Lived with an open deck for a year, closed it in with short knee walls and sliding doors. It is on the south side of our house and effectively warms our house in winter to the point that heat does not turn on after sunrise until sun sets We did use doors that are 2 panes with small blinds between the glass layers which eliminated the necessity of any curtains etc. added significant floor space, passive solar and bug free summer sitting, dining area.. money well spent.

I can see y'all enclosing the deck one day. It would look beautiful being a glassed in sunroom, the dogs would love it . They would find them a spot where the sunshines on the floor to sunbath in the warmth. Y'all would love it just as much as your furbabies would.

It's never too late to install a metal screened enclosure. Now, I have an idea. Build yourself a metal pan to go under that chimney. Set it on the floor until you get the Siding on, then get some gravel and have the boss lady make a gravel garden. The deck looks great too.

The drone footage shows how large and gorgeous it actually is. I like the idea of making it a covered patio or sun room. We used exactly the same floor system for our garage. Even the same color and we love it. And you’re right Greg, repairs are super easy as long as you have plenty of the original rock chips and some poly. Beautiful job guys!

The deck is looking awesome! For any viewers using a system like this on your deck or concrete garage floor, use a handheld lawn fertilizer spreader for the flakes. It works really well and cascades them out nice and randomly.

I don't know if you use your chicken eggs but if you want them to lay all winter just keep their feet dry and put crushed hot peppers in their food. This makes them think it's warm and they keep laying all winter. Just a little tip from an old Indiana farm boy.

Oh I agree this deck color it really is so beautiful and so great it is covered so you can work on the siding and other things, but I do understand removing it because snow can be so heavy and distructive I also think that you could put a covered porch on this area and have like a sunroom. I have an L shaped deck like you, but much smaller, and after rebuilding it twice due to the weather causing severe damage, I covered the the whole thing with a Laser-Lite roof with a slight tint and it has been a game changer. Laser-Lite is likely unsuitable for you because of your snow load, but it made the deck so much more useful.
Love the deck! I would definitely add a cover all the way around, if possible. I don’t think you can ever go wrong with a covered porch! Maybe throw in a few sky lights, if you are worried about not getting enough natural light, inside your house.

My wife and I used to do the same thing with shirts for our dogs when it got cold. Seeing that made me smile as my wife passed away in Jan 2 years ago so memories mean a lot to me.
