Have been to many of his concerts. Always performs America with love and pride. He said he wrote this song for his grandmother who came to this country by boat when she was 11. Love how he refers to the Statue of Liberty as Freedon’s light burning warm!🔥❤️💎
That is his concert trademark song, I guess it's like Elvis's How Great THou Art. Amazing artist, iconic and legendary beautiful memories about his music although I never saw him live, I wish I had!
I had the immense great fortune to see him play live twice before he announced his retirement. I'm very sad he's unable to perform anymore but very grateful that I was able to see him before it was too late.
I love Neil so much. He is so talented, loving, giving and caring. I especially love his song, "Brooklyn Roads." His childhood sounds wonderful. A handsome man with a beautiful heart.
This was always my favorite performance of his. The "yes" bombs throughout made it better. I remember watching this the night it aired and I even modeled my performances of this song after it. Thank you for posting it. Neil Diamond rules.
I just love this song. Neil's passion and pride of country are infectious every time he sings it. Our country is our people and this is like a national anthem as it tells where we came from, whether om this generation or many generations ago (excluding of course, indigenous native Americans). Thank you, Neil, for one heck of patriotic song.
In watching all these videos of Neil singing "America" it is only been a few where I have seen them bring out the American Flag when he starts "My country 'tis of Thee"
He really is far more professional and talented than people realize. What you hear on a vinyl or CD is really what he sounds like live. That isn't easy.

Sad that we have lost the thread when it comes to what America is about. A free place that all are welcome from around the world. This song encapsulates it in a classically cheesy American way.
I remember mocking Neil Diamond as a kid when this aired (had a buddy named for him because his mom was such a fan - we teased appropriately), and this still has a cheese to it that makes me chortle, but I miss feeling this optimistic about America. Hope we can quit with the hate and fear and see more cheesy optimism.
with the frightful hate and divisiveness we see in these times, wish we could somehow unite the way everyone in the audience did whenever Neil sang this song.
To the Letterman channel, while it was nice that you could upscale the original to 1080p, why didn't you preserve the original 60 fps? Easy to do with the right software. You could upscale from 480i30 to 1080p60 instead of 1080p30. Please consider re-processing to create a 1080p60 edition, upload it, then delete this one. There's no reason to have p30 when you can have p60. ALL television broadcasts were 480i30, and i30 can be split up to make p60.
I know. My grandparents came through Ellis Island at the beginning of the 20th century. But now I need men to mow my lawn and Americans don't want the job. @@mgratk
Listen to his old stuff from the 60s and 70s. "America" was not his best effort. Try something like "Shilo" or "Kentucky Woman." The dude had some pipes.
Over 135 million records sold now! Two-time induction into the songwriting hall of fame, Rock & Roll hall of fame, Kennedy Center honoree, Billboard Icon award winner, AMA Award of Merit, songs covered by everyone from Elvis, Sinatra, the Monkees, Smashmouth, UB40, Urge Overkill, Pearl Jam, U2, Billy Joel, Johnny Cash, etc, etc, etc. Man is an ICON!
Neil Diamond is an absolute legend. I'm sure you've heard some of his songs especially if you've ever been to any sports venue in America. Sweet Caroline is his song. But he has other great songs as well such as Cracklin' Rosie. And fun fact -- you know the song I'm A Believer? The Monkees sung it originally, perhaps you know the version by Smash Mouth from the movie Shrek. Anyway, Neil Diamond wrote that song. Also Red Red Wine which UB40 had has a hit... also written by Neil Diamond. It's true that Neil Diamond won't necessarily impress you with his range. He stays within a pretty specific scale but he's a musical legend.

@oto ss8 wrong information he was on the David letterman show a year ago and he sings America.
@oto ss8 he performed occasionally but not to often.

Happy 4th of July everyone!
What an awesome performance! Dave always had the best music on his shows!
Was at Dave's 6th Anniversary Show at Radio City. The BAND, accompanied by Cyndi Lauper & Ben E King: BLEW THE ROOF OFF THE DUMP, as Dave would say. 😊
Great sounding like it was straight off the Album. 👍👍

The song is actually about immigrants coming to America

Anyone know who the other keyboardist is? Perhaps a member of Neil's band?

Great, great song from a terrible, terrible movie.
Why did he insist on adding "yes" to the last few at the end ? To me it's just as annoying as the Fenway Park version of "Sweet Caroline".
One of the greats.
