How to: Toyota Pickup/4Runner Vent Window Conversion

  • One thing I love about these 1980’s Toyota trucks is the optional vent window.
    If your truck didn’t come with these and you don’t want to swap out your entire doors for another set with vent windows, that you’ll then have to paint to match your truck, I have good news!
    The doors are identical for both window types, it’s the hardware, glass and trim that’s different. I’m going to completely disassemble a door with vent windows and show you exactly what parts you’ll need in order to retrofit vent windows to your current doors.

    If you’re looking to upgrade to a vented window from a non-vent window, please know that hardware for the vented windows -the regulator and the vent window itself- cost three times as much (if you can find them) due to their relative rarity.

      @@6thGearGarage Thanks! My 86 4Runner HAD power windows in the vent window doors, but someone swapped them out for manual, so I need to swap them back...
      My 85 is non SR5, but I've added a few factory options to it.. I'm putting in a clinometer/altimeter so I'll be completely removing the dash and putting in a new heater core while I'm in there.
      Fortunately, the vent window doors have aftermarket speakers installed already, so I'm using a 1" chassis punch and my 1986 as a reference along with early 90's Corolla rear door wiring boots and body plugs to make it like a clean factory install.

    I have the EXACT (down to the color) '87 truck that's pictured here- one owner (me), I bought it for 11k~ has the extra cab and everything. 210k miles of Alaska driving (50 below to running 4 wheel drive roads back to awesome salmon fishing spots, hauling all kinds of stuff, etc...) and it's running like a clock still and no engine work other than basic maintenance. No rust either because interior Alaska is so dry (and no salt on roads). Love the truck, love the side mirrors!

      What engine does yours have? Mine has the 22r. I think I'm right around 200k miles. I stopped driving mine in winter a long time ago though, because they throw a ton of salt on the roads here in northern Ohio :(

    • @skiak004
      @skiak004 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have the 22r too- I think that's all they had in '87 for their trucks. This was sold as a fleet vehicle so it had no insulation in the doors. When I drove 350 miles to Anchorage from Fairbanks in 50 below the interior was so cold we had to put on all our warm gear just to keep warm. That truck is tough! I stopped driving from December to May to give the ol beast a break from the worst of the cold. Too funny- I also have a bit over 200k on mine as well. @@6thGearGarage

    I just installed a set this weekend. Actually, when I did the body swap (rust free 86 onto 85 frame), the body came with window vents, but for some reason I pulled them and installed non-vented windows. There is 1 minor difference between the doors, the vented doors have a small bracket welded just behind the vent that connect the inner and outer door panel I think this is to stiffen the panels there for either when the vent is used of for the forward window track. Now to track down some window scraper seals.

      Here's the Dorman part numbers for POWER WINDOW regulators WITH VENTS for 84-88 pickups, and 84 -89 4Runners...
      Both factory and aftermarket motors bolt to these regulators.

      Passenger side power window regulator WITH vents >>> Dorman Window regulator 740-045

    One thing I found very helpful in getting those rubber track seals back in, is to saturate them with silicone spray lube. With them lubricated, I was able to get both ends started into the metal track and then feed them down all the way into position inside the door shell. This was with the window rolled all the way down first.

    Just started swapping out my vent windows and found a slightly different variant. Mine doesn't have hidden screws under the weather stripping, at least not on the top side. There was one hidden screw on the inside corner at the top and four going through the triangle blockoff where the mirror would be. I’ve got an 87 runner with vent windows with a manual crank and an 88 with automatic windows and no vents. You think it would be possible to swap the windows? I’d love to have the vents in my 88.

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is possible, you will have to swap all the guts from one door to the other. A lot of work, but the other option is just to swap the whole door and repaint to match. Keep in mind the door panels will have to be swapped too, and may not match the rest of the interior.

    Can I do this conversion to my 1987 2wd pickup? I’m getting the vented windows from my 1980 4x4 variant, so I know that they are different gens. Is this conversion still possible between different gens and drivetrain? (I know body-panels have their differences across each variant) If not, would any modifications be possible for the 1987 doors or 1980 vented window parts to assemble together properly onto my 1987?

      Having had to look for one myself, I think the only option I've found is to find the entire vent window assembly. I just purchased one to disassemble the latch, though I think there's a pin that holds the rotating latch assembly to the post that sits in the glass. The latch assembly on my truck had somehow been pulled out onto the post, and it basically flattened the pin far enough that it basically popped out. I'm not sure if the pin is easily replaceable, so I'm thinking the most straightforward option is to replace the entire assembly.

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That little rubber triangle piece at the front of the window has the channel attached to the bottom of it and that runs down inside the door. Then you'll need the full window rubber channel run, along with the regulator, glass, and longer interior and exterior lower window sweep trim. I don't have any of the triangle pieces at this time but check yota.6thgeargarage.net/ once in a while, as I list my extra parts there.
