how can betta fish be more quiet if they don't speak
I have a Betta rescue myself who's still recovering. I'm an RA at a college campus and there's a policy to take your animals home over winter break as only people with housing extensions can stay over break. Every year, people will abandon fish, turtles, dogs, and more that we'll find during room checks. One such Betta was found in completely brown water that you couldn't see through in a half gallon "tank." It had no food, everything was covered in brown algae, there was even a piece of chewed up gum in there. You could tell this person did not care. I've had Bettas before, but none as bad as this one. Very underweight, fins completely rotted and partially missing, floating sideways and belly up at the top of his water with swim bladder issues. I immediately took this fella home along with several healthy Bettas as I always end up with the animals every year. This Betta's hospital tank was bigger than his original one, and though he would still float and swim sideways and upside down, his appetite never ceased and he was a voracious feeder. A month later of water changes, salt baths, and erythromycin treatments, he started to swim normally again, right side up and throughout his tank, and his fins began to heal. Turns out he's not all white and has some blue on him! I put him in my first aquascaped tank, but after a month I realized he wasn't out of the water yet (figuratively, of course). Though his appetite never faded, he didn't poop for two weeks straight, even with fasting days and various foods to help his gut. His belly got bigger and the sideways floating began once more. I talked to the aquatics veterinarian at the clinic I worked at for advice, and he got diagnosed with parasitic intestinal worms! After his first found of Fenbendazole treatment, he's finally been given a great prognosis, eating, pooping, and swimming like normal. I kept the name that was written on his tank on day one, Shark Bait, and he is quite the fighter indeed! He's due for his second round of treatment next week but hoping for a full recovery soon! And yes, he is all mine now! :)

I used to work at Petco. If we had bettas that weren't doing well our animal manager would let experienced regulars take them home for free if they thought they could save them.
@@Jynxxy13ravedoll that’s awesome! Sometimes at Petco they let us keep bettas, like the females and some Glo bettas, in the large tanks and they become so happy and energetic. They honestly act very depressed in the cups and the water can go bad very quickly.
When I was young, I would buy sick bettas, saved all three and then my parents cut me off at three lol
i just got my betta named angry from petsmart and the guy helping me with the tank and stuff said he was swimming around so excitedly because of getting to be in a real tank . im super happy i got him . hes a little dumb but very sweet with a stinkeye
Bettas are mistreated so much, it genuinely kills me. The other day I went into my local pet shop (only place I can currently get my daily dose of animals) and there was a betta in a tiny tank with about 20 mollies, and it literally couldn't swim. It just sat there at the bottom of the tiny tank.
yeah... and poor mollies too. Bettas are tough tought creatures, and other fish get it even worse sometimes...

My local pet store actually takes really good care of all of their animals, including the fish...EXCEPT for the bettas. They are in tiny little cups where they sit until they are either bought, or die. I go there to buy stuff for my tank because it's where I can get the best deals, but it breaks my heart to see fish that are supposed to look like my boy, but are literally white instead.
Last summer I swiped a dying betta from a big-box store and nursed him back to health. He's doing great in a 5-gallon, moving him to a 10-gallon. Swiped him so I wouldn't be contributing to breeding more. May swipe another once the 5-gallon is free.

My sister got a gorgeous white half-moon, but it got fin rot and she didn't want to bother with it anymore, so I put it in a 20gal with some khuli loaches and a diluted dose of teatree oil with weekly water changes. His fins grew back a light pink and he lived a couple more years! The rot never stopped him from eating, but I still felt like a hero. XD
I'm willing to bet your sister was miraculously interested in him again after his recovery... good on you, he sounds like a beautiful and happy fighter :)
I rescued a betta like this. All white. No tail. Crooked spine. Lying on the side.
Threw him into cycled tank with lots of plants, heater and very gentle old "broken" filter, fed him with live food because he wasnt interested in anything. I was so happy when he decided to chase live food.
3 months after, he was not white i like i expected he would be. He was iridescent radiant blue-green-violet. Beautiful crown tail. He was perfect. He lived for 4 years with shrimps.
In college, I adopted a betta from a friend who had him in extremely poor conditions and, luckily, admitted that they weren’t able to provide the right care and reached out for help. I named him Simon. Was able to give him a 5 gallon with hiding and resting spots, a heater, and better food, and he lived in my dorm with me for my first year of college. He would even take dried worms from my hand. Super friendly little blue guy.
I think the bad conditions he lived in before made him a bit sensitive, and while I did my best with the research I had done, I know I made some mistakes, and after a year with me he sadly passed away. I had done my best to treat him when he got sick, but he eventually declined, and I sat up with him the night he passed away.
Bettas are such wonderful fish and companions, and it absolutely breaks my heart to see them being mistreated and undervalued. This person is doing amazing work.
West Covina, Petco, Had 4 dead fish that look like they’ve been sitting like that for at least 36 hrs. One on the way out and others that looked like they were having a bit of trouble. Asked the guy if I could have the one that’s dying. And he said no, store policy, to take it to the back and let it go through its course. Told him that sounded like a much better ideas than giving it a fighting chance at a good life.
They gotta hide the fact that they know nothing about fish keeping. Someone buying that fish and exposing them would mean a loss of money.

Unfortunately places like that don’t really care about the animals that they sell. Sometimes you will meet workers who do care but I don’t know what they can do either… If you are in West Covina then you should check out CK Aquarium on Azusa just above the 10 fwy. They had decent stock last time I was there. Fish, shrimp, plants, etc. Haven’t been there in a while though. They used to sponsor an aquatic plant group called SCAPE.
God, I saw a leopard gecko at a petco like that once. Stick tail, so I told the employees and asked for him. Told me I couldn't take him and he would just go to the back. I hate chain pet stores.

My last betta fish was clearly unhappy when I bought him, so much so that he had started to loose colour and his fins were ripped. He looked immediately happier when I got him home and put him in a 10 gallon aquarium and started to regain his colour and his fins grew really long which was amazing to see. He lived a great life from then on.
When Dodo covers an animal rescue, you know it's gonna get seen and the exposure will hopefully shine some literal light on how fish /should/ be kept vs a stupid bowl or cup of water. Nice.
Wait untill spring and you will see a work of art with 35 galons of volume. This land will be populated by two honey guramis. Ten neon tetras. A brissle nosed pleco and a dozen shrimps. This will be a great FTR. I promise.

The honey gourami may try to eat the shrimp (even if they are full grown). Unless they are a giant shrimp species
I worked in a Petco and ended up taking quite a few dying bettas home (nobody cared there. Nobody did water changes). The first one I took in looked EXACTLY like this guy. He was a Cambodian twin tail half moon, too and he had the same transformation. He lived with me for 2.5 years and he was my little shadow. RIP my little buddy Tom Petty the Fish.
One of my bettas i took from a pet shop had almost no fins left, hes now an amazingly beautiful blue and White grizzle halfmoon. I wasnt expecting him in my 15 gallons meant for boraras but now hes living his best life in it with shrimps

@@FishForThought yes its so satisfying to save a fish plus the guy at the pet shop was so Nice and since i adopted my fish he improved betta keeping a lot at the shop, they all have a nice volume and are healthy now. Plants are also way healtier and there is a bigger variety now. Im happy he was able to change the policy of the shop because i really hated this shop before, faith a little restored now
I have 3 rescue bettas. One was floating on his side, one had anchor worm, and one looked dead until I picked her up. They were all super colorless. Gemma is now the shiniest fish I've ever seen, Zaffiro is the brightest of blues, and Faccina is the brightest white with black fins that shine blue.

I absolutely love this video! I had a sick Betta not too long ago, and this gave me the hope that he will make it. He beat the sickness once, but it came back right before I could move him into his new tank. Unfortunately, he didn't make it, but I'm happy to see other bettas do

same here. my female betta has been recently struggling, and late last night i saw her swimming to the top where i feed her for the first time in a while, and she ate :) i hope she’ll be able to get better

Poor betta fish. Kept in those tiny cups ): it breaks my heart!! About 8 months ago, I got a betta from Petco. I don't remember (because I'm Dory and I have short term memory loss, tysm.) but I am quite sure he had a bad case of fin rot. He is now super happy in his 10 gallon with a rabbit snail and 4 glowlight tetras!
I literally just found you like 20 mins ago, super helpful videos on how to set up our Betta for success. We have only had her for 4 days now and i feel like i need to go back to the drawing board as far as her tank set up etc. We have a 3.5 gal tank. It was a gift for my daughter on her 7th birthday. I have 1 live plan and everything else is artifical. Think its time to upgrade her home. Thank you. Also, this video is both heart breaking and heart warming. That women is doing an amazing job!
Try a 15-30 gallon ‘Ecosystem’ tank, I find them easy and if you do that right all you ever need to do is feed the fish and top up the water ! Live plants are a must though!
@@foxesproject5031 thank you for the advice! I will continue to do my research. Have you had experience with African Dwarf frogs? My daughter really wanted one so we got one not 100%prepared and the girl at the store gave us a little input but the poor little guy didn't survive. I fill terrible
@@jessicaeileene I don’t have much experience with them, but fish / aquatic animals do pass away, but you will learn! I wouldn’t solely rely on one source or a pet store!
A good fish group to start with would be 2 male guppies , 6 females ,1 male platy ( or none ) and 2 females! A 20-30 gallon heavily planted tank is great for the group ! The guppies and platies breed and produce colourful babies and they are easy and fun ! I love mixing and matching my group !

@@foxesproject5031 I am going to counteract your suggestion with one of my own. I don't suggest anyone get mixed group of guppies or other livebearers unless they have a deliberate intent and plan for the fry. Especially if the person is new to fishkeeping. (This was the start of my Multiple Tank Syndrome 🤣) My LFS regularly has huge batches of sickly fry dropped off because guppies etc will quickly overtake the size of a tank and people get overwhelmed.
The good news is that male and female guppies do absolutely great in same sex only groups, and still give you a lot of colour and movement to watch. Hint for those who don't know ... female guppies store sperm and can give birth multiple times from one exposure to a male. So if the guppies come from a mixed tank, stick with the males! Or learn how to sex the babies from the shape of their fins, and plan to have a second tank eventually...
I bought a poor condition betta a few weeks ago, she was the skinniest thing I had ever seen in a cup I didn’t think she’d make it a week so I’d just make her comfortable. I was wrong! She’s a gorgeous pearl looking elephant ear and since I’ve fattened her up she’s made herself extremely comfortable in the 40 gallon shrimp tank and what started as a hospice pet has now become the center piece of my tank and I adore her, and her tiny little pot belly (it’s not bloat, it’s blood worm)

Hey Chris! So update on my female betta fish Athena, she killed 7 of the 10 red cherry shrimp so I relocated the remaining shrimp to another tank and now I have learnt my lesson with shrimp and betta fish. Pls Pray for there poor little Shrimpies
She gave this Betta fish all her love and that is why he became healthy and beautiful 🤩.

I’ve nursed a few bettas back to health, currently have a boy in quarantine.
I’m never going to buy live fish from petco ever again, I’ve had so many issues with diseases.
Just ordered some fish directly from a breeder and I’m excited to get them.
Had two lyretail mollies from petco, both died within a few months.
Firstly the guy who took them out of the tank at the store literally basically bludgeoned them with the net against the tank, and the first one to pass had issues after that. The other one lasted longer, but ultimately also passed after struggling the whole time.
Meanwhile, my crawfish i got from a crawfish boil is still happy as can be
1:50 if you get a sponge filter with an adjustable valve you can slowly power it up as the fish gets better.
I wouldnt have the confidence to save that little guy, big BIG props to her for giving him the care he deserved!
Just did this for my betta Apollo. She was at petsmart and I never buy fish from there, only supplies, but I’ve seen her every time for over 4 months… she was in HORRIBLE condition… my empathy got to me and I needed to get her.
I put her in a 4 gal, water changes daily with salt, but she did have a mini sponge filter I made.
Once she was better I started decorating the tank, adding substrate and live plants, then I got a small jar and superglued pebbles and bucephalandra all over it as a cave.
She’s still in that 4 gal and seems to be doing amazing now (I added a few red cherry shrimp and she likes to watch them, thankfully not eat them lol).
I’m not sure if I’m gonna upgrade the tank as I maintain it well and she’s super small, but if she grows more I’ll give her a 10 gal (her growth was stunted and she’s maybe an inch long).
She’s white with red fins, red “freckles” on her face, and has blue iridescent shimmers when the light hits just right.
No regrets ❤ I love her

For a new fish owners. Make sure you get the sponge cover for your filter. I rescued a beta that was hardly eating and floating at the top of her cup at the store. I brought her home and put her in a 1.5 gallon. She got a lot happier and started eating and swimming around again. And then someone recommended to me to buy her a 10 gallon so she had more room to swim. I did this, and she was happy in it for a few days. But on the third day I found her stuck against the filter and it was too late to save her. :( the suction was too strong killed her.. though filters have a cover so fish don’t get sucked up… they can still get sucked too it. And like he said in the video.. maybe she was to weak still.. Now, I have a sponge cover to go over the already made cover, and I’ve had no problems with my new babies.
That being said it was a devastating Lesson to learn about filters. So please make sure you guys are getting the proper filter cover if you have weaker fish to avoid a heartbreaking experience. As for fish girl! What a wonderful story that made me so happy. And also a little sad. RIP to my baby

Thanks for your excellent channel, Chris! By sharing your knowledge, you are saving fish lives. I had never cared for betta, and I now have two, each in their own 10-gallon tank. One is at the library where I work. His name is Dracula. He was originally living in a plastic bag thumb-tacked to the wall of the LFS. He's in our children's department. Now parents are asking how to take care of bettas!
Maybe you could put up a poster, or put out some flyers they can take away with them?
Yes! Also, when I buy books on fish -keeping for the library, I try to find ones that mention tank cycling. Most of the juvenile books on pet fish advise parents to add fish after running the filter for a few days. Publishers really need to do better homework! I made a flyer to put in the books.

I found a beta at the pet store and took him home hoping to save him. He was sick and his tail stayed floating on the water surface. I lost him the next day. And I swear that fish knew I was at least trying to make him comfortable I named him lucky. And I am positive he knew when I was sad. (I kept crying when I would talk about him.) I’m positive he knew why I was sad. He would get so energetic and flare up. Especially when I talked to him. I knew he wouldn’t make it. I was attached to him immediately.

My favorite Betta fish was paralyzed and only his pectoral fins worked. He was a beautiful purple..hence Purple Rain. Always swim bladder problems & needed a special, very fine diet. No fish trusted me more. I always picked him up in my hand for his Epsom salt baths which he loved. He absolutely trusted me because he knew I could help him with his swim bladder issues.
I've been doing Betta rescue as well! Its actually pretty therapeutic, and I always keep them as pets. Each water change, I put water conditioner and any antibiotics a fish may need.
My current fish, Feather wasn't a rescue but the fish that I had with him lived a full life and passed around the time I bought Feather. Feather was very healthy and he came from a much better pet store (my local country max)
Feather is still tiny, months later but I think that's just how he is. He swims fine, acts normal, he's actually not even that aggressive. But anyways, that is a perfect example of a betta rescue
I actually had a fish like that. I put them in a very tiny hospital with a half gallon. Made sure the water was not too high. He lived for about 3 months. At the time I didn't know how to fix the water in Taiwan I think he could have lived much longer if I had found out earlier.
He was a beautiful downtown and he had multiple colors when he got better.
I'm new to Bettas, I have a male in my 90 gallon community tank. And he looks just like Bongo (healthy bongo that is). He's extremely personable, and eats right off the tip of my fingers! This was such an inspiring video! Great review Chris!
My fish had a similar story. when i got her, she was pure white, and the person i got her from said she was a crowntail mostly due to the state of her fins. Now she is almost 98% azure blue and having a beautiful green shimmer. her fins have also healed showing that shes actually a halfmoon:)

at my pet store there was some glofish that were in really rough shape, swim bladder disease, ick, fin rot, pop eye, and other things, and i adopted 5. 3 corydoras and 2 tiger barbs. unfortunately, i lost one tiger barb recently while on vacation, but after a year they're all doing perfectly fine.

I have seen this video some time ago and was beautiful, because fish that look like this are usually hated or just ignored and that made me happy to think about that she saved so many bettas
I didn’t necessarily rescue my betta but he did look unhappy in that cup, now he swims around and is active exploring his tank resting swimming up to the glass to see me and even trying to scare me off by flaring at me, which I humor him and walk away when he does that lol, they really are water puppies.
I have a terrible time going past living things in little cups of water like this no matter what the species. I'm not well enough to have any kind of pet (except houseplants) so I'm really glad some folks are doing rescues like this. Fish are amazing. My sister's goldfish recognized her and would splash at the top of his (large) tank when she came home from work and would swim up for treats. If she put her fingers in the water he/she would come over and almost snuggle her. Another friend of mine keeps a number of fish (she's a scientist who specializes in salmon and sturgeon) and one of them has learned a bunch of tricks! He can swim through a hoop, put a ball through a hoop and fetch little things. He gets treats for this and loves his training time. Super nice little fish. :)

Great job on the Betta rescue! Only other thing that I would have added would be Almond Leaves for tannins they have amazing healing properties for Bettas.
So glad that betta got another chance at life, poor thing was ghost white and now he's a brilliant red. I also recently got a twin tail halfmoon for my birthday, I call him Tink or Tinker because of his teal and pink colors :)

I did it with my own betta, his tails and sails were really in bad condition, 0 appetite. I took him, prepared a tank just for him and now he's big, super energic and friendly betta. Man. I love these fishes so much, I wish I could do it with more but I don't have enough space :((
When My Motu will die I will do it again with another betta.
Every betta is so different. You can watch all the videos and still have a completely unique experience. I'm so glad that there are people like this girl in the world. Please try to buy your fish from responisble local breeders if possible. Anything else is just promoting poor fish keeping. If you can't buy local, there are lots of good breeders online that specialize in betta. If we keep buying the 5.99 special from.. the box store, they will keep ordering. And more will need rescuing.

Just had a new rescue betta of mine pass away today. I got him last night; mega clamped fins and covered in ich; his gills were literally rotting away. I tried my best for him but he was just too weak. I love the store I work with though, because I got the boy free of charge. Nobody profited from his suffering ♥️♥️♥️
I rescued my current betta from petsmart. He had been in quarantine a month with fin rot. Within 2 weeks of quality care he was eating and flourishing! He got very spoiled on frozen food lol.
I have three rescued bettas, to were extremely overfed and basically inactive due to poor water conditions and tiny bowls, and my other one who's almost completely blind his eyes no longer are clouded over but he still struggles to see but it just requires a little extra care when feeding he's also very very tiny
To be fair, most beta fish are rescues. They're kept in those tiny bowls that they can hardly turn around in. I just got a king Betta that was damn near as long as the bowl was wide. He now lives in a 40 gallon tank.
Very true, I agree with you! I recently rescued a king betta. He is doing awesome in my 13 gallon community tank. 😊
I have a zebra danio - he damaged his tail fin and couldn't swim, he was on his side or going in circles.
Really thought 'oh dude you aren't going to survive'. To my surprise he continued to eat so I thought I'd try to keep going.
His tail has started to grow back! He is swimming again and is doing really well. I've called him stumpy and I'm invested in him doing well ❤️
Some of the best places to get free betta fish that you can have the satisfaction of nurturing back to health, is from college students leaving for the summer or graduating.

I've done this twice now, both dragon scales, one I talked them into a deal, the other I switched lids to a veil tail . It's usually the expensive ones , or "boring" ones that go under, because " I'm not spending 20 Dollars on a fish that's going to die in a hear" 3 year old Betta at home
Yeah, I could see that being a problem. After all, one of the main reasons I haven't purchased any more mice to keep as pets is that most of the time the ones that show up at Petco are all albinos. And while each mouse is undoubtedly different. It's hard to deny that eight white mice aren't particularly exciting to look at.
Of course, I still need to release the deer mice I caught this winter. So I need to find some time to head out into the country or something and let them go. Though admittedly I hadn't planned on having more then one of them in the first place.
Aww this is so sweet! It makes me happy to see people willing to put the effort in to care for small lives like this and bring such a lovely fish back to health :)
Also I agree I think there is a lot of confusion among the words 'adoption' and 'rescue' and sometimes people will misuse them to make themselves sound more altruistic. A purchase is not the same as adopting, adoptions can be rescues but not all rescues are adoptions, that sort of thing. Personally I think to qualify as a true 'rescue', the animal has to be in
1. in a state of abuse or neglect
2. Without a permanent caretaker, or with an uneqquipped/abusive caretaker
3. Not a purchase, *unless if otherwise* they would be left to face death/permanent disability
4. The future of the animal's safety is *definitely* in jeopardy (ie. Being sold on craigslist/being given away for free, not just being sold in a pet store) and you have the ability to heal their condition

I think some people like to use the word rescue quite loosely (actually myself included) but as long as it's not some outrageously dumb thing like just buying all the bettas off the rack of a petsmart and calling it a rescue, but something more like this video or someone trying to take care of a betta that's not in the best shape, rescue sounds fine to me!
@@FishForThought yeah, I'm not the kind of person who's going to yell at someone for calling their adopted pet a rescue lol, I just think there should be a notable distinction between buying an animal/a bunch of animals from a chain pet store and calling it a rescue for brownie points, versus taking in a neglected animal and nursing it back to health yourself with your own resources.

This was absolutely inspiring as I ADORE Bettas and now as an adult who has done my fair share of research, I realize how often this happens especially parents buying something for a begging child on a whim and knowing not one thing about fish. Sadly, my parents did the same thing, but thankfully that cycle will not be repeated and stops with me.
I had this happen with our betta we had reserved while we finished cycling his tank and on the day of pick up he was sickly and his fins had rotted away. We found out he had ick and i luckily got some treatment from the shop and he perked up literally the next day and was swimming up to get air and was eating and searching following me around the room. We had him in his 10 gl with substrate (my first betta in years so i didn’t know i needed a tank with no substrate to help him recover) and nothing else. I’ve had him for almost a year now and he is such a goofy fish and he recognizes me and my bf and gets so excited to see us. He has hardscape and were working on getting greenery in his tank. Its solely his tank and i plan on keeping it that way until my boys final moments.
The shop owner said he had no idea how long he had been there but that it had to be about 6 months before we came and reserved him. After that everyone wanted our boy. I have bo idea what type of betta he is all i know is he’s yellow, blue, turquoise, and red and his top fin now has a curly q after it healed.
It was honestly one of the most rewarding and most proud moments of my life. ❤️

I work at petco and someone bought a betta that was just a little rough like a month ago. it had some bad fin rot (nothing like this guy) but she came in today and showed me pics of its improvement. It looks awesome! Its so amazing what warm, clean water can do. (ha well not amazing, its pretty obvious you wouldn't let your child lay around in its own filth but it doesn't transfer over to fish for some reason) no-brainers these big companies should be implementing rack systems. not worth it for them tho :/
What do you use to fix fin rot? I used to have a male betta with fin rot and I ended up just putting in aquarium salt. It was stubborn and continued to rot away. He couldn’t even move anymore.
She did a fabulous job of restoring this little Betta but I do think she could have added some Indian almond leaves, they have helped me so much but either way this restores a bit of faith in humanity
You can also cut the strips vertically so they last twice as long

Damn, this girl has three Fluval Specs. If they’re all the three gallon size (which it looks like they are), that’s about $60 each (USD). So a combined $180 for three tanks, not to mention what’s in them all. And if they’re the five gallon size, that’s even more expensive.
Props to this girl for saving that betta, that’s awesome. But she really didn’t need to spend so much on those tanks. You can get tanks that size for much less, and just purchase filters separately. But I guess if she can afford all those tanks, she’s allowed to do what she wants.

I want to talk about my betta rescue. It is sad. One day I went to the mall near us and while there I I needed pet stuff. While at the pet shop I said, " Hey I want to buy a Betta." When I asked the guy he brought me to a pitch dark closet and in there was a TANK FULL OF BETTAS THAT WEE TORN TAILS FINS AND MOST DEAD. I quickly chose the most damaged one and bought it. I have been 3 years and Karen my betta is still living.
The reason why the man put the bettas in the closet was that no one was buying them and he just left them to die. Hope someone rescued more out of there. Poor fish I even saw an albino betta DEAD.

I rescued a black orchid betta a few months ago-he had horrribbllee columnaris-big cotton growth on his lower fins. Treated him for a couple weeks and he made a full recovery. However-the last couple weeks he hasn’t been doing well. His lower fins are decaying again and he’s so lethargic. Not sure what to do to help him except keep water changing and medicinr

My betta jumped out its tank yesterday 😢 . I turned off the light for the day out of respect ✊🏼 but it heavily planted so it’s back on today .
My betta had jumped out of her tank too. We quickly scooped her up from the floor and plopped her back into the water. She lived thankfully, but ended up getting sick and dying later
my mom actually got a betta about a year ago and she didn't listen to me about getting a proper

Bettas can survive with heaters and filters, although it is nice to have for them. My moms friend keeps her betta in a one gallon without a heater and filter, she’s been travelling with him for a few years now. I find it sweet that he goes everywhere with her
I’m working on setting up a planted aquarium with some drift wood in a 10 gallon tank.
Sponge filters don’t seem to do the job for our tank though.
I had this wonderful betta fish, lived for a good year. Kept him healthy, got him on my birthday and died a year later. He was laying on his side, after him being like this for a week, I looked up some information about what was happening. He got swim bladder disease. I kept a nice schedule for feeding, but my mom replied with “I fed him when you left the house, he looked hungry!”

I had a betta that I rescued I wasn't planning to get her but I was in a small pet shop and I saw this poor female betta in a 5 gallon with 2 other female betta just absolutely ripping her up her tail was torn and it just broke my heart to see. I left but couldn't stop thinking about her. so I went back with the intention to take her with me I admit knew almost nothing about fish but I knew she wouldn't make it in there. when I went back she was sitting on the bottom and she literally looked like she could die any minute I don't think she was able to eat because of the harassment. I will admit I made some mistakes her first "tank" was a half gallon but I moved her out to a 3 with minimal décor to leave more swimming room(I know still not enough...) she perked up after eating soon after her tail mended and she was such a sweet fish she lived for 4 years. I definitely made some mistakes but I don't think she lived a bad life and I'm certain she would have been dead if I didn't take her. My next Betta tank I will make sure my fish have more than enough room the important thing is learning from your mistakes!

Rescued a Betta that I thought was black... It turned out to be red and blue 🤯 the fin rot on the fish was awful. Sadly it died in a heater malfunction 😭

I was so happy when i successfully raised 2 dwarf frog tadpoles from eggs. Its been 4 months and bojji and kage are almost fully formed frogs! 🐸

These rescues do pull at the heartstrings, but at the end of the day the important thing is whether or not they were purchased.
If a fish was purchased, even if it was in this sorry state, it does no good. If the store let's you take the nearly dead fish for free because they think it's a "defective product" or "lost cause" then that is fine. But purchasing the fish only perpetuates and supports everything that led to those fish suffering in the first place.
