similar features and specs, too. However, this car is much more value to the dollar.
Oh look, another glowing review on a VW. This is coming from someone who has owned a 2000 turbo Beetle and 2007 GTI, They are great cars to drive and they look great. Then there is the issues after they 50,000 miles or about the time the warranty runs out unless you get the extended warranty. After 50,000 they turn into "Money Pit " time bombs. And if you are hoping VW of America will stand behind their product you will be up a creek without a paddle. So if you are in the Market for a VW, be sure to get the extended warranty and get rid of it before 50,000 miles
Yes and no to what you are saying. There are some people that have a gti or vw period and doesn't have them problems at all after 50000 miles plus. But then there are some that do have problems. I had a 2007 VW gti and had well over 100k miles on it and ran like a beast it was.
A handsome car with just the right balance of power and handling.
Great job portraying how fun this little car is! Keep it up Forrest!
One of the best in depth reviews of the Golf R I've seen on TH-cam.
Bravo.

Love this understated Volkswagen. Well done. Was considering the Z4, but might take a second look at this one.
Great review. 👍🏻

Loved this guys' presentation, awesome stuff!
I really appreciate the HD quality of the video and the close ups
Great review. Nice little car

Using launch control its best to minimize brake hold time bc you bleed off boost.
As soon as it hits 4.5k let go 👍
Great review! I've watched just about every review there is on this car and this one gave me great insights. Thanks.
good review! Really want to get this R and get rid of my STI
Well did you trade? or have you kept your STI?
Also, which generation STI do/did you own?

Good video, $3k in mods makes it as nice & fast of a daily than sport cars $30k more than it

I think of it..( as I own a 2019 golf r.. )as a Audi s3 with a hatchback
It is an Audi A3 hatch
I want this car!!
Nice work 👍🤙
Good job, awesome content! Why apologies about your knees? Don't
Excellent review. Nicely done video ! Hope to have one soon.
Terrific review.
The only light they missed is the trunk light. I replaced it with an LED bulb from Diode Dynamics.

If you got a Golf R, I hope you changed the oil sooner than the “manufacturer recommend” every 10 months/10k miles
I can't decide between the Golf R and the Subaru Levorg 2 litre STI.
harrygatto it’s been a year! What’d you get and how do you feel?
Yes I want to know too
I can't relate to kilowatts. Can the performance monitor read out in horsepower?

please review Lincoln Navigator.
Does the 18 model have sequential turn signals?
Yes!
Very nice car....I love vw golf
Is there any practical reason for artificial engine noise?
Part is emotional, part is practical... so you can hear the engine rev and use it to help decide when to shift.
It's fun but the i30 n has surpassed it now
The Porsche Cayman and Boxster dual clutch shifts are rather slow.
You’re right, PDK from Porsche shift slow. Time to put the Nissan CVT inside of the Cayman and Boxster
Sunroof?
THe R trim doesn't allow for one. You would have to get a GTI or lower. This is a bummer to me but you can't have everything.
@@thefingerofgod69 it does here in Australia

jamo2006 no. No German cars have it bc it makes it easier to steal. You can add aftermarket though.

Well with their admissions scandals they actually made the extended warranty standard!
I live in Europe reliability of everything is actually good apart from range rovers
Never show the speedo when doing reviews.
