How to make a homemade incubator

- This was our first shot with this home made incubator and there is 26 that hatched out of 31 eggs. The eggs came from my 4 RIW hens and 1 cock that I raised from 2 weeks old. The X on the eggs are to indicate the rotation of the egg, rotate every 8 hours, Ventilation was through the drain plug, they say you need oxygen and that is right but the drain hole is enough and as large as this incubator was venting it was not necessary not to mention that i opened it every 8 hours.. In a forced air incubator (with a fan) the temperature should be 99-99.5*F. In a still air incubator the temperature should be slightly higher, 101-102*F measured at the top of the eggs. I use a thermometer and a hygrometer (which measures humidity) in my incubator. Hygrometers can be purchased quite cheaply at a cigar shop, Radio Shack and I believe even Walmart. You want 45-50% humidity for day 1-18, then 65% for the last few days. Select clean, even shaped, undamaged eggs for incubating. If possible, do not store them too long pre-incubation. Ideally eggs should be set within a week after being laid and after 10 days the hatch-ability of the eggs drops significantly.

Ok i see your video but whats the fan for and where u put the water besides the sponge do u just put it in a small plate under the light or under the eggs
the fan to to keep the air circulating and the water is under the light to help it evaporate this helps maintain the correct conditions in the environment.

Basically you need a controlled environment and the hot water heater thermostat does that. It needs to be set to shut off at about 100 degrees Fahrenheit and you need to have humidity at 50% to 65% for 21 days.

can you hatch eggs once they have been refrigerated? my one favorite hen died and i have 2 eggs from her that i would like to hatch but they have been in the refrigerator for a week.
yes. you can refrigerate the the fertile egg for several weeks before you incubate it.

How do you keep the temperature steady to 100 fh? My incubator keeps rising and lowering, I can't keep it in 100
how high and how low does the temp change? Mine did that too but after adjusting it i found the sweet spot and it kept it steady. what are you using to turn the light on and off?
Can you explain what connections are made to where on your hot water heater thermostat. I bought one like it because the smaller 2 pole type was a higher temp range of 120 to 150 F. Yet, I am not sure what your power source is compared to your connection to the lamp. The fan is run separately?
Dianne Augustine the fan is a separate connection, I use a computer fan. I don't recall how the connections was done with the thermostat but I do recall there where instructions on the back of the thermostat package that indicated what connections went where. For the plug & wires I used a standard class I plug from a night stand light.
I found another video done by hadley 321 and he showed how to separate the upper part from the lower since only the lower piece is needed. This simplified the whole process! I have my unit working now. Testing to get the temperature in range and hope to get a new batch going this evening! My diagram showed how to wire it to another thermostat yet which I certainly didn't want to use. Thanks for your quick response.

4 hens and one rooster. I collected the eggs over a few weeks, kept them at room temperature until i had enough eggs then started the incubation process.
what's the wattage of the bulb? and is there no ventilation??
13 watt CFL bulb. No ventilation as the cooler was large enough plus i opened it every 8 hours to turn the eggs.

Is the light always turned on?
no the hot water heater thermostat controls the light because the light provides the heat. you need to use a CFL bulb an LED or incandescent will not work. LED will never get hot enough and the incandescent bulb will get too hot.

eggs are from my hens did not refrigerate it. they don't need to if using it within 30 days.
did you put water under the eggs ?
no water under the eggs only in the sponge and dish.

Doesn't it need oxygen? I dont see any holes in the incubator.
There is a hole where the drain plug is where my electrical cord comes out. if the unit was less then half the size of the cooler I used it would still be OK.

HugaBuga1 if the egg is fertile it should work. if your asking about eggs at the grocery store that is a no. it will not work.

Airish Pogi the hot water heater thermostat controls the light bulb as it senses temperature. I set it to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. When it gets over 100 it shuts the bulb off.

The temperature should not fall to 80F. The thermostat needs to be set at a very tight range and at 97.5F it should turn on the light bulb. The temp range is 98.5-99.5F, with 98.5 the best. This could slightly vary depending on whose instructions you watch and wether or not you have a fan in there. The chickens die inside the eggs at 104F and develop heart problems if they get too cold. I hope Sefa won't mind that I answered your question.

No. 21 days is it. different species eggs may have shorter or possibly longer hatch times.

+Pankaj Sinh actually you would have to raise the temperature to create a shorter hatch and a lower would drag it out. Both can cause problems with your chicks (splayed legs, crooked toes, ect.) so yeah not a good idea.

not unless its fertile, hasn't been in the fridge more than a few minutes, because the slightest drop in temp. can EASILY kill an egg, especially with chicken eggs, as their shells are super thin... Lol learn your facts before you tell people something they will waste time on to end up having a non fertile egg and having wasted 25 days time...
