I have a 4770k i7 too so good to know the performance difference overclocking makes for arma. So far the standard clock speed has been sufficient but might consider overclocking sometime in the next year now. I have aftermarket cooling but I might look into ways of upgrading that even more before diving into the oc world, maybe even slap a few more fans in since i think i have a couple more slots.
Please do a harddrive VS SSD benchmark, I'm not sure if I want to spend the money on one unless it is a significant boost in framerate

What kind of CPU cooler are you using? My 4770k goes all the way up to 90c with a decent air cooler and it doesn't even overclock over 4 Ghz. :( i lost the silicon lottery.

Im at 4.8Ghz on a i7 4790K and I get 60-70 FPS AVG. on 120 Player servers.
Thomas Graves same setup and same performance for me. Got a 970sli system which I'm switching from to a 1070ti because it's just nuts that arma does not use sli.

8350 from 4ghz stock to 4,6ghz OC gained between 10 to 20 fps. Makes a big difference when you're talking about playing a game at 25fps and 35 or 45 fps ;)
I got the exact same CPU and clocked at the exact same clockspeed. I am going to get another SSD for ArmA and some other shit. Do you think upgrading to a I5-6600K and a Z170 Motherboard + some DDR4 Ram would be worth the cost and would you get enough frames per buck. Would a upgrade for my gtx 780 be better? I almost only play ArmA 3. Maybe will be getting in on BF1.

I've got a i7 6800k at only 3.4 GHz with a 512g SSD 1080gtx twin Corsair liquid cooled fans. Should I try to get to 4.5ghz would it make that much of a difference?

And in october '16 i bought i7 6700 without k. i am a consistent player of big 100-200 people arma 3 project, and for 8 months already i am asking myself maybe i made a mistake? 6700 goes as high as 3.9 ghz in boost, but maybe these 300-400 mhz more i could have juiced out of k version had a chance to change a picture?
Drewski when you said putting the voltage higher will make the heat go up.This is true but just overclocking alone without putting the voltage up will make it run hotter.Think of it like kinetic energy since your making it move faster it needs to cool itself off faster.Meaning even if you do get a great overclocking CPU you will still get higher temps.Not nearly as much as moving the voltage up but your still making it hotter

What is better, getting a 4k monitor that runs at 60Hz with a 4ms, or getting a 1080p monitor that runs at 144Hz with 2ms? (For gaming)

warrenc1903 neither. Theres a 4k monitor that runs at60Hz and has a 1ms response time but still has a fairly cheap price for what it offers. Its the Samsung U28E590D and its what i use, and i can tell you its a great monitor that works phenomenally. The current price for it is $400 which for a 4k monitor with those specs is pretty freakin cheap. I got mine for around $336 at best buy while on sale a while back, and you could probably get it for less if you wait for a sale somewhere, but regardless i highly recommend that if you want a good 4k gaming monitor.

josh green I'm pretty sure they are I used driver booster 4.0 to update them all today but still the same problem, when I go to my driver manager thing or whatever it's called they all seem up to date. (No yellow explanation mark by them telling me to update or repair)

Okay first off do you have a AMD CPU or Intel and is your GPU integrated or is it a card (Nvidea or AMD.)You can find what the CPU is by opening file explorer right clicking on the computer icon and clicking properties.It will say what your CPU is. For the GPU if you don't use integrated then I will tell you what the next step would be
Switched now to an i7 7700K and the difference is massive! I doubled the fps with my GPU!
Can Arma run more then 8 threads? How L3 cache will affect on performance? Also is any difference between dual and quad channel memory? And is there any SLI/CF support?
Arma uses at most 2 threads, L3 cache will have no effect, Quad channel runs faster and is 4 sticks as opposed to 2, and there is support for SLi & Crossfire but it is pointless as GPU does pretty much nothing in ArmA.
Do you record with a seperate computer? Whenever I use OBS it kills my games...

I got a huge boost in most of my games OC'ing to 4.2GHz off of 3.5Ghz. However, I had to do a BIOS update (GPU and ram issues) and now no overclock is stable for me unless I put a ton of voltage into it, which really sucks. :( glad to see that OC'ing has a noticeable difference in Arma though!

Corenne Taveren it's weird because MSI is known for it's well built BIOS, personally I've an ASRocK Z170A-X1 and the bios is really tricky for Overclocking but ASRocK is not a big company so it's understandable
Yea, I have three other MSI boards and they were great. I did read that bios updates made previous OC profiles "broken" and that OCing again would be different, but to think I'd lose the OC ability altogether? I might just have a bad board. :(

I just got from 42.6 fps to 47.3 fps in "Yet Another Arma Benchmark" by changing the windows power options to high performance.
My average fps in arma 3 is between 0 and 25 fps in king of the hill. Everything is on low or disabled. Thanks to the overclock i get about a 20% boost on my cpu and about a 15 fps difference on king of the hill. Thanks a lot now i can really start to play king of the hill without freezing. :)

I'm happy I purchased the i7. Got it on sale(orginal $330) for $280; so why not send the extra 50? Anyways, just happy I got it, because I see games becoming more like arma in the future and being very CPU intensive.
GTX 1070 i7 6700K 4ghz. I have 90 FPS on a root server on max settings but on every normal server I ever played on I only get 30-40 fps in a city with not much players

Even overclocking experts like. Jayztwocents say that its nearly impossible to break a cpu with overclocking. If it is overvolted ut gets unstable and you cant boot and it shows you an error message that tells you to press f2 to return to standard cpu settings. If you cant cool your CPU it throttles itself so it doesnt get as hot anymore.
Phoenix ... just fried my 8 core amd FX last week by OC... not instantly, but over time the heat broke down the internal heat dispersing contacts and i was idling at 70*C and getting laggy with simple tasks. replaced only the proc and am running cool again.
I had one for quite some time. Never fried it though ^^ Just stick around for amd zen, compared to Intel its gonna be a great value option with pretty much bang on the same performance.

Most of the current CPU's will thermal throttle and that shouldn't happen with 99% of them after 2012.
But you pretty much purchased a portable george foreman grill with the 8350.

I tried to OC my i7 2600k with stock cooler and went above 80c I'm bad at this.
Faster RAM also surprisingly really increases FPS. 15% increase in FPS from 1600mhz to 2133mhz. Imagine 3200mhz Ram with your CPU at 4.5Ghz 0_0 and on an SSD

I saw a video on internet how 2133mhz vs 3200mhz perform on benchmarks, the 3200mhz have only around 7% fps boost while the price could be double and this is only in case everything is high-end pc with really fast speeds, buying 3200mhz is working fine only if you don't care about the money and buy the newest and most expensive parts on the market.
Hololand I'm waiting on a build I've ordered with a 6-core i5 8600K I'm going to overclock to 5.0ghz+ and delid/replace the IHS for better cooling and cool with a 280mm radiator, got 16GB Corsair Vengeance 3200MHz Ram and installed on a Corsair M.2 SSD with 3000mb/s read speed and a EVGA 1080 FTW I'll overclock. Will let you know what frames I get when I finally get it sent to me

tech kid Arma 3 is using only one Cpu core, 2047MB Ram, and Gpu load is about 50% on Arma3. SLi on Arma3 is a bad idea for maybe wait dor the next patch 1.68

RAM speeds will not give you better performance as long as it's decent like 1600MHZ.1600MHZ and 2133MHZ will only give you around a 5fps boost which for the price is not worth it at all.

Damn. This makes me even happier about my 6800K. Gonna custom water cool it and get it to around 4.4Ghz. With the OC its gonna be like a 4790K overclocked to the maximum and 2 cores on top.
Just remember- Broadwell is royally terrible at overclocking, most people can get those chips to barely break 4.3GHz. But I hope you get a good OC!
I know, it doesnt OC too well but most people can get it to 4.3 to 4.5, even without a custom loop.
Phoenix Yeah. The funny thing about it is that, with Broadwell-E, temperature isn't the thing that holds most people back, but instead the stability of the chips. You'll probably be fine getting 4.4GHz on a decent to high-end air cooler.

Yeah I'm an a CX650. Have the MSI Gaming X 1070, and a I7 6700k OC to 4.4 Ghz on my CM212 EVO. No problems 750 is overkill for a single 1070

No comment giving a specific number would be accurate. But your FPS will be certainly above average, Provided you have some decently fast RAM and run on an SSD you can expect to stay above 30fps 90% of the time.
I'm using a AMD FX 6300 4.5 GHz and I really need a faster CPU. Using an AMD HD 7950 1070/1375MHz, too. In a few months I will build a new one with a fast Intel or Ryzen CPU. :)

For Arma, do NOT ever use an AMD CPU. Buy an Intel.
FPS doesn`t depend on the thing that do you have a HDD or SSD, it just speeds up loading of missions/locations
not average fps but in some games like Arma it helps remove stuttering when flying at high speeds ect. overall it's worth it

AMD FX 6300 3.5->4.6 GHz gave me some 25-30 percent higher average FPS. Tested pre-1.54. Gf 660 Ti.

Nope. Medium range air cooling but with extreme case airflow optimization. My secret is... I don't do stress testing using heat viruses like Pi. I used ArmA itself. Using heat viruses on a rig intended specifically for gaming is pointless.

Drewski, I've been running a i-7 3930k OC'd at 3.8 GHz for about a year now with a GTX 970. It's been on my SSD and is currently on my HDD. Performance improvement I saw was when I switched to my new monitor which supports HDMI as opposed to the older DVI monitor I was running.
with an i5 6600k and msi z170a sli motherboard, i was able to get 4.6Ghz @ 1.328 volts:D

I have an Intel Core i5-3470S. I used process lasso to unpark them, i switched over to XMBTMALLOC, and I edited some stuff in windows to allow larger page files.

What is your CPU? GPU doesn't really matter much in ArmA.
I overclocked my ryzen r3 1200 to 3.8ghz and got 10fps boost on arma 3.

Its worth it got about 20 FPS more but you shouldnt Risk it if u dont buy a new in the next week/month because you can grill ur cpu with it xD

I think a Graphics card is actually worth it... had a 960, upgraded to 1060 and got like 30 FPS + ... Inside cities a 5-10 FPS boost.. (Both in Multiplayer) (and for a viewdistance of around 1500-1600 on both) I prob. would get even more if I overclock my CPU but I don't really feel like I need to tbh...
Also upgraded from a 960 to a 1060, it gives me around 80-100% more frames in games. In something like arma you won't notice a difference. (i7-6700k runs at 60+ frames most of the time in Arma anyways)

Sounds like DX11 limitations. Though Arma 3 might be doing other CPU intensive tasks that it waits for before rendering a frame. The problem with OC tends to be instability, at least in my experience. A better graphics card really helps out if your rendering more pixels per frame. Like using 4K monitors. But if your just using 1080p then going from 980 to 1080 won't be that much, if any, a change.

Online... Actually just got done playing some exile as well was averaging anywhere between about 65-80. Server side can always play a factor in how well it runs online though. Single player it eats it alive. I have a i-7 5960X Oc'd to 4.3

On a ultra preset with a i5 6600k I've got 29.2 fps on average.
I've overclocked my CPU from 3.5 to 4.4Ghz and with my custom preset I've got 43 average fps instead of 30.1 average fps with the 3.5ghz configuration. Thx for your awesome video :D
What Motherboard u used to OC?
It's not CPU intensive but it does rely on the cpu more than the gpu; It hardly utilizes the cpu at all and this is why an overclock improves fps so much in Arma, you're boosting the cpu' raw speed which delivers a higher ipc. Just like Drewski said none of the startup parameters are ever likely to help, none of the mem allocators and the maxmem, maxvram crap. The ONLY way to ever get this game running beautifully for everyone is if Bohemia scrap the engine and start again pretty much. Not likely to happen.

Can I run arma with i5 6400
As said in the video, clock speeds matter. If you got an overclocking supported Z170 board you could maybe flash a late 2015 special bios and up the baseclock in order to get around 4,5 to 5 GHz stable under 1,4V if you are lucky, some non-Z170 boards support this method to, but those are rare. If so, remember that unexpected shutdowns may occur due to too low voltages or insufficient cooling.
On stock it would run a bit worse than the baseline of this video.

Yeah, xbox live is a crucial thing, which you have to buy. But if you just play singleplayer, xbox has pretty good optimized games. Xbox Scorpio (idk what the name is) is coming out soon, going to be as good as a computer for around 300-500 which is good.
Midnnight except pc has more games and the fact that scorpio will more than likely have a small change in fps. Oooh 4k that youcan only see with a 4k tv. cool. and consoles will never be as strong as pcs with newest parts
