  • In this tutorial I have discussed briefly, what should be the maximum distance between two columns for residential buildings. I have also discussed what should be the size of column for residential buildings, be it for single storey or multi storey buildings upto G+3 storey
    In addition to that i have told you how many number of bars to provide for each type of column and of what size as per th thumb rule

    As we know columns are the compression members of a building structure and play an important role in transferring the load from superstructure to substructure. That's why these members should be casted properly by using good quality material and with great care to maintain the stability of the structure for long run.

    I commend your effort to give young engineers quick fix. But please note that the higher you go, the lower the load (as the foundation then the ground floor carries the bulk of the load). So without analysis or design, the size of your columns and area of reinforcements should reduce as you ascend using "rule of thumb".

    what i understand this video guide builder for choosing column size and rebar for typical house construction, which is base on typical normal dead load and live load related to the house, its does't matter how big the house eg; 1000sqft or 2000sqft just follow the column distance and follow the size and rebar, it still safe within that parameter, another word, it easy guide line for diy house build. and i consider u chooses the size of column base on maximum load.

    • @CivilTutor
      @CivilTutor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on the size of your structure and the various loads acting on it. If it is a high rise building, How strong are the winds there? What is the size of your columns, grade of concrete used and if the site lies in a seismic zone.
      As per thumb rule, a span of up to 6meters is quite safe and economical for small constructions i.e. up to G+3 storey buildings.

    Never take steel bars of diameter less than 16mm for more than 1 story building.
    You can have 2 bars of 12mm out of 6 bars column of 9×12 between two bars of 16mm at widest distance side.
