I was raised on a farm. My grandma always said, put the young 'hens' in the hen house after the older hens have 'gone to bed' (in the dark) and when the older hens wake up in the morning, not being the brightest of creatures, the older gals simply assume the younger hens 'have been there all along' and it's no problem. Always worked. Of course, we also made sure there was plenty of food/water stations, and ample room for all their feather butts.

Becky, I have been raising 12 chickens for about 6 months now and I have gotten so much helpful information from your channel...thank you so much...I never would have guessed how much joy raising chickens could be...I am raising mine for eggs only I buy my meat chickens already butchered from a local farm that free ranges with no antibiotics or soy...I love the little dog sitting there waiting for a treat while you are treating the chickens. he or she is so cute...I have a couple of Leghorns in my small flock but your Leghorns are much bigger than mine, and that Leghorn rooster is massive, I never knew they could get so big, I don't think there is a Hawk in his right mind that would mess with that guy...The funny thing about one of the Leghorns that I named Dakota is that she is the smallest of all my chickens and she lays the biggest eggs and has gotten several double yokes from her...Thanks again for all the good info!!!

I have two orphaned jungle foul chicks (small breed like a bantam) that are a few weeks old I need to integrate into my flock as soon as they are feathered. It’s winter here in Alaska, so they probably won’t be free ranging in a few weeks when the snow gets deeper. I’m thinking I’ll slip them in at night when everyone is sleeping. I’m also contemplating slipping them in with mama hen, but she has a baby cockerel who is a confrontational thing.

We have middle-aged chickens and we put them in a smaller coop than the big ones, now we have a lot more chicks about 1-2 weeks old. When we tried to Introduced them to the middle-aged chickens about 5-6 weeks old they always Pecked them, (we have 8 5-6, 25 1-2 chicks) when we put the older middle-aged chicks in the little coop they don’t peck them. But when we put the small ones in the middle-aged coop they would jump, peck run off.
Hi, I just watched one of your videos for the first time today. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your tiny rooster...I have one to. He is hilarious! What breed is he? I cannot seem to figure it out. I've had mine since May and all I'm being told is that he is a bantom.
You make introducing chickens into a flock sound easy. But there are some things that can go wrong, as you pointed out. I had to find out some of the steps by myself. I had one of my hens brood eggs. Two chickens hatched (yeah, I know, only two). When the chickens were little they kept slipping through the net and going outside the run so I let the broody hen and the chickens free range. The chickens and the hen had a space for sleeping just for themselves. A few weeks ago, the hen stopped brooding and I noticed the chickens started to get bullied. So, I let the chickens out each morning (they cannot slip through the net anymore) and free range them. They have their own food and water. The chickens join the hens later in the afternoon when I let the hens free range as well. At dusk, the chickens with the hens go to sleep in the same coop. There are not noises coming from the coop so I think the chickens do not get bullied at bedtime. The roost can accomodate ten hens. I have six. I know one of the chickens sleeps on the roost with the hens (on the opposite end) and the other chicken sleeps on the hardwood floor on the hey. Sadly, I cannot extend the roost or add another roost. I might have to build a new coop if I decide to hatch more chickens next year. I think I will stop free ranging the chickens during the day only after they grow to the same size as the hens. Your video confirmed this for me. Thank you very much, Becky.
I have 5, 8-9 week old chicks. Most are getting close in size to the big ladies but there is one smaller Silver Hamburg that I can already tell is a target. Chased and pecked. Possibly the color difference has her targeted as well? Will have to keep her separate for a bit longer! Do you recommend gradual introductions, like an hour or so a day, or just throw them out there all at once? They have their own separate coop inside the run so they have been able to see eachother for a few weeks now. Thanks for sharing your chicken wisdom! ☺️🐣🐥🐓
I just introduced my new 6 to my older 5. I removed the older rooster the 5 because he was huge and would have bullied the new birds. So the younger rooster was able to assist the transition. They’ve lived side by side for months so they’ve seen each other but couldn’t get to each other. They appear to have kept to their separate social groups. How long do you think it will be before they intermingle?
I had a friend that introduced small hens to his to originals. They always stayed separate. The older ones eventually died. So I think it depends on the chicken but they might never intermingle. I hope this helps.
I have to wait until I find our homestead first, but chickens are #1 on my list! 😂😂😂 I may just have to build a "Playstation" of my own. Keep those great videos coming Becky. I have learned sooooooo much from your channel 😁!!
Hi! ☺ I SO enjoyed your video on how to introduce the younger chickens to the older flock. OMBJ!!!! 😄😄😄😄 You had me in stitches laughing about your little rooster when you are on your porch talking on the phone!!! I have a Cockatoo. She has a small vocabulary. She says "Are you a good girl", & says "Hello" about a thousand times a day. She is Very, Very, Very Needy, needs TONS of undivided attention. When I am on the phone, she is like a dozen children that DO NOT want their Mommy on the phone. She will SCREAM & SCREECH so loud it feels like my ear drums are going to POP!! I have to go outside or in another room, or get off of the phone ☺. I share your feelings of wanting to wring their little neck!! I love her dearly, but sometimes, OMG!! ☺☺😎😎
I have that problem with one of my hens. I tried for over a month to reintegrate her back into the group to no avail. I kept her for over a month in a small hospital coop. I finally built her her own house and run. She is able to free range daily with supervision. Her home is called Peppers Palace and is a 4X4 house with a 4x8 run. Half of the run is under the coop. Would it be possible to give her a room mate? She seems lonely during the day.
Of course you can give her a roomate, choose a calm chicken. It's nice when 2 chickens are friends, they search little bugs together, they lay together in the grass. Chickens feel more comfortable if they are in a flock :)
I know this is an old video, but I figured I would give it a shot... Have you had a problem mixing smaller breeds with larger? We have buff orpington pullets that are 10 weeks old, and we also have 3 week old Silkie bantams. When the younger chicks are old enough to go outside we want to have them living together. This time I'm a little worried because of the size difference.
Hi. Love your videos. I've learned alot as a new chicken mom over the past year. I have a question. My chicks have been socializing with older chicken for a few weeks now. I have 2 problems that I hoped you could help with. They are deathly afraid of her and freak out when she comes towards then. Sometimes she can be a little pushy and scary but my first question is, will this get better as they continue to grow? Second and most importantly , we have tried on numerous occasions to introduce the younger ones to Rosie's coop. She doesnt mind when they play on the bottom but beats the crap out of them anytime we try to put them in the upper, sleeping area. It's so bad I bought another small coop for the young ones. I currently use my porch as the holding area and want everyone moved out. The babies free range most of the day now and I leave the porch open incase they get scared. Slowly moving their food and water outside so they get used to that as well. Also, I live in a housing community. So I have no run so to speak. Just free ranging during day in the yard. Sorry. I rambled a bit. Wish Rosie being so possessive of her coop (she was my first chicken and a rescue). How can I get the young ones in the sleeping area at night or do I stick with my plan of a second coop for their safety?
Thanks for the info, my challenge is that my new babies are 3months but almost the same size as my 3yr old hens and I've had the babies in a dog run nexted to the chicken so they've been checking ea other out for a week now. I'm mainly concerned about food, chicks can't eat laying pellets and the hens shouldn't eat the chick med crumbles. Can you give me some advice? I would be very grateful😇
Becky! Halp! My chicky babies will be here next week! Ivr got everything all set up for them, but I'm starting to second guess myself. Ive raised babies of all kinds, so i understand what folks mean by "offer fresh water and crumble 24/7", but im wondered if i should get a second set of feeders and waterers so the chickybabies don't have to go without for the 10-20 minutes it may take to scrub their dishes. Is that overboard? Would it make my life easier? I know I'm overthinking this... haaaalp!
Becky... need your help. We have a small backyard space and already have 4 chickens, adding in 4 more that are 2 months old. Not sure what to do? I hear you on everything, just the space we have is small... help
Hi Becky, I have only one laying buff orpington, and I would like to add 4 more young buff orpington hens. I tried but the old one always bully the new four. what should I do?
Now this channel has the content i love!❤️🤗 Love your videos Becky!❤️ I have two questions tho, Where did you got the little cute rooster? And how is your leghorn hens so white?😍 Do you give them a bath?
Do you have any tips on how to get my rooster to be more of a gentleman to my hens? He is very demanding and my hens are looking a little weathered to put it nicely.
I have two coops semi close to one another in a half acre backyard. I have 8 two month old pullets and a little rooster in a smaller coop with a little run and a second large coop with two hens but no run. Is there a reason to create a run or can I let them interact with the whole yard? And is there anything I should do in particular to get them all in one coop?
How would I go about introducing an older hen to existing flock. I currently have 5 hens and a rooster, mixed flock, 2 Rhode Island reds, 2 Americana and 2 Sapphire Jem's. They are all 1 year old. Couple days ago a stray hen wandered on to my land. I have her in a spare coop isolated so I can look for her owner. I can't tell her age but I'm guessing she is a few years old. Any advice on how to introduce her if I can't find her owner?
Becky, your videos are great, and we are going to start keeping a few hens, starting this spring. Do you recommend clipping their wing feathers, so they can't fly around?
I know I ask a lot of silly questions so my apologies. Just proves how dang noob I am at this. LOL! My silly question of the day is (particularly because your new chickens are so so similar in size to the older in the flock), can the older in the flock actually identify the new ones even though they look so similar? Thank you so much for always being so kind and teaching me when I ask silly questions. I'm getting ready to try my hand at building a coop this weekend. At least starting it. Do you think 4x8 is big enough a run area for 4 hens and a rooster if I have a raised coop house? I never thought I'd end up getting chickens once I got this move in rooster but man, you show how stinking easy it is and you benefit from getting the eggs naturally! Thanks again so much!
The old ones know the young ones are "new" and the young ones stay out of the older ones way. There is a pecking order and they all know where they belong☀️❤️☀️
Hey Becky I have a frizzle rooster bantam 🤔 he’s about six months old and he bites me sometimes he has two hens with him and every time I go slows to pick him up he always bites me soo I hope you can help me make him stop biting🙏🏻and by the way he’s very sweet when I hold him away from his hens outside in the coop .and thanks for all your helpful videos 😀❤️👍🏻
Don't pick him up, he doesn't like it. He is trying to tell you, but your not listening. He can't speak english so he is trying to tell you in chicken. Go pet your dog or cat, they like it☀️❤️☀️
Can you also talk about how you feel about a ROOSTER COLLAR? I have neighbors and although they are nice, I feel bad to have Cornflake making noise at 4am. So I use a Rooster Collar. PROBLEM FIXED! And he looks happy and does his usual Rooster stuff.
I've heard great things about them! Bu I did hear about someone who skipped checking the tightness for a day, and the next day their rooster choked and died, because he grew a bit in that amount of time!
CassandraBeck Wow, I didn’t really think about that. Although in my case I’m too overly obsessed with my chickens so I spend 80% of my time outside just watching them lol. So far, my Rooster is doing great with his collar
Becky i have a question. My coochin chicken is sitting on eggs. I didnt think anything of it kus i thought maybe she was just laying one. So i grabbed 4 of the exposed ones she wasnt sitting on. Any way i go and crack the eggs two had blood and the other two had tiny chickens😥😞 i was very sad to see this. So my question to you is. How to tell what ones are fertilized and wjat ones arnt. I dont wanna have another expierence like i did yesterday. And another question. When these chicks hatch do i leave them with the momma in the coop with the rest of the flock? PLEASE HELP🙌
I will mark the eggs that I leave under the broody hen with a sharpie, then collect the others every day. Yes leave the babies with their mother. She will take way better care of them than you will. Go to Beckyshomestead.com then click Chickens. I have made lots of videos to help you☀️❤️☀️
I have two sets of chicks, 5 are about 7 weeks and already outside and the other 3 are 5 weeks. Is it safe to add the 3 in now, or should I wait? I need them outside but cautious bc they are a little younger and don’t want them getting picked on
That mini-rooster is the cutest thing ever. lol

Great video! I look forward to going through this process with my new chickies! Also, love your tiny rooster! He's very zoomy!!
Thanks for the info. I've been slowly introducing some babies to the flock and I'm doing more today. Right on time. Take care
Good, glad to here it☀️❤️☀️
Dandy is making sure his opinion is known
We put a step ladder in the coop and the chicks slept on the steps.
That's an Awesome idea!!
Thanks Becky, your a gem
I just introduced my new 6 to my older 5. I removed the older rooster the 5 because he was huge and would have bullied the new birds. So the younger rooster was able to assist the transition. They’ve lived side by side for months so they’ve seen each other but couldn’t get to each other. They appear to have kept to their separate social groups. How long do you think it will be before they intermingle?
I had a friend that introduced small hens to his to originals. They always stayed separate. The older ones eventually died. So I think it depends on the chicken but they might never intermingle. I hope this helps.
Thank you for sharing in such a none threatening and charming way.
Great advice Becky! I love chickens. I can't wait to have them again.
Yay, get some more chickens!!!☀️❤️☀️
I have to wait until I find our homestead first, but chickens are #1 on my list! 😂😂😂 I may just have to build a "Playstation" of my own. Keep those great videos coming Becky. I have learned sooooooo much from your channel 😁!!
Becky, you are to cute! New sub here. Getting ready to introduce four 12 week old hens to 3 old girls!🐓🐓🐓✌🏻️
Hahaha I feel your pain, but we put up with them for love☀️❤️☀️
@4:04, is that a Barred rock rooster? cause it doesnt look like one. It does look like he/she are getting in some flock-feeding PUMPS real quick, lol!
My neighbor had a bantam roo and I just got a kick out of him. Like a lil cartoon character 😂
I love your white rooster. Blessing's Herby
Becky what treats are you feeding them?
The lil rooster is trying to save you money on your phone bill.. more for scratch, etc..😂
What were you feeding them in the first few mins of the video?
That was so funny with roaster he has personality
Yes we do!! 👍👍🐣🐥🐤🐔🐔🐔🐔😽😽 Have a Wonderful Day!!
"Feathered pigs" LOL Love love love it!
I love your pets
your smile is so sweet
I know this is an old video, but I figured I would give it a shot... Have you had a problem mixing smaller breeds with larger? We have buff orpington pullets that are 10 weeks old, and we also have 3 week old Silkie bantams. When the younger chicks are old enough to go outside we want to have them living together. This time I'm a little worried because of the size difference.
My Rooster is a White Orpington Rooster, he’s 1.7 years of age and he’s taller than a 5 gallon bucket. His name is Mr. DrumStick
Becky in the background there 🐔❤🐓 man you should see it.
Thank you Becky ♥️
Thank you Becky, I'm learning so much. 🤗🐓🐔🐣🐤🐥
So glad to hear that☀️❤️☀️
Thanks for the info, my challenge is that my new babies are 3months but almost the same size as my 3yr old hens and I've had the babies in a dog run nexted to the chicken so they've been checking ea other out for a week now. I'm mainly concerned about food, chicks can't eat laying pellets and the hens shouldn't eat the chick med crumbles. Can you give me some advice? I would be very grateful😇
I am curious about this too... ???
Hi mamm..
Nice video.
One of the finest stufff offered by great mamm becky on you tube every sunday.
Love to see your videos.

Thank you Habib, I'm glad you like it☀️❤️☀️
I look forward to your weekly videos!!!
Becky!
I hear you on everything, just the space we have is small... help
I love watching and learning. Question... are all of the horses and mules broke to drive?
Doodles the donkey and Thunder the Red Haflinger pony ride and drive. Fusion (Charlie baby) the black mule only rides. ☀️❤️☀️
How can I find your mixing of chicken feed? Also dust bath?
Hi Becky, I have only one laying buff orpington, and I would like to add 4 more young buff orpington hens. I tried but the old one always bully the new four. what should I do?
I know i was not the only one to see the two chickens on the right at 4:04
Now this channel has the content i love!❤️🤗 Love your videos Becky!❤️ I have two questions tho, Where did you got the little cute rooster? And how is your leghorn hens so white?😍 Do you give them a bath?
Becky.....love your channel,and videos.
Thank you☀️❤️☀️
what time do you think i should release my chicks? and will it be the same with roosters? thanks for your help!
How about putting 3-day-old chicks in with 3-week-old chicks? Will the bigger ones pick on the babies?
Do you have any tips on how to get my rooster to be more of a gentleman to my hens? He is very demanding and my hens are looking a little weathered to put it nicely.
I have two coops semi close to one another in a half acre backyard. I have 8 two month old pullets and a little rooster in a smaller coop with a little run and a second large coop with two hens but no run. Is there a reason to create a run or can I let them interact with the whole yard? And is there anything I should do in particular to get them all in one coop?
Always enjoy your videos... Thank you for posting.
Your welcome☀️❤️☀️
Our buff orpingtons don't fly well enough to need clipping.
Is there a quiet chicken the HOA will allow? I want chickens.
100 percent get Black Australorps☀️❤️☀️
The homestead is looking good!
Thanks☀️❤️☀️
I love all your chicken videos!!😊💕 Thank you!
Your welcome☀️❤️☀️
Thank you Becky.
If your young hens are only 10 weeks old can you feed with the older hen's layer feed?
I love your video’s. Thank you for sharing you chicken wisdom..My goal is to build a coup and get me some 🐣🐔🐣
Way to go!! You can do it☀️❤️☀️
Great advice.
Go pet your dog or cat, they like it☀️❤️☀️
Hey aunt
Can u explain how to preserve fertilized eggs
How much time it can possibility to preserve
Love from india
I just love you and your videos ♥️🤗♥️
Becky I live in very extreme weather either way too hot winter 🥶 too cold, what heather you recommend for my chickens light bulb or chickens heater?
Hi, how frequently do you add a new chicken, every 4, 6 months? Any advantages in adding in pairs?
Becky......I’m in Saint Augustine Fl.If your ever up this way,hit me up.I work at the Alligator Farm ,Snack Bar.Come by and say hi.Ask for Michael.
@@FarmLifewithKids Same here! I check them several times a day! Haha Just something to keep in mind with them!
I have made lots of videos to help you☀️❤️☀️
@@BeckysHomestead thank you Becky so much. That is trulya help
What about food? My babies are eating crumble right now and the older hens are eating layer food. What do I put out , layer or crumble?
I love this lady
I have two sets of chicks, 5 are about 7 weeks and already outside and the other 3 are 5 weeks. Is it safe to add the 3 in now, or should I wait? I need them outside but cautious bc they are a little younger and don’t want them getting picked on
I wish I had a plot of land to let my chickens free range like this
Becky do roosters lay eggs or only hen?
Roosters (boys) don't lay eggs☀️❤️☀️
I have a chicken-laying egg standing on the roosting bar and the egg is cracked every day.
Any suggestions? Thank you
