Prime Wars feels like the bridge between old school Generations and the modern toyline

    • @SirGrimLockSmithVIII
      @SirGrimLockSmithVIII 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Definitely agree with this sentiment. There were molds that were still trying to do new takes on classic characters the same way old school generations did, especially with designs that were heavily based on the IDW designs like Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus.
However, as time marched on, the designs started skewing towards more faithful iterations of the classic designs just with modern proportions and engineering.
While this has been a god send for G1 purists, I do miss when Generations was about modernizing the classic characters in new and unique ways.
As cool as Kingdom Warpath is, I vastly prefer Generations 2011 Warpath.
As cool as Studio Series Preceptor is, I miss how 2011 Generations made Perceptor a snowtrack research SUV.

Controversial opinion: this trilogy was more consistently good than the WFC trilogy. Yes, Siege is peak and Kingdom has its moments, but Prime Wars managed to pull off every combiner between Devastator and Abominus, introduced a bunch of newbies (not just the replacement limbs, but also most of the Titan Masters, the Torchbearers, Slash, and Viper), the remainder of the Mini-Bots, Pretenders, Triple Changers, and a crap ton of 1987-1988 representation that happened because IDW just so happened to be using those characters in the comics at the time and the 1986 movie turning 30. Fight me.

And most of those points you listed are Titans Return. I still think that Studio Series and Titans Return are the best lines we've ever received.

    • @EternityKingdomsHeadHoncho
      @EternityKingdomsHeadHoncho 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@jalengatton Counterpoint to "most of those points I listed being Titans Return": Power of the Primes had Cindersaur, Battletrap, Dreadwind, Darkwing, the and the Terrorcons as 87-88 rep, Combiner Wars did the 86 gestalts and Computron while incorporating elements of IDW into select figures, and the mini-bots were split across the trilogy,.
Regarding Studio Series, I'll concede that it's quite nice... provided we're talking about everything from 2020 onward. 2018 and 2019, while there are bright points, are pretty rough by Generations standards. If most of what was released in those first two years was remade, that'd be greeeeeat. (we're getting there if BBM Bumblebee 2 is anything to go by).
Not only that, but SS's focus has been all over the place. AOE and TLK have been woefully underrepresented in SS while slots that could've gone to those films' characters go to characters from video games you can no longer play or concept art that the general public doesn't know about. I understand that the recency and low quality of the latter Bay films was what kept those characters out of Studio Series early on, but it's shameful the most that Drift has in SS is just a repaint of his awful TLK toy.
Admittedly, Gamer Edition Sideswipe and Concept Art Sunstreaker are pretty neat (and I'm excited for Widowmaker next year), but when AOE Galvatron and TLK Hot Rod show how far the design team has come in regards to capturing designs really not designed with toys in mind, the lack of later Bay rep in SS kinda hurts. We're almost done with the original Bay trilogy and 86 is only two years away from being done (most I can see being done before 2026 are Starscream and Soundwave); why not take the opportunity to finish out the remainder of the Bayverse?!

I really enjoyed the scramble-city playstyle for Combiner Wars: while I do like the Devastator & Predaking we got, I'm also a bit disappointed that they weren't also deluxe/voyagers, so we could throw Constructicon & Predacon limbs on other combiners (not to mention repaints etc). I also adored the Titan Masters & Prime Masters with their wee little vehicles/pretender shells, because I love wee little Transformers. (Still bitterly disappointed the WfC Micromasters didn't apparently sell well enough to prompt more of them, I'd love to see modern versions of Greaser, Hubs, the duo teams, the Monster Truck Patrol, and especially Fixit (no, I'm *not* buying Deathsaurus just so I can have Pipo!).

The prime wars trilogy was a great entry point for me. I was in elementary school when TF Prime came out on the hub and after every TFP episode, an episode of G1 came on and my dad would sit with me and watch it because he grew up on it at the same age I was exposed to it, it made it feel even more awesome. Thrilling 30’s, bayverse, and prime were my first toy exposure, but CW truly opened the door for me. I loved the combiners of G1 and when combiner wars released, there was a fuel to start collecting every character to complete these warriors. Titans return continued my hunt with exposing me to more unfamiliar characters and as I got deeper into the fandom, the love for the franchise only grew more and more. I may be one of the younger fans here on the channel (18) but I truly love the franchise and I love seeing other people’s stories of how they got in

Arcee, Hound and Deathsaurus are the most interesting to me as they've never had an upgraded form.
For Arcee maybe reimagine her car mode as a side car for a giant motorcycle that turns into her prime form, not unlile the mega pretender Vroom.
For Hound, maybe turns into a more movie inspired look? No ideas for Deathsaurus.

My curiosity is how War of The Primes' Movie would have played out with a different Winner (would that winner be the one that would take the Matrix of Leadership from Optimus or would they have had Optimus keep the Matrix?/give it to HotRoad\Rodimus?)
I mean, i don't see Arcee becoming The Prime that rules Cybertron, would have been interesting but i think a different Female like Elita-1 would make more sense
Ps: same thing for Deathsaurus, isn't he like Super Evil?
Starsaber would have totally replaced Optimus Primal and the movie would have played basically the same (i think in the Japan's Continuity he already did replace Optimus)

I am at least grateful for each part of the trilogy:
CW: Gave us still an amazing Ultra Magnus that was a GREAT transforming Magnus. Siege and ESPECIALLY Kingdom, while good toys and filled the niche of "armored white cab robot"...were not as good Transformers.
TR: THE BEST G1-based Arcee toy. The Blurr mold works surprisingly well for a feminine-but-not-overly-so design. Still my go-to Arcee
POTP: ELITA MOTHERFUCKING ONE. Granted, she's not THAT great, I prefer being a land vehicle, and I care not for her combiner torso mode...but it's a VOYAGER ELITA ONE. Big, yes, and taller than any Optimus after that isn't 86, but the two subsequent Deluxes are puny and are even worse in scale compared to OP, and ESPECIALLY 86. Looking back, you got to include the Thrilling 30. Back in 2014, Hasbro was celebrating 30 years of the franchise and they got a taste for how many collectors were really out there. That spurred them to try Combiner Wars and carry it on into the Prime Wars trilogy. One thing I remember, Hasbro didn't reveal any of its plans, so some figures got a big FOMO wave in these early waves. Like Sky Lynx really shouldn't have been in Combiner Wars, but this was the first time seeing his figure in years. So what if he was a combiner, you had to jump on that. You never knew if the they'd be another Ultra Magnus or an Ironhide, like I said FOMO.
Combiner Wars: I preferred the origin stories. To the point I made up an origin series for the combiner teams. Personal favs: Viper, Alpha Bravo, and Offroad (I thought CW Ironhide was cute next to my daughter's Applejack.
Titans Return: Improved on a lot of the problems from CW. I like Perceptor as a headmaster. That one felt right. I think this is where Hasbro really saw the money making potential. So many retools/recolors meant they could double or triple their profit for the cost of a new coat of paint. Personal favs include: Triggerhappy, Blurr/Brainstorm/Nautica (same mold), and Hardhead.
Power of the Primes: The concept was solid, but I wish the targetmasters came in here and helped fill out the line. I liked the Terrorcons and while the Dinobots didn't impress, I'm glad they tried something different. The idea of Prime masters hiding in Pretender shells gave the line some legs. A story worth telling . Personal faves include: Elita-1, Pretender Skullgrin, and Rippersnapper.

There was no excuse for Power of the Primes Orthia to be made of a space ship and 4 of the same weirdly slim cars. Some of the girls' alt modes were already known, and Combiner Wars had already brought out those vehicles. Moonracer was a car, but was the wrong type (her G1 alt mode is more akin to the Lambos), and Novastar was a flatbed truck (which we already had, although I guess trying to make her more slim to match her G1 robot mode could have been an issue). Lancer was a hard one, because her robot mode gave no hints, although because she was a solidly built robot, she could have had a bigger vehicle - maybe even something like Rook (although that mightn't fit her role as a scientist). Greenlight is the only one where a slim Cybertronian sports car made sense. For Orthia to have had consistent proportions however, they could have had Chromia instead, using the Afterburner mould as a base - OR, because they weren't really being terribly accurate anyway, they could have made Moonracer a variant of the Dragstrip mould. They had all the options in the world, and yet they went with clones.

I wish Power Of The Primes had been more like Power Masters, with them unlocking something.
And as long as I'm wishing, I wish Combiner Wars hadn't insisted on making every limb usable as an arm or a leg. Having toys that can only be arms, and other toys that can only be legs, would have made given the individual Transformers more variety and given the combined forms more heroic proportions.

Basically, the Pretenders incorporate their symbols on their bodies like hieroglyphs or tattoos because the Primes have certain beliefs & values that they agree, stand by or in some cases, worship over.

Combiner Wars was great at first then I got bored. I regret not completing the Aerialbots or getting Rook at the time. Streetwise is a good figure, but Brawl isn't very good at all. Titans Return however was great. Titan Masters, Deluxe, Voyager, Trypticon and after 4 years I got Blaster on clearance. Though 1 figure I wasn't that thrilled about after getting him was Skullsmasher, since I could not secure his neck to his shoulders in beast mode. Trypticon remains to this day my biggest Transformers figure. I still found POTP to be decent. Got most of the Prime Masters (including the 4 with Throne of the Primes OP), Though I only got Vector Prime with Metalhawk last year. Took me nearly a year to complete the Dinobots, got Grimlock, Swoop, Slug & Slash in stores but had to get Snarl and Sludge from overseas. Then about 3 months later wave 2 finally shows up at a retailer in June or July 2019 by that stage I'm after SIEGE figures. Volcanicus might not be that good but it took me ages to complete him. The Terrorcons were easier to finish. Got Sinnertwin, Blot and Cutthroat fairly close together, got Hun-Gurrr just after Christmas and Rippersnapper was the first figure I got in 2019. Abominus was better be several degrees than Volcanicus, I was happy to have both teams complete.
Decent trilogy overall, however WFC was better, Legacy continues to be great & hopefully Age of the Primes will be too.

I'm still a fan of that Dreadwind and Darkwing set from Power of the Primes. Sure, it's yet another use of the Aerialbot molds hot off the heels of the Liokaiser ones, but at least this time they're retooled and can make the combined jet mode. They look great in those colors and the molds being overused at least doesn't stop them being good. My only fault with them is the POTP hand-guns can't form feet on their own like the Combiner Wars hand-foot-guns could, which doesn't ruin the set if you don't plan to use them on combiners anyway.

I really loved Combiner Wars and it never petered out for me. I know some people didn't like how "inaccurate" it was to the original teams, both in design and members, but I personally always loved the fresh new take. The only thing that ever disappointed me was that we never got a proper G2 Defensor, So I just ended up having to use Inferno with Hound, Smokesceen, Trailbreaker, and Wheeljack, as a makeshift stand in.
I even actually prefer Combiner Wars Menasor over the newer legacy counterpart. Sure he might be proportioned like a gorilla, but I think that actually sorta fits his brutish personality. Also, I just don't care for the way the Lagacy version is mostly only Motormaster combining with his trailer, while the rest of the team end up as superfluous armor accessories instead of being actual limbs.
Probably gonna end up passing on the new studio series Constructicons too. They look absolutely great, but $210 is a steep ask for my current wallet when the Combiner Wars version, no matter how individually flawed, still looks plenty good enough displayed fully combined.

I did largely enjoy this line, especially the combiners. Admittedly I skipped the PotP leaders because I thought they scaled too big, despite being bigger toys.
But I was disappointed that we got Optimus Primal as a leader instead of Thunderwing, who I thought would be perfect for the gimmick. Thunderwing has a smaller bot mode, individual vehicles modes for both the bot and shell, and even combines. Plus, didn't the character get the Matrix in the Marvel comics? More obscure, but I really wanted a beefier version of him than the Deluxe Generations figure. Missed opportunity.

Combiner Wars was as good a toy line as budget and the realities of the market would allow. Plus Rook and Off-road are genuinely good. They really should have made a new Combaticon instead of making Blast-Off a jet though.
Titans Return was fantastic and gave us SO MANY great characters and toys. Still one of the best Megatrons we’ve gotten in recent years.
Power of the Primes was definitely a mess. I like all the characters we got, including what I thought at the time were the best Dinobots we’d ever get. But it’s shorter run and unfocused gimmick was a mixed bag. Battletrap was definitely brilliant and Slash is adorable. I actually do like Optimal Optimus, though. Combiner wars while a lot of repaints which was dull after a bit but was nice to get combiner updates some better or worse than others but nice updates and the scramble city style done pretty well will say the hand/foot thing was kinda bad for a foot very hard to balance some combiners. The leaders were interesting Magnus was probably the best if that bunch a very fun figure
Titans return pretty fun a lot of enjoyable figures the deluxes for the most part, voyagers being all triple changers gave those characters updates nice yet the others that got the change was fun too, leaders interesting but good overload really nice leader popular as well
Power of the primes was alright kinda felt like combiner wars 2. The legends pretty good, volcanicus while that figure was wonky was cool to see a Dinobot combiner but abominus very cool, predaking was also pretty cool to see, the leaders were fun Optimus then the nemesis figure pretty good and a hot rod that became Rodimus was a fun idea
