NEVER TOO SMALL Hong Kong Walk-Up Tiny Apartment - 25sqm/269sqft

- Architects and interior designers PMDL Architecture + Design have recently completed a renovation of a 1960s five storey walk-up building on one of Hong Kong Island’s busiest thoroughfares. The building consists of five apartments above retail at ground level. Each apartment, with an area of 25m2, is designed around a service wall which implies a subdivision of the apartment while not minimising sense of space. www.pmdl.com.au/

This has to be one of the best functional layouts at 25sqm. No pulling down beds or shifting rooms or climbing to bed.
@ watching tv while cooking
I agree, it has space to walk directly back and forth, no going around a half wall, or bed, this is wonderful!! and extremely functional and roomy for the design!!
Jasper you can watch the tv from the bed without moving the tv cupboard though
Exactly, this is amazing
just stayed in one even smaller in Hong Kong, had washer, shower, toilet, sink, microwave, window, everything you need lol
This plan avoids many of the problems seen in other "tiny" apartments. It has a normal double bed in a private compartment (not a loft bed, a Murphy bed or convertible couch), a kitchen with decent-sized fridge and counter space, and a shower stall (not a wet room). I could live in this one!
Hi Bob Rogers - Me too, except that it's a walk-up. 🙁
it's a normal sized fridge
Yeah, that lack of an elevator is an issue. I wonder how long it will take to rent out that top floor.
@Beumadine Sweevy True. You'd have to look forward to going to the grocery store every 2 days, because there's no room to put anything. I saw one of these tiny apartment videos once, where the apartment literally had no kitchen. The guy dined out 3 meals a day, 7 days a week.
Me too
Okay this is one of the best designs I’ve seen on this show! It’s so beautiful and it doesn’t look cramped at all!
I'm preparing myself for the tiny apartment revolution by living in my coat closet. I sleep upside down like a vampire. I'm ready.

As someone very familiar with the obscene housing prices in HK, this unit looks expensive af.
Vivian Lam I was thinking the same I bet it’s expensive.
How much would this probably cost? If u dun mind me asking
What's the rough cost for something like this?
imagery12 Damn...If that’s the case, the protesting makes even more sense...It must be depressing as a young person with salaries vs the cost of living coupled with an authoritarian system installing puppets and just waiting to fully take over...how does this work?
You1uji HK people don’t have taxes, this was the main failure by the British government... they’ve focused solely on economics yet not considering the welfare of the people especially when it comes to housing. This is actually better than before, back then people lived in walled cities
Love how they still managed to include washer and dryer unit-essential in today’s age
I know. This apartment is super usable. When I see one without a washer/dryer I completely write it off lol. No way I'm going to a coin laundry...
Just the washer...not the dryer.
@@JudgeHill It's a combo unit
@@katelynj6110 oh, ok thanks
As someone who doesn't own a dryer I'd say it's doable to live without it, but not convenient. It depends on your space and the climate you live in. I have a balcony so I can dry my clothes on a rack outside when it's dry, but when I wash bedding, I need to hang them on my doors inside.
Nice work, but i am stressed looking at those concrete buildings all around

Easy, juste say Generous , full , and open 100 times
Yeah but still v little storage for one person, never mind two. Where do you put books, seasonal clothes, what if you have a past time that requires you to have kit? How is it ok to pay so much to live in such confined spaces in most cities? Sure it looks spacious, but flats like these are only for high earners on short term contracts.

I pass by this building every week. Remember how the building looked before. Amazing work, guys! My flat is in HK, it is 269sqf much further from the city center than your apartment. Trying to get ideas from these videos, make ends meet to renovate it as much as I can by myself.
The only micro apartment I could actually imagine living in. As long as I was on one of the first three floors of course.
I hear you, even whenever I am staying at a big hotel I always ask for a room nearest the ground. It would be a nightmare for me to live in and apartment way up in the sky.
Imagine whole country with majority of regional apartments built in 5 story buildings with no elevators. Welcome to Soviet Russia. ;-)
Actually not so bad for your cardio while you are not old. Unless you need to deliver furniture or other bulky stuff on the top floor...
It's not the "way up in the sky" that's an issue. That part is kinda nice. It's the "trudge, trudge, trudge" when you move in or any time you have to haul stuff up. I lived on 4th and 7th floor dorms. Climbing up to the 7th floor was easier when I did it because I was choosing but had no choice with the 4th.

@@SuccessforLifester yeah unfortunately 1 kid and 1 cat really doesn't fit with minimalism with less money🤣
@@wahana3115803 I did buy a lot of storage cabinets from IKEA and self install. Quite a nightmarish affair. Main reason is because the public housing I am in, HDB of Singapore, the wall is not straight. I ask IKEA how their installation would be like and they gave unsatisfactory answers. Saying would not make special arrangements for such curved walls. To be on the safe side I self installed. The end result maybe was 70 percent satisfactory, due to one man job and also someone chased me to return the drill. That said, the solution was not cheap. I didn't calculate how much I spent. But it might be 10,000 SGD just for the living room. Using Besta series. I used their Effectik series for the study room. That series is no longer selling. I highly suspected that the material is proned to growing mould. I encountered it on my shelf. I also installed upper cabinets in the kitchen. All one man job with no assistance. I think the best solution is to have as little possession as possible.
That’s pretty cool but imagine being quarantined in that mf
I live in 30 square meters flat. It's my 13th day inside. I was only at grocery shopping twice (once a week) and I am perfectly fine. I have more free space than I had in 40 square meters flat - different layout. And I am not minimalist - I got quite much staff. Also I find flat from video a little claustrophobic - too much furniture, big kitchen taking too much space and that small space that left is divided :/

I came here thinking I would be unimpressed but this is actually quite nice. I'm not a fan of apartments but this is a neat little apartment.
finally a small house with a proper kitchen!!!

I've been seeing this thing too many times in these kinda design-architect-ish videos, LOLOL
Pretentious as hell
That looks like a very livable space on top of a very small surface. The only con for my taste is the toilet, it certainly looks like you need to sit towards one side to not hit the shower screen with your knee
I was hoping that the channel would consider filming the brainstorming, planning, down to execution and then the output or like living a year later. Then the full series will be shown in Netflix, damn! would equate value for money. Production of this video is stellar as well! Love this!
why don't use like sliding door for the storage under the sink,,??
IMHO it would be nice and doesn't feel too small,,😅
Because there is no free sliding space to accommodate a door with that much width. The door should be at least as wide as the washing machine. Look at the amount of space left of the door.
I love the way this space is set up. It seems like one of the most functional that I have seen
me: fantastic and cosy me and the wife will move in to one right away
6 months later
wife: im pregnant
me: fu@k
I love it! And wow, that's a tiny building - the use of space can always be maximized in many ways, I'm sure that wraparound window makes the apartment feel bigger
Seems perfect for a single person, excellent use of space.
And this apartment may be cost more than 1M USD ladies
The best tiny/small apartment I've seen so far! Washer and dryer right in the apartment is awesome.
OMG!! I love your place. 😍 I was sold when I saw the windows and how big they were. I am a writer, so looooove window.
That renovation is one of the smartest ideas I've seen. I hope they are making money. I wish everyone could figure out how to separate a bedroom from the living space as they did. So simple. Very good job. They should come to the US.
The designers should come to Chicago. Their ideas on the small space would be welcome and we have a lot more to work with.
