The Tiniest Bird You've Ever Seen - Zebra Finch Hatching

  • This is the smallest bird I've ever hatched. After a little Finch had lost her partner, I was asked if she could stay in my big Aviary. When I returned home after picking her up, on the way back she had laid an egg in the little transport box! Birds only do this when they have an egg that needs to be laid.
I knew there was only a small chance she would accept and hatch this egg in an actual nest herself, but I wanted to try before I set plan B in motion…

Yeah birds are weird. When mother birds feed their young babies, they literally stick their whole ass beak into the babies mouth and vomit up food directly into an area in the upper esophagus called the "crop." When birds finally eat on their own, they also collect food in this area before it goes in the stomach. With the baby, you can see the yellow food in the crop after the feeding. This is why it looked like the baby bird was trying to swallow that feeding tube.

I currently am owned by 17 cats. I have raised singletons from 8 hours old…It’s a full time job! Every two hour feeding all day and all night, God bless the Miracle Nipples! Make sure all singletons have socialization with other healthy kittens starting at 4 weeks of age. Otherwise they have difficulty socializing as a feline to people. ❤️

I had finches for a while. They’re the sweetest little things. I had two females and two makes - a pair each of two different kinds. And I ended up with three clutches of eggs over the time I had them. The little ones were taken to a locally owned bird shop to be rehomed. They lived my babies because they were well domesticated. I even saved the life of one of my mama birds. She was passing an egg that broke inside her. I had to carefully remove it and then nurse her back to good health. I had no idea what I was doing but she made a full recovery and developed an even stronger bond with me after that. 💖

As a small boy I raised a Great Tit, Magpie & blackbird.
All adapted to their own kind and the magpie came back to see me for about 6 hrs 1 year later. He tapped on my bedroom window, I took him in to mum and dad's bedroom to show him off.

I think Jenna is a perfect name. Jenna means "Little Bird" and is what we named our tiny kitten when she jumped from the headrest of the front seat to the headrest of the very back bench of our full sized fan. She was always full of energy and spunk, every day making us laugh at her antics and pull out our hair when her courage led her into some potentially dangerous situations. We had to put her down last year, a few months after her 20th birthday. I think this little bird has just as much spirit and a long, happy life ahead of her. ❤️

This is so sweet. This is fantastic documentary storytelling and I adore the final sequence with her! It's amazing how they are so comfortable around you and it goes to show the time and care you put in for them.
I'd never seen a chick without their feathers eat, so I was surprised to see how their neck bulges with their food. I guess that's normal? Now I'm curious...

MaryCarl on Mrs Cog Hill and Cog Hill Farm talks about their crop and how to know when it's full as she hand feeds her baby pigeons. She is born to be a bird whisperer, too.

Birds actually have quite large crops, it just doesn’t occur to us how big they are because usually they are covered with feathers. But in this case, (a featherless baby bird with basically clear skin) we can see wonderfully just how big it is!

Yeah its amazing right! It'd their crop. It fills before the stomach snd when the stomach empties they swallow whats in the crop then repeat. Kind of like storage.

@@anyascelticcreations Ah so that's what they're called! "Crops"! I'm sure it takes some experience and focus to keep from overfeeding them.

@@arthur4494 It does. If I remember correctly, Mary Carl said that they will keep asking for food even after their crop is full. I think she said you go by feel and stop when their crop feels firm because that means it's full. It was pretty cool watching her demonstrate with her baby pigeons. They had feathers already, but when she lifted the feathers we could still see the white food through their skin. And she showed how it was still squishy before it was full.
It must have been so much harder for Alwyn to get it just right with his tiny zebra finch baby.
