    Welcome to my neck of the woods! This is a great opportunity to thank you. My wife and I just took our first paddle in our brand new 380 Explorer! It’s our first kayak. It was solid as a rock in choppy St. Andrew Bay waters! We still managed to average 2mph for our 3 mile maiden voyage! Not bad for a couple of rookies. I learned about the Sea Eagle from your videos. I am a 65 year old bicycle rider and now a kayaker!

    Kayak Cliff, The Bixpy skeg motor would be an excellent assist for paddling upstream .
    Eliminating the need to use shuttle service.
    Definitely would help out with paddlers that don’t have a strong paddle stroke.
    Can’t wait to see you connect it to the Razorlite!

    Hey Cliff! Super video! I never realized just how fast the Explorer could travel with the Bixby motor! Thanks for showing us that! So glad you missed the storm. The weather here has been windy and cold for the last two weeks after we thought we were finally into spring. It was in the high 80s for nearly a week and then the weather flipped back into winter again. They're forecasting rain and cold for the next two weeks and possibly some snow this weekend. Can't wait to get out on the water.
    Hope to have the new channel up and running in early June! I'll be watching for your Bixby review! Keep up the great work!🛶

      Hi 👋 Terry - You are correct. If you are going to be in shallow water, I would definitely remove the Bixpy as it would get hung up, or even battered on rocks
      etc…. Basically, if your paddling is going to take you somewhere shallow enough that you would remove the skeg, I would remove the bixpy as well. Hope all
      is well, get out there, Summer is about to begin!!!

I remember back in the 80s and 90s, they would leak all the time on watches, camera housings, etc. Now nothing ever seems to leak. It must be the silicone gaskets we use nowadays.

    I hate to break this to you, but I just discovered that Bixpy has an Indiegogo campaign until May 4th for the updated J-2 motor and battery, now called K-1.
    I just ordered. New anodized aluminum case which is stronger and dissipates heat better, 2 inches smaller, more powerful and quieter. I paid a little less than the current model. The new K-1 will ship after campaign.

    • @KayakCliff

    Hi Cliff, first time viewer and now a subscriber! Great production values.
    I’ve only kayaked a few times, done more canoeing. Definitely hoping to get a kayak this summer.
    RE the requirement to get a license for a powered boat, maybe WE should start agitating for a Class One e-canoe, like a class one e-bike? Also, I think Canada, or at least Ontario allows trolling motors without any licensing

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great idea, I don’t think they’ll fall for it down here in Texas though. If it’s so much, has a propeller with a wind up, rubber band, you have to put a registration on it. I’m just getting away with it for now, because you can’t even tell there’s one underneath it. Thank you for watching, and commenting!

  • @classicarcadeamusementpark4242

    Have you registered your Sea Eagles Cliff?
    In most states (if not all), they require the boat to be registered to use any kind of motor. Even a trolling motor. In some states you all have to take a boater's course to use any kind of motor.
    Typically once your registered in your home state, you can use it in most other states but always check online as each state has their own requirements.
    I made a clip on set of plate I laminate with the numbers & registration stickers on them, and use a shoe string to tie them to the pontoons of the boat.

      I don’t have mine registered as I switch it between 3-4 different kayaks all the time. No way in you know what, that I’m registering 4 boats that use
      the motor. Honestly, with this motor mounted below the boat, it is invisible and you are very unlikely of ever having it discovered.

    I wanted to install a 12 volts Trolling motor in my kayak but have not done that because I understand that once you install a motor in your kayak in Florida you have to register and get an FL number.

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mindful kayaker - Yes, to remain legal, in most states that I’m aware of, you will definitely need to register your kayak if any type of motor is mounted
      to it. Some I have talked to have made the observation that’s it is difficult to tell that a motor is mounted when you are using the Bixpy, unless you are going abnormally fast, then you will stick out. Not sure I would follow that philosophy, but they do have a point.

  • @rikdeere
    @rikdeere ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, what a nice addition to the Sea Eagle Explorer. One thing that did come to mind is whether the Sea Eagle would need a state registration since it would technically be a “powered” boat?

    • @mikehubble8976
      @mikehubble8976 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a bixpy on a Razorlight in Maryland. Technically it's a must register combo. I never bothered with registering, it's very well hidden and you paddle with it looking like any other kayak on the water.

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, absolutely, in most states, once you power a boat in any way, you will need registration numbers on
      your hull. Even if it is a rubber band and propeller all wound up! Just make sure you are not paddling noticeably too fast, when there is a warden or
      water cop around. . . . 😏

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there, thank you so much for watching and commenting! I have noticed on all boats that I've put it on (RazorLite / FastTrack / Explorer, the Bixby does not diminish tracking capability when the motor is off. It even feels like the boat is about the same speed, although I'm sure it is a little less, just because the motor is a little bit bigger than the skeg. It performs surprisingly well, better than I thought!

    Great video Cliff 💪... Wonder if you could attach this to an eddyline sitka kayak ? It would fly !

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Theoretically, you could buy a plastic skeg base from Sea Eagle and adhere it to the bottom of a hard shell kayak with 3M VHB tape assuming there is not a hard chine down the center of the kayak. You would want to mount it to a flat section of the kayak, then you could slide the Bixby in. I might try it out in the future
      as a test!

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for watching and commenting, Mikal! I am not aware of a rudder mounted motor mount for inflatables. I’m sure it’s possible to MacGyver some thing though….. have you checked Bixpy‘s website, they have all types of mounts. On the fast track, the draft is very shallow. Probably only 3 inches without the skeg, and 6 inches with the skeg? I am totally guesstimating here. Where the motor mounts are in the skeg adapter on the fast track, it begins to slope upward, which minimizes the exposure of the motor a little. Just make sure that you don’t paddle through super shallow areas. If necessary, get out and remove. I know, sometimes that is easier said than done. Hope this helps.

    Hey Cliff, love the Bixspy, however, your link goes to an updated page from Sea Eagle and the one you have is no longer available, and perhaps been replaced with the K-1. Hello 👋 Steve - Thanks for watching and commenting! The Aquaglide Chelan model you reference is a great boat! I’m assuming you do want a
      tandem boat, not two individual kayaks? I cannot speak specifically to the Aquaglides, because I have never used one, but I can say it would be
      similar to the Sea Eagle FastTrack. Sea Eagle would have two FastTracks for tandem paddlers, the longest one would actually hold 3 paddlers
      if needed. If you don’t need to store much the 385FT would be perfect, if you do want to transport a lot of gear too or a large pet, the largest
      FastTrack would be the one you want. These FastTracks paddle beautifully and are EXTREMELY stable:

      My review of the FastTrack - th-cam.com/video/Nw5ZhcsM8vg/w-d-xo.html
      If you want something a little more high performance, very efficient paddling, very stiff with a hard shell kayak feel - I highly recommend the
      Sea Eagle RazorLite line of kayaks. This is a narrower kayak than the Aquaglide Chelan at 30’’ wide. The whole boat is made with high pressure
      drop stitch material, so the whole boat has a stiffer feel and performs beautifully. They make the RazorLite in Tandem or Solo. I’ll attach the RazorLite

    Enjoyed your video as always! Been trying to decide between the Bixpy versus an electric trolling motor for my Sea Eagle 385 Fast Track for which I have the motor mount. The Bixpy is small and light, but expensive at $1200. You can pick up a trolling motor for around $150 and spend as little as $125 or so for a deep cycle battery and another $100 for a battery box. With the trolling motor you can pivot it up easily out of the water in shallow or weedy situations. What are your thoughts on these two different solutions? I love the Bixpy concept but my wallet says I can accomplish the same results with the trolling motor for far less! Anxious to hear your reply!

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi 👋 Gil - You make some great points! To me the big advantage with the Bixby is it is mounted smack dab in the center of the kayak and is is oriented
      perfectly straight forwards. You can literally paddle as you normally paddle your kayak without any different feel to the paddling experience, you are just
      going faster. With a trolling motor mounted off to the side, the kayak leans a little to the side and with the back stroke of your paddle, can you get full extension
      with the paddle with the motor potentially in the way? Have you noticed your paddling having to be different, while your trolling motor is in operation? As
      always, thanks so much for watching and commenting with thought provoking ideas. . . . 👍

    • @gilfolsom5980
      @gilfolsom5980 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Cliff! Thanks for your response! As of yet I do not have a motor for my FastTrack, thus the quandry. You make an excellent point on the center mounted position of the Bixpy in making it easier to keep the kayak going straight. Of course with the trolling motor you can easily turn the tiller handle a little bit one way or the other to keep the kayak heading in the right direction without the need for using a kayak paddle at all. At least that is what I am imagining, but having never had either motor I do not know for sure.

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gil - I think it just boils down to . . . . Do you want to be able to paddle as you normally paddle, just with faster speed? Or, do you want to tiller operate
      the FastTrack as you would a typical mounted motor? With the Bixby, you’ll be able to paddle just like you always do, I don’t believe it will work well
      paddling normally with a tiller mounted trolling motor, if paddling is what you want to do. Also the weight of a lead acid trolling motor batter is around
      65 lbs., which is awkward, compared to the Bixpy motor and battery coming in at under 10lbs. total.

    • @KateHug
      @KateHug ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KayakCliff You can solve the battery weight by getting a lithium battery instead. We use our PS more often than our explorer and found that a great set up for us is to put two 100AH lithium batteries with a trolling motor and that give us the ability to paddle as we choose or switch to motor when we just want to cover the distance. My husband loves to paddle and I love to take nature photos so we generally use both the paddles and trolling motor each trip. Since we got this set up we generally cover 20 miles a day. We have gone further and believe that if we wanted to we could cover 33 to 34 miles just on the motor in addition to whatever amount we have paddled that day. All together I have around 750 in the batteries, boxes, and motor. It works well on the explorer as well but there is only room to take one battery which cuts our range down but still is pretty good.

    Hey Cliff, when you add one of these motors to your kayak, do you then have to register it when you’re in public waters in Texas or any other states? I know that unnoted kayaks and canoes and paddle boards do not need to be registered. But according to the regulations once you add a motor, they need to be registered. So I was just curious what your take on that is. Thanks for your excellent content

    • @KayakCliff

      Yes, by law when you add any form of propulsion, that is not human to a kayak, you need to register it with your local state officials. That being said, I have about 10 inflatables that this motor operates on. I am NOT registering 10 separate inflatables. When you are operating this motor, it is virtually invisible.......🫥 you should do what you feel comfortable with.

      Hi Michael! Yes, the Bixpy will absolutely fit the FastTrack angler 385FTA. All the skeg mounts / receivers are the same on all Sea Eagle boats and paddle boards, even though the skegs may change in design, they all will slide into the Skeg receiver underneath the boat. I'm not aware of a way to attach to the back of the boat so it will kick up if you hit an obstruction. Bixpy's site has a bunch of mounting options, maybe they will have something you can use to do that. I have found that the torpedo shaped pointed nose of the bixpy does a great job deflecting off stumps when I bump them. If you hit one just right and got stuck, you could reverse your way out of it. I love the simplicity of the skeg mounting with the bixpy. Let me know if you have any other questions!

      Hi 👋 Kdogg788 - thanks for asking and watching! I guess it comes down to whether you want to break it down into four pieces or not. For travel, breaking down into four pieces is great! You save half a pound going down to the AB50. It is a great paddle, and if you are going to be paddling long distances over a long time, the carbonfiber, half pound lighter upgrade is worthwhile. I do have both paddles, and I do use both paddles. They both are great! For this kayak, you have to have an 8 foot paddle due to the width of the boat. Bottom line, if you plan on paddling longer distances, the lighter panel is easier on the body.

      It's not really a trolling motor in the classic sense like the tiller operated / transom mounted ones that have been out for decades. The Bixby mounts underwater in line with the center of hull of the boat. It's really a paddling assist motor. It allows you to paddle like you would normally paddle a kayak, but at higher speeds without the hassle of having to operate a tiller. You just steer with your paddling stroke like you would steer when you're paddling anyway.

      @raygibson9719 I have never been in the 465 fast track, but I have never heard anything back from anybody that has one, that the tracking is not good. I think it will track just fine! I assume you have not been out in it before? Great boat for multiple people!

    Hello, how fast sea eagle razorlite gan go?

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With a Bixby? Not sure yet, I’m getting ready to do a video on that real soon. Just paddling, you can cruise at about 3 to 3.5 mph and the maximum speed about 5 1/2 mph. I would imagine with a Bixpy and paddling, you cruise at about 5 to 5 1/2 mph and maximum of probably about 8 to 8 1/2 mph. Stay tuned, I will let you know once I do the video.

      @@KayakCliff On hard shell kayak what is the fastest top speed record you have?

      @@KayakCliff in paddling 5 1/2mph on raxorlite, is it sprinting speed?

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be sprinting speed. Cruising speed is just your average speed which would be about 3 mph.

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Fastest sprinting speed for me in a hard shell touring kayak was about 5 1/2 - 5.75 mph.

    Can razorlite be use in wavy seas?

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. I would not launch from a beach where large waves (surf) is coming in and breaking over the bow of my kayak, but out in open water with 1-2’ rolling seas, I am very
      comfortable in the RazorLite.

      @@KayakCliff So it means that the sea eagle razor lite is Very good in rolling and wavy water in any sea?

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are a good paddler and if you are comfortable in a 28’’ wide kayak that has less stability compared to wide kayaks, you will be fine in 1-2’ open
      water seas.
