    The more I see the ZV-1 I sense it's way underappreciated. So many 'tech nuggets' keep popping up that it may become a reference class product where people 'discover' many cool things they can do with it never valued or noticed early on. Really impressive and great job Brandon!

    There's always a compromise although this is great. you're paying the price with cranking up your shutter so all the realistic motion blur is gone. Then cropping and lost of all the high quality we crave. I see this useful only to save a shot or 2. I don't see now going handheld because of this and not using a gimble. Not to mention the extra step to go through your files stable them then tweak then export. Nice to know we do have an option to save us in a pinch, but no way would I use this in a regular workflow. 🤙🏼 Thank you for this Brandon.

      It has much deeper usability as a way to remove subtle shakes from traditionally stabilized shots (gimbal, steadicam, slider, auto rig). In cases with mild camera shake, you can use a 180 shutter angle and still get good results with Catalyst. As with all tools, it has strengths and drawbacks.

      You can use the 180 degree shutter rule. It's just that the greater the stabilisation needed, the worse the motion blur becomes. If your shot is pretty stable to begin with, you don't need to crank up your shutter. It's the difference between getting shot with a high shutter speed vs not getting the shot at all.

But after your words about shutter speed I was a bit disappointed because I usually don't like footage with fast shutter. So it's big minus of this method.

    That is AMAZING! I wonder if it's possible to then add interpolated motion blur in post. Usually when I try such things it shows some artifacts. But by recording in high frame rates such as 120fps, the software will have a lot more data to work with. Such thing for example is called "pixel motion blur" in Adobe After Effects. One major downside is that it's extremely slow to process. I'll have to test that out when I get my hands on the a7s iii..

      Interpolated motion blur in post is based on analyzing vectors. Assuming you shooted in 120fps and you applied a catalyst stabilization, it would make the vector analyze between the foreground (running subject) and background even more accurate. I'm assuming it would work quite well except if the background has a lot of different pattern. It's a ton of frame to render so it would add more render time though.

    Hi, minor correction, you mentioned at 1:21 the camera records the position, rotation, and acceleration. This is partially correct, with the exception of position. There is no way the camera is recording 3d positional metadata, that would record an on-board SLAM sensor with a ton of compute to process. Accelerometer is recording angular and linear acceleration but not velocity / position

    • @BrandonLiUnscripted
      @BrandonLiUnscripted  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @KONIXMUSIC
      @KONIXMUSIC 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BrandonLiUnscripted The rotation information from accelerometers is good, so you could use it to correct the rotation estimation from a visual tracker. But for accurate 3d offset tracking you can use the acceleration data from the camera in addition to image data in some slam algorithm that uses both signals. Integrating 3d position information from only acceleration is very noisy.There may be commercial visual tracking solutions that additionally accept gryo/accel data to clean up signal.

    Not quite the silver bullet, but damn it is close. High frame rate capture makes sense for what it is trying to do. I've never really tried using motion blur in post too much, wondering how effective that might be to offset the high frame rate. Handheld is key for me, which is why I've been tied to Panasonic for long. Even if I need to use Catalyst + motion blur effects in post would be worth it for me for what I'd gain in auto focus and low light performance.

    Thank you for sharing. Just wanted to check sound is spot on was wondering in 8:15 I can see did you tape your mic ( thinking RODE Wireless GO) under your shirt. Sorry for asking but I can see you moving fast and can’t hear anything disturbing the audio. I’m using the RODE Wireless GO just clipped on my shirt but any faster movement can hear in the post.

    Something to consider about gyroscope, they become unreliable when under vibrations at a certain frequencies. That's why catalyst stabilization couldn't work when he mount his gimbal at a monopod. This fenomena also occur on another gyro based stabilization like Reelsteady Go. It did not work when we mount our gopro in a drone. We have to mount them in a special vibration dampener mount in order to make it work.

    wow. This is actually freakin' awesome. The high shutter speed and no motion blur does make it less pleasing though. Active actually looks pretty good too.

  • @OutraPerspectiva

    Damn, thats mind blowing! But taking this conversation to another level, there is anybody talking about getting the gyroscopic from an external device to use in regular cameras. Picture this, a smartphone fixed on a regular camera just to colect the gyroscopic metadata to apply on the footage later, is that possible?

    This is like Steadxp I’d be surprised if either Sony bought up their software or they didn’t patent it and Sony are using it anyway. It’s exactly like Steadxp. If it is the same it was created about 5 years ago. It was really time consuming and took over 2 years after going on Kickstarter to get it produced. The Steadxp was a stand-alone box that you stuck on the hot shoe. You had to calibrate it by hand in software before you could run it. The advantage was you could use with any camera. The disadvantage was the time it took to bring market and really bad customer service. Good to see gyro stabilisation has made it’s way in a useful form eventually

    This is not new. About five years ago or more some company made a gyroscope that went on the hotshoe of your camera and then plugged into the headphone jack of the camera to record the gyroscope movements. I think you had to use their special software or plugin also? But its good to know its being built into cameras now.

      It works with your standard 1/50 ss over 24p if you are not moving too much or too fast. But if walking or running, fast shutter speed are recommended from many reviews I've seen

  • @HeathcliffBlair
    @HeathcliffBlair 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The shutter speed factor is a fairly big deal because not only do you lose motion blur, you also lose light.... and a LOT of it if you have to crank to 500 or more to get rid of the artifacts. Might be ok for outdoor bright conditions, but indoor shooting would take a f stop/iso hit.

      Theoretically, they could make this an automatic in-camera feature. Fuji already did it (poorly) with the X-200 "digitial gimbal" feature. GoPro does it with Hypersmooth (also gyro based). iPhone does it.

    • @muziqfreek
      @muziqfreek 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrandonLiUnscripted i guess its just down then to available processor cycles in the Camera.. If it has to process offline on a Mac, i'd guess that puts its needs way above what the Bionz XR could do natively

    There are ways to deal with the high shutter speed. For example at 60fps footage would look a lot more fluid, because there is less difference between shutter time and frame time. With 120 fps you could probably convert down into 24 fps and get some motion blur without huge issues. The limit to this workaround comes from the accuracy and polling rate of the gyro.

    I have 3 Insta360 One R 1" cameras on the wing of my plane and they do the same thing. The smoothness is awesome. I don't know why companies weren't doing this a long time ago. I don't think this is new technology.

    • @EinzMY
      @EinzMY 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Algorithm wise, first patent filed late 2013, took a few years to appear on action cams and phones, and another few years to appear on Sony cameras. Still relatively new technology.

      @@EinzMY The camera saves a special video file format. You open it using Insta360's software. You can set in/out points, select angle of view (4 different angles, 2 rectilinear), then export that segment saving it as an MP4 with H.264 or H.265.
