L/20 is for steel beams such as I/H beams. For steel-reinforced concrete beams, it should be L/12 or L/15 as minimum. I am not a civil engineer, but that is what I've come up.

My question is for span of 7.6m in your earlier tutorial you said for span of 7.6m beam btw two columns the column size will be 400mm x 400mm and that the depth of beam is 7.6m/16. How come in this tutorial you said the depth of beam will be span/20 instead of span over 16. And if 7.6m span the column size is 400 x 400 I am thinking 8m will be 421mm x421mm taking reference from your previous lecture on 7.6m span

These ratios are the "span to depth ratios" are the minimum required so that the beam does not deflect based on it's own self-weight as such whatever depth you get from the basic ratios add say 150mm or 200mm to it to improve the moment resistance capacity of the section else depending on the load applied the beam might fail or require more require rebar ,in which case you will have to widen the width of the beam so that you arrange bars and still have adequate space around them for concrete .

Please tell where you are getting formula? Because i seen a formula...
Depth of beam=L/10 ; Width of beam=L/12. For a 2 floor building but the L should not be greater than 6meters.

Firstly u used L/d formula for calculation of effective depth of beam
Then u said I can bet that it will fail in very first trial...
Then how can i myself decide

Is this formula used in the actual job setting? You said the final depth will still depend on the loading carried by the beam. Won't this require software like etabs or staad?
