Cleans up at every 4 1/3 stops. Phillip bloom did a full test on it last week.
HLG: Best for low light for high ISO performance and shadow recovery. Processed colours
SLOG: Best for daytime to preserve the highlights. Best for colour grading
Slog 3 is actually better at low light if you understand how to use it properly.
@@gabytro that’s because you don’t understand it but you do you.
Slog3 is designed to keep up to 15 stops of DR. But its Sgamut3 color space is extremely problematic and none of the available video editors shrink slog2 or slog3 to rec709 gracefully. That's why there's this yellow-brown tint on slog footage during the day, and it turns all green at night. However, HLG is designed to have a very defined color space, and it works very well. Get the "Clean Slate" Lut from a guy who made luts for hlg (find him on youtube, can't remember his name now, it's a lut pack). It works very well. HLG3 holds only 11 stops of DR, but it doesn't throw up on you. I've personally moved to HLG3 with a rec709 color mode, and Detail to -7 (otherwise its oversharpned). I wish there was a way to turn off automatic NR on Sonys too, but there's isn't.

Lol the same thing happened to me with the original Sony A7S. I thought it would shoot everything perfectly in low light with S-Log. Shot some footage, brought it home, and it came out super noisy. Later I found out that S-Log needs to be slightly over exposed yet not so much that the whites clip, otherwise it looks noisy. Furthermore, once I finally did get the right exposure, I realized that couldn't take it anywhere near 10,000 ISO without having to use noise reduction. And for some reason, the S curve and saturation boost made the skin tones look terrible. That's when I decided to stop shooting in S-Log and try Cine. That was much easier to expose and color grade, and it didn't seem to give me as much noise.
Flash forward to the AS7 III. I took it out for some night shots in DTLA as well. I kept saying which ISO I was using at the beginning of every shot in order to learn where the noise comes in. Surprisingly, sometimes I could get all the way up to 51K ISO with very little noise on S-Log 3 and sometimes 51K ISO looked too noisy to use without noise reduction. Same exact settings but very different levels of noise. However, the lighting was very different. I think that's a big part of it. I think that in S-Log 3, you really need to expose the shot in a very specific way to get low light footage with low noise at high ISOs. It's all a bit too risky for me so I'll continue shooting at low ISOs unless I absolutely have to bump it up. Oh, and I tried Cine mode as well. It looked the same as S-Log and sometimes worse. And they definitely improved the color science so you don't get weird skin tones in S-Log like before but I did see it happen when shooting with someone in a garden. Could have just been the green light from the plants bouncing onto the skin though.

Thanks for your comment man, it actually helped me understand it better too! I wish there was a feature in the camera that could measure the amount of noise entering the image. There's only so much I can see on the camera's screen!

@@theinfinate Supposedly just as good. Go watch Gerald Undone's video, he has a true scientific dynamic range test for both slog 3 and hlg.
@@theinfinate it's definitely better than the standard profile but you lose a bit of info in the highlights. Shadows retain more detail with an infinitely less noise though. I would use slog3 if there are some important highlights that you really do not want to be clipped as slog3 will save you a bit there (with the cost of noise). My general approach is to use slog3 in super bright scenes with a ton of harsh contrast between shadow and highlights (like exteriors) and where you cannot control the intensity of the light (sunlight), and to use HLG3 in low light situations where you need more detail in the low and midtones with minimal noise. If you do get some highlight clipping with a low light scene it is still easier to underexpose slightly with HLG3 and bring the shadows back in post compared to saving that highlight with a slog and a normal exposure, because strange enough even bringing up slightly darker HLG3 footage in post produces less noise than that SLOG3 clip. Just my 2 cents with having used this camera for a few weeks now and after a ton of tests.
I use HLG3, Detail: -6, Saturation: -12 for low light scenes on my a7sIII, it's easy to match to my s-log footage, but way less noisy :) and don't have overexpose it, so you will end up with lower isos :)

This what irks me about Sony still...why can’t one profile work best for multiple situations? I’m not a Canon fan per se but Clog is it. Use it for everything, where as Sony cameras have these different profiles that work best for certain conditions and I’ve literally had to write them in a little notebook to remember them.

The second circuit kicks in sooner in hlg3, that is why you might be getting "better" noise performance. Phillip bloom did a video on this.

Use Slog2 for low light. Slog3 is trying to collect as much DR as it can but with a dark scene there is nothing to really hold onto. Log and especially Raw is very noisy and the scene should be lit.

Perhaps the noise came from the step in your grading workflow of increasing the gain in the midtones? I know that will always make the 8 bit Sony footage fall apart. Better to over expose.
XAVC HS 4:2:0 is hecking amazin! dem small files that playback realtime and contain so much information... Already did a wedding with it loved, everything fit in a single 128gb card.

SLog3 seems to have noise issue which Slog2 is clean. I don't have the camera but watching multiple videos on this subject, it seems to be the case

Looks like you have the best of both worlds. S-LOG3 for more latitude. HLG for clean starting point but not the best for pushing files.
When shooting Slog3, do you recommend shooting up until you get to 3200 iso and then jump up to 12800 iso to get best performance ?
As a fellow a7siii shooter yes I recommend that. But hlg3 might be worrh trying out. Especially with the correction lut by paul leeming at leemingluts

@@mirrorlessny frankly if you use a simple lut they’re both easy. Im shooting a music video in puerto rico right now. I ended up shooting hlg in the day time and slog 3 at night time. Make sure u sub to see it when i post it ;)

so how did you expose? If you talk about noise in slog you need to give us more info on how you were exposing. Were you setting any middle grey or just eyeballing it? Also try 4:2:0.
Question should the minimum iso be at 12,800 or should the maximum iso be set at 12,800?
how did you do the color change on the can?
Gotta set up tab 1 "MyMenu," I just put every setting I use the most in order and it makes things super easy. I think I did Format card, movie settings, white balance, AF settings, steadyshot, and hdmi out setting. But even without that this menu feels really easy to navigate compared to prior sony cameras. Even after having the A73 2 years i still get lost.
Also you can shoot 4k120 on a V60 SD card

@@a.z2972 You can make proxies on your own once you have downloaded your footage to your computer, or you can set your A7Siii up to make proxies while you record. Go to "Proxy Settings," which is the 4th item down on the first menu page.

If you’re at ISO 1600 and want to go up without noise, why not just skip from ISO 3200 to ISO 12,800 and slap on a weak ND instead of throwing SLOG3 out the window?
I never threw s-log out the window. The camera should be consistent with noise.

Le Monarque I don’t want to use filters when the ones I have can change the color. My original A7s did not have this, so this needs some getting used to.
I find somewhat the same results so far. Did you expose evenly or 2 stops over?
I exposed evenly. 2 stops would have been too much unfortunately for low-light.
Momentum Productions Makes sense. After struggling with S-log 2 on the a7sii and then using Cine 4 on the a7iii for a few years, S-Log 3 is a whole new adventure for me, but when it’s right, it’s AMAZING!!

S-log is basically raw format, everything is raw even noise is also raw.

You should try to over expose by 2 stops for slog 3. From my tests this means that the slog is far cleaner.
That would mean I’d have to go to 30,000 ISO. So high!
Momentum Productions well I appreciate that maybe sometimes it’s just too dark. I rarely shoot over 2500 :)

You need to over expose the slog3 to get more clean noise. watch gerald undone video on this.
These shots were over exposed by two stops. The noise in S-log3 is an issue.
Had to stop watching, the awkwardness got me hahaha nah just jokes! How good is the a7siii!! I’m loving it, I’m upgrading from the A9 too so picture profiles is a learning curve or should a say a logarithmic curve, a real thick logarithmic curve....sorry

I think Sony refuses to ship them to my store. I was the fifth person to preorder it and it still hasn't arrived yet. I'm more than disappointed! I even ordered it from a special store only available to businesses because they get everyting a couple week earlier but they've been waiting for their Sony shipment for 6 weeks now.

@@MomentumProductions1992 every week Sony told them that they're gonna get it next week. I already had to cancel 4 shoots because of that (needed 2 cameras and at least one of them needed to have good skintones). Now it's supposed to arrive at their store next week but I don't think that's gonna happen which is why I contacted Sony support to investigate it.
