Keep it true Buick, I had 70 Gran Sport with a 455 ram air. It was the most fun I ever had in my life. I got married and sold it and I’ve regretted it every day since.

Hey Kent. I’ve always been a big block fan. My idea is a Buick 455 stroker build. Then paint the car Skylark blue with a darker shade blue metallic flake and white racing stripes that are trimmed in cobalt. Sorry my mind goes too the extreme sometimes then I look in my wallet😂. The LS swap is ok just find a better transmission than the 6L80/6L90 GM still hasn’t fixed all the problems with them. Maybe a manual conversation. You, Jack and AJ will have fun building it, those are the precious memories.

First, I'm glad your local/area heroes kept your community safe! God bless our firefighters! Second, I've always loved the Skylark; my sister had a 67 w/ a 340 v8.
I'm good with the Buick 350 transplant since maintaining originality is important in a family heirloom.
However, a 383 stroker would probably makes as much HP as a stock 455 and they're much cheaper and more plentiful...tho you would need a different bellhousing....
An LS would be more dependable and parts are everywhere.... Tough decision, beautiful car, fun video!!!

Thanks Dr. Lee! I like the 67 Buicks even more, I have had my eye out for a 67 GS but everything I find is on the East coast.
After reading through all of the comments I am thinking we will put the Buick 350 in it for now because that will be the fastest option to get it back on the road.

I saw your comments about the rat nests in the Buick. We had some trouble with critters chewing up the soybean oil based insulated wiring, so I put some blocks of Irish Spring Soap in the car and voila - no more critters.

Hey guys. I would just put the Buick 350 in -- that would probably be the simplest solution. But more importantly, clean the whole car first, inside and out -- it deserves it, given its heritage. And I would take it easy on the burnouts too -- you don't want to put all that work into it, and blow another engine. Good luck to you. I'm sure it will come out nice.

When my brother in-law came home from Vietnam he bought a '68 Buick Skylark off the showroom floor. A lot of similarities. His was a 350 2bbl, his was charcoal gray with a black vinyl top, automatic. I was a MOPAR guy "69 Hemi Roadrunner was my favorite car, had other mopar muscle too. I'm with Jack on the LX motor. Parts are easier to find now a days, and you're bringing into a new era with a younger family group to enjoy it. It's easy with this video and you talking about your step dad Gary, where Jack gets his mechanical tinkering from. You're lucky you were able to keep that car all these years, wish I still had my muscle cars.

And as for the engine, no question it’s got to be the Buick 350!!! Although I don’t know anything about it, I’m sure there are things that can be done to improve it. Better rods, balanced, bigger volume oil pan. Regardless leave the LS alone!!! One day Jack will thank you! Nothing against LS, in fact I drive one. Just not for this car. I like the Comet. Unfortunately I found one in Florida with no a/c and the owner wanted an insane amount of money for a car that needed a lot of work. I can't find anything I can afford.

Put the 350 in it, restore it to what you knew/enjoyed, leave the LS for Jack when he is an adult and let him decide then what engine to use once it’s his.

Hey dude, my tiny channel is also based in Oklahoma. If you need some motivation for building it check out the 68-69’s on my channel. The red 69 I’ve had parked for close to 20 years, just pulled it out and got it running last fall. The 68 i bought in 2000 when i was 16, crashed it the same year and patched it back up over the next 2 years, like you i still have it…..and definitely ditch the wing 😉

Every single car that was manufactured by the big 3 including the cadillacs. All had the vinyl top rust spots. Not only in the a pillars, but in the back near the rear window as well! It was inevitable because when they welded on the roofs that led into around the rear window, which caused immense Ross! No matter what you do or what you did, it's gonna happen again period even if you store it. Inside of a building or keep it under a tarp, it's just gonna happen again.
There's really nothing that you could have done. To prevent that period those vinyl tops. When they were originally produced held so much water. It was unbelievable. The only best bet you would have had would have been to have removed. The Chrome trim that held the vinyl top edges down that would have prevented some of it, but not all of it.
I really liked it in the stock. Brown that it came in. ! Not necessarily the poverty But a good set of rims would make it look spot on period and yes, obviously another vinyl top!

If you are going to paint it, don't go with clear coat. My 78 F-150 paint still almost looks like new with no clear coat. It doesn't hold up and starts to peel off for a long time not like enamel. Keep it 350 original and much as possible.

I think you fix up the old Buick engine for the time being. Do your research and rebuild the 5.3 LS as you have time and can afford. If the Buick engine blows a second time you put the LS in, best of both worlds. Maybe Jack will find another car he would rather put the LS in when he is ready
