  • We are Carol & Ken and we are driving our NV200 camper around Ireland. In this episode we visit Cobh, Youghal, Ardmore round tower, St Declan’s Oratory and Ballyquin beach.
Please note the beach at the end is mislabelled but it was too late to change when I noticed 🧐

Only watching this now in 2023! Loved this episode. We visited Ireland in 2015 and my husband had an mini stroke near Kinsale. He ended up spending 5 days in hospital in Cork and I was lucky to find a brilliant B&B in Cobh. A lovely town. I came to know it well! I walked up and down that very steep street. We also visited the Ardmore tower so this was a trip down memory lane. Our very first trip to Ireland was in 1978 when we tried to do a complete tour of the coast in a Vango ridge tent. The rain beat us in the end! Loving your channel.

As a Cobh native I can tell you that the "Scarecrow" on the bike at 7:44 was put there by the owners of that house to help prevent people from driving into their wall at night on that sharp bend!

Having owned a '91 VW Westfalia for 15 years, I'm well-acquainted with the many benefits of a small camper. All the fun, none of the troubles! We're only days away from our own NV200 at this point (woohoo!). Given what you've shown us in your videos, I'm surprised travel trailers are as popular as they are across the pond on those narrow streets. I was particularly happy to see Cobh since my own grandmother and great-grandparents immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland in 1914. I wonder if that was their departure point? I'll have to look into it. Thank you for the video!

Hi guys, that beach you spent the night at outside Ardmore isn't Bunmahon, it is Ballyquin. Bunmahon is further up the coast, along the Copper Coast.
Also, another interesting thing about Youghal is, that the 1956 release of the movie Moby Dick was filmed there.

AWESOME! While likely not intentionally edited as such, the most captivating moment was Carol looking at the map, on a device in her hand, using the Internet, sitting in the camper NEXT to a 12th century tower which its purpose was to escape invaders. Fantastic scenery. Definitely a few spots that i'm familiar with. My parents retired to near Cappoquin, county Waterford from England and I'll be visiting them the end of this week. There are a couple of spots that you could have seen if you had turned inland a little bit, Lismore Castle, Dromana Gate at Cappoquin, Villierstown, views from the vee up in the Knockmealdown mountains. Youghal is a place I've have visited many times over the years and the major towns near my parents are Dungarvan and Clonmel

We realised we were running out of time and wouldn’t be able to see everywhere on our list so left some major sights and the whole of county Kerry and the east coast for a return trip. Thanks for your tips we have noted them down. We did drive through Dungarvan on our way to Waterford. What a lovely area for your parents to retire to 🙂

Missed out on the town walls and collegiate church in Youghal.
Just a note on the round tower. The rope ladder theory is outdated. Evidence on excavated towers have shown that ramps were used going up to the door. It is for structural reasons, not defensive. There is documented evidence of how useless they were for hiding in (fires could easily be lit at the door and it acted like a big chimney, killing everyone inside with smoke)

Just came across this video of your trip down south as we call it in Northern Ireland. Beautiful country and lovely people there, they're nearly as nice as us in the North lol. If you ever get a chance I would recommend that you go to County Mayo and a little village called Cong, silent g. It's where the John Wayne film The Quiet Man was shot, well a good part of it in the village and the surrounding area of Connemara. It's got a couple of great restaurants and Danaghers bar has the best Guinness, my husband tells me. It's not much of a fancy bar etc but it's where the locals go so l think that tells a lot about a place. We have been going there ever May for this past 20 years so this is the first year we can't go, because of the virus restrictions, in all that time. There is a small lay by beside the church big enough for a few cars and we have seen small campers parked up there for the night, no charge. It is a handy place to park as it is in the heart of the village but there is also a camp site on the outskirts, although we've never seen it. We have parked up around the Connemara Loup as there are some beautiful spots right beside the lough. Carol does so well at driving your van I've never driven ours we have only had it two years and have only managed a few outings because of my husbands job etc. Seeing Carol drive is definitely giving me the push l need to give it a go myself, so thank her for me. Take care and look Cong up on the Internet and see what you think.

I've done a lot of research over the last decade, and I believe he bought the ticket from a cousin who was too ill to travel. He should never have gone but his mother wanted to stop him seeing a girl, so she took the opportunity to pack him off to her siblings in the US, and bought the ticket which sent him to his death. She had to be locked in a room as she was suicidal for days afterwards.
