So much value in one video! I've had some issues with the V90 Lexxar cards not being able to keep up when shooting in 4k50fps ALL I. Mainly because the files are so damn heavy I think... Had to buy myself a CFE A to be able to shoot all the modes but it's pricey as hell. Keep the content coming man!
I feel like this camera didn’t really need the CFexpress cards. It’s great tech, wonderful job implementation but isn’t only needed for 4k120 All-I conformed in camera? So no audio and harder to speed ramp in post? Anyway, great video. Love both your channels 🤘🏻
Oh man. 1:40 "I'll switch back and forth between the K3M which is sitting on my OTHER Sony a7SIII". Dude, I'm still waiting for my first - already fully paid - A7SIII since August and no one can tell me when it will arrive at my Sony dealer here in Germany. Meanwhile I watch every video you make about the A7SIII looking forward to mine, but this part hit hard. Still, awesome videos, keep up the good work, you're one of a kind. Thank you.
I test the XAVC HS 4k 120 at 280mbs / s in 4:2:2 10bit with an ANGELBIRD 128go 5SD SDXC™ | UHS-II | U3 and Class 10 | V90) rated at 300mo/s read and 280mo/s write and that work fine. My A7siii show an overheat indicator at 25:06 minutes of rec (4k 10bit still) and shut down at 28min with this message, (in french btw) "Surchauffe de l'appareil. Laissez-le refroidir". I shut down my A7 and power on 4 minutes later, the indicator was still present. I shut down again for one minute more and the indicator deseapper. I hope this comment was useful Have a good day
HA - Show this comment to Storyblocks - ANYTIME I'm watching a video and the creator starts their Storyblocks spiel, I skip forward. I've actually never watched a Storyblocks advert until now, due to having the audio test during the segment. Well done Gerald. Well done :)
Good news for Final Cut Pro users. Today May 21 2021, I tested the Sony XLR-K3M with the Sony A7SIII with settings raised to 24 bit 48 KHZ and in Final Cut Pro this 24 bit sound codec is now recognized by final cut so no more surprise silence or static and we can finally edit recordings with something other than 16 bit! Sure, some individual Apple apps still won’t play sound, but it’s not hard to find other video player apps that do play sound if the MP4 was recorded at 24 bit so it’s no big deal (ie when you try playing the Sony files directly). Now that we can import into final cut with audio, well things are certainly looking up! Okay… I’m Done ✅
I am an official Panasonic (S1H/GH5), Fujifilm (XT-4), and now Sony (a7SIII) user. Because of you Gerald. STOP making these great videos that showcase how awesome these cameras are and how to work around their flaws. You will notice I don't have the other brand that people love so much. No hidden cripples for me.
So many good notes like the 16 bit audio for internal recording. Would be great if there was a written compilation of some of these notes available somewhere as I wait for the arrival of my new A7siii. Great stuff Gerald. Many thanks.
Awesome video as usual. Shall favourite it to watch later again and absorb more. My mind was very confused when you said capital 7 though. I was like what? There is such a thing?
Question: is the Lexar v60 memory card able to record at 4K 120p 10bit 4:2:2 for a prolonged period of time? I heard that some of the memory cards can do burst speed recording but they will stop recording after a few minutes.
Hi guys! Is there any way how I can record video at the highest bitrate in HLG directly to my SSD on my laptop? I am planning to record the video on my laptop and then synchronize it with my server, so I will have almost "infinite" storage. But at this moment I haven't found a solution of how I can make it possible. I was thinking about OBS but as I can see - it destroys the quality of the final video.
The K3M audio quality is superb. I can tell that the Zoom has quite a bit more headroom but negligible and only while audio peeping. I am so glad that Sony came up with this camera that pretty much got right all the gripes I had with previous a7s models. Being a BMD user for the past years since I didn’t like the color science, bit depth, chroma subsampling and overall motion cadence I can definitely add this camera to my workflow. I find I can really match it to my BMD cameras which adds a lot of value to my productions. Thanks for the great content!
This is Tech Today Fun fact: there actually are upper and lower case numbers! We generally just use upper case numbers all of the time, but you’ll sometimes see lower case numbers used for dates (specifically years) in older documents.
Hi Gerald! Love your videos. Could you do an A7siii rig breakdown once you have yours configured in a way you like? I’m most curious about power options, similar to your A7iii build, especially if that DTAP to NFP cable’s USB can power the A7Siii through the USB port. It’d be awesome to just kind of have that one cable for monitor + camera! Plus I’d love to hear about how your approach to building a rig has changed since that video, any new cool additions, or anything that is specifically helpful for the A7Siii. Thanks for covering this camera so thoroughly, I’m looking forward to more content on it if you have any planned!
i dont understand whats the deal with the capital 7, please tell me :c im innocent :C

Another great video. Maybe it’s my headphones, maybe it’s TH-cam , or maybe the way you eq but I couldn’t hear any difference between the Zoom F6 and the Sony k3m 🤔 speaking of which, it’d be interesting knowing what kind of post production you do on your audio... that’s my main “problem” atm
Got my sony a7sIII yesterday and have some card issues using the sony v60 UHS-II M-series. Unfortunately, it's not working and just stating that the camera is unable to use memory card. But the non V60 version of Sony M-series works. Note that all cards are working in my sony A7III
I currently set up my new Sony A7SIII together with the Atomos Ninja V using an HDMI 2.0 Cable Now under “HDMI Output Settings” you can choose “Rec. Media during HDMI Output” If you choose “On” you don’t get to change the 4K Output Settings. From what I understand this triggers the HDMI Output to always put out 4K@59.94 FPS nomatter which Fremerate you choose for internal recording. But what if you want to change your Output Settings on the fly? I.e. for Slow-Mo. You can use Memory Recall on the Sony and have 4K@24p with 1/50th Shutter on Dial 1 and 4K@60p with 1/125th Shutter on Dial 2. However this will not influence your HDMI Output and is only for Internal Recording. Any suggestion for a run and gun Quickselect without having to change Output Settings manually each time? In other words can I set the HDMI Output to follow my internal settings?
I am using a Kingston Canva v90 256GB with my A7SIII and it works fine for all-I up to 4K60. The Kingstons cost 249€ around here, and those 128gb Sony's are 280+€. Thank you for this amazing video once again.
Hi Gerald, Do you still record in this way 9:00 or have you now switched to recording raw footage on the ninja v? I ask as I'm looking to purchase a zv-e1 but notice it can't record raw externally like the a7siii can
Why do you not recommend buying Sandisk UHS-II SD cards? I just bought 3x, so that comment worried me lol I got the v90 ones to use with my a7siii, though I also have 4x CE-A cards.
Thank you so much for this video! When using the ninja to record, does the 24 bit audio recording mode support all 4 channels passed over to the ninja?
Hi Gerald, thank you for everything! I have one question, is the A7SIII fast at recording, I mean : is there a latency between REC button pushed down and the camera actually recording? because with de Sony a7SII and a7III there is something like 1 or 2 seconds latency that is annoying me... or maybe it is just a SD card problem? Thanks again 👌🏻
Love that you were up front about using Davinci Resolve and therefore you’re completely unenthusiastic about proresRAW! I hope this camera will support blackmagic raw via blackmagic’s 12G external monitors in the future!
Hi Gerald, have you tried Sony SF-G128 card? Card works fine with my a7R3 but a7S3 camera keep saying 299MB/s writing speed Sony card is not fast enough 🤨???
If you had to choose the c70 or a7siii which would you choose? You originally liked the c300mkiii until the a7siii came out. Now that the c70 is released with the same exact sensor as the c300mkiii would you choose the c70 or a7siii
Can't wait for you to get your hands on a C70. Other than internal NDs and built in XLR, I'm wondering if it has anything that justifies the 2000 usd difference from the a7s3
Thanks Gerald. You mentioned there are options for glass that still allows all the features. I have used Canon's L series for stills and motion alike with adapter. What works/doesn't?
About that last question, I still think that symbol is not an "a" but a "α" wich is Alpha and not A. Anyways, I'm here again watching a video about a camera I don't and won't use. Thanks for making it entertaining! :)
I am absolutely new to all of this. I keep consuming a lot of TH-cam content in an attempt to learn. If the A7S3 has a lot of software issues to wait for compatibility with editing software, should I wait and save up for this camera and hope the codecs can be used with the majority of software for editing for creating content. Or, can I achieve good 4K content with another Sony model for still and action video. When I start uploading content I also don’t want to end up years behind and make the content suffer either.
I recently bought one, don't have a clue what I'm doing with it. I get very jittery video except in 8 bit, not sure what I'm doing wrong. Also trying to make a video of house framing the 2x4 studs looked like they were vibrating violently as I panned. I might have been better off with a cheap camcorder. I probably just need to watch a lot more of your videos to learn how to use it. Thanks for all your very informative content!
Still have a few questions that are on my list, maybe helps other people too: 1. This is the first camera that has a Lower extended ISO range for Slog3, meaning you can shoot below the base 640 at the cost of some dynamic range. Is it worth it? How much of a DR cost are we talking about? A lot of people have Variable NDs starting at 2 stops, but if they need only 1 stop reduction they have 2 options: Pun on the 2 stop ND and bump up the ISO to 1280 or keep the ND off and bump down the ISO to 320 (which is an extended value). 2. People were talking about the Phone App being useful (I wouldn't say great, just useful) and that it doesn't lock features or functionality for the camera operator. You can use it for a DIY/Low Budget monitor for somebody off set, or to have on your desk during a livestream. I'm really curious about it, how much can you control, are there limitations, how well does it work etc.? 3. I think you also briefly talked about the 3 different AWB modes, but I think they do need some testing in different environments so that people can really understand the difference and the power/limitations. (especially for run and gun going in and out of buildings, different rooms, under mixed lighting etc.) 4. I've heard that the camera is super customizable, and although I get how the button mapping works, I'm very interested in the Memory 1,2,3 modes. I know that between Photo and Video you can tell the camera what settings to keep and what to revert back to (Shutter, Iris, ISO etc.), but does this also work for Memory? In other words can I shoot: Memory 1 = 4k 25p, Memory 2 = 4k 50p, Memory 3 = 4k 100p --- With all of them remembering to keep the Shutter Double the framerate for that 180 shutter degree rule because I set it up that way (1/50, 1/100, 1/200) ? 5. Also regarding customization, This is also the first Sony mirrorless that can switch between PAL and NTSC without requiring a Card Format. How easy is it to do that so that I can have 25p and 120p clips shot quickly in succession in the same video shooting session? Can you also program them to memory or is there a switch in the menu that you have to do first before you can jump from 25p to 120p for example? I.E. from what I've said at no. 4 above, can I have Memory 1 = 4k 25p & Memory 3 = 4k 120p and just turn the dial and the camera switches the NTSC/PAL mode for me or is there something else that needs to be done?
I tried the 128gb v90 Lexar and was having trouble with long buffer times after hitting stop on recording. I switch to my 128gb v90 Delkin and buffer finished in a fraction of a sec. while the Lexar did work, I would have to wait 2-3 sec before being able to start recording again.
I have the same problem with ProRes raw, there is a work around i did to get my files to resolve, is a bit of a hassle but i really liked the result. I had to download Final cut pro, i did it because they gave me a 3 month trial, import the ProRes raw files to FCP, in the metadata window choose sony Slog3 then export the files as ProRes 444HQ, then you can ingest those files in Resolve without any data loss
Awesome, appreciate your videos. I'm excited, as I will have A7s iii with these components, but it would be great to see rig options for similar configurations, could you do video on that?: - XLR-K3M - battery grip - 2x Sennheiser EW100 G3 mics - Atomos NINJA V - Polar Pro BaseCamp Kit No need for large batteries, battery grip will work ok, most important - as slick as possible rig, for handheld use.
Just an update to the xlr-k3m issue with 24 bit. Finally a temporary solution has come in the newest update of Catalyst Browse. It can play 24bit files and then you can export them as XAVC I which makes the file readable in final cut pro x with all channels as separate mono (8 of them weirdly, but they are easily turned off and panned to ones needs). Finally I can record shotgun + stereo omnis in the same go. The k3m got much more useful.
The audio test while doing the sponsorship is a genius move! Not annoying at all and actually gets the message through. Hats off Gerald, once again
It’s the only time I don’t skip the ads. I legit listen for audio quality differences lol
No, not hats off. Hats on. Next to the pool
Literally one of the smartest and most creative TH-camrs on the platform right now!
It's a good way for not having people skip through it.
What you’re doing for (future) owners of this camera is amazing. Thanks from France !
He’s helping us who have it now also 😉
Salut Pape San !
Pareil.
Oui oui 🥖
There is nothing more I want from TH-cam right now than long Gerald videos about the a7S III
Cant agree more
Mark Vasquez got mine two and a half weeks ago, it’s unbelievably good you won’t be disappointed
Still accurate 4 years later lol.
Very helpful content, thank you so much for making these!
Fancy seeing you here. Just watched a video of yours today. :)
@@carlseiler you guys should get married
Your videos are insane. So much detail and work into them. Well done.

Thanks, Peter! And thanks for sharing your notes on those cards. 👍

my main issue with CFE A is that theres only the sony ones and they're also small.
i want 256GB
for me : Sometimes the Lexar V90 also seems to report as a V60 - switching the A7Siii off and on again seems to reset this.....
Love how thorough your reviews are. I think these last two reviews are edging me over to convert from Canon mirrorless.
I bought that camera about 3 weeks ago and I love it. Can’t believe I could live without it for so many years.
BAM! Love the shout out! BAM! Go Terry!
Another banger, Thanks, Gerald.
Cheers, Jacques!
Thanks for all the updated info. The V90 Lexar works too for the V90 record modes. That is what I currently use with the A7SIII.
I don’t know why, but you doing a storyblocks sponsor is so much better than anyone else’s.
Love your videos Gerald, keep up the good work. Also, it was a nice touch the 'inception' shot @10:23

Gerald back at it again with an entertaining and informative video!
Thanks for doing all the research and testing for us, it is much appreciated.
Man that last part & intro. No doubt about content & doubt clarifications, but I never get bored of Gerald's Videos.
I liked that transition to Storyblocks, normally I often skip sponsors, but not this time.
Watching all the Sony a7siii content you are making and as soon as it gets here in the mail ill be right back to watch again!!

There are "uppercase numbers", kind of. You did use that. Lowercase numbers would be the non-lining, aka old style numerals.
So much information packed into such a great video

I recently bought one, don't have a clue what I'm doing with it. I get very jittery video except in 8 bit, not sure what I'm doing wrong. Also trying to make a video of house framing the 2x4 studs looked like they were vibrating violently as I panned. I might have been better off with a cheap camcorder. I probably just need to watch a lot more of your videos to learn how to use it. Thanks for all your very informative content!
Still have a few questions that are on my list, maybe helps other people too:
(especially for run and gun going in and out of buildings, different rooms, under mixed lighting etc.)
On a roll with these videos~ Keep up the good work mate~!!
If you keep making these a7S III videos I'm just going to have to continue to watch them.
I like the way you audio tested Gerald Brilliant 10 out 10.
Loved this walkthrough, easy to understand and def found the card use helpful.
Awesome, appreciate your videos. I'm excited, as I will have A7s iii with these components, but it would be great to see rig options for similar configurations, could you do video on that?:
- XLR-K3M
- battery grip
- 2x Sennheiser EW100 G3 mics
- Atomos NINJA V
- Polar Pro BaseCamp Kit
No need for large batteries, battery grip will work ok, most important - as slick as possible rig, for handheld use.
The problem with recording to the Atomos Ninja V using XLR-K3M is the fan noise. Did you try it yet?
thank you so much Gerald, your brain works so fast i have to rewatch the SD Card section a couple of times 😭😭😭
*or i have probably an old Class 2 Brain 😂
Just an update to the xlr-k3m issue with 24 bit. Finally a temporary solution has come in the newest update of Catalyst Browse. It can play 24bit files and then you can export them as XAVC I which makes the file readable in final cut pro x with all channels as separate mono (8 of them weirdly, but they are easily turned off and panned to ones needs). Finally I can record shotgun + stereo omnis in the same go. The k3m got much more useful.
Thanks for helping with the audio. The 4-channel inputs are important to me.
GENIUS way to get us to actually watch the ad haha
Rock solid advice as always. Thanks Gerald . I just knew there was a payoff to keep listening. Cheers.
