I'm still playing with acrylics! Adding wax medium, adding matte medium, putties, gesso, etc etc.... acrylics are very good for mixed media formats bc they dont budge when you lay down all the other media on top.

    • @RitsychServare
      @RitsychServare 2 ปีที่แล้ว +138

I would think acrylics are "a whole lot easier to work with" because you can layer on top in case you make an error. The thing about some of these professionals is that they tend to be biased with certain mediums because of the style they do, plus, the accessibility for these paint isn't always prevalent in some places. Acrylics isn't exactly limiting but that depends on how you make art.

Yeah I feel like acrylic is the beat for beginners, because they are versatile and dry up quickly also very forgiving. If you use it thick and make mistake you can just layer over it. If you want to try to paint like water colour you can just dilute it with water. You can use brush or palette knife like oil painting but it dries so much faster.

Gouache and watercolor have the same amount of pigment in them (as long as your comparing study to study and artist to artist quality) however the pigments in gouache are slighlty rougher making it slightly more opaque, it also has chalk in it which makes it even more opaque and also matt. Apart from that they are indeed identical.
Side note, the amount pigment doesn't determine the opaqueness in any paint, only the colour strength (similair to salt making something taste more like salt, pigment only makes your vehicle look more like the pigment). However the colour of the pigment does determine how opaque something is, modern ultramarine pigment for instance is always relatively transparent (except in gouache because of the chalk).

If I want an oil effect, I can switch from brush to knife and not worry about accidentally ruining it once I'm done coz it takes a year to dry completely.

If it doesn't have sizing the paint just sinks into the fibers and you're less able to use water to spread your paint around in washes. Instead I would recommend buying Stillman & Bern Beta sketchbooks. The paper is sized and a sturdy 180lb. weight so it resists warping when you paint with watercolors. I've used them for my sketchbooks for years now.

my mud works on every surface imaginable, wood, canvas, the right kind of paper, and i’m a crafter so it’s great for me! i mainly do cartoon-y portraits with a lot of color blocking and less blending. I also do sunsets sometimes and they blend well if you work quickly. Acrylic also drys fast unlike oil so it can be tricky :) but if you want more realism with a ton of blending and transparent layering, acrylic probably wont work great for that. every medium is meant for certain things so every artist will have different opinions and preferences :)

I started with acrylic in high school and have had so much trouble learning watercolor. I'm used to putting in my base color and then adding lights and shadows later, but with watercolor that doesn't work (at least not for me. I've never been properly taught so I have no idea what I'm doing). It's a learning curve and it's very easy to get frustrated

I too prefer matte over gloss and we have a matte acrylic thats pretty good and produced locally here in South Africa. I have dabbled in watercolor and gouache ...but acrylic have been my go to since childhood for some reason.

Painted with acrylic when I was a teen, hated it, assumed it meant painting just wasnt for me. Started painting with watercolours when I got older, rekindled the love for art I had as a kid. Sometimes the problem isnt you, its the format.

it’s probably glossy because of the type of acrylic you used. there’s the glossy finish, but there’s also a matte finish.
one time i was dumb and bought glossy black instead of matte black. when i finished the painting, everything was matte but the black was glossy 😭

In school we were forced to use watercolours but never really taught how to use them and I know that I personally prefer acrylics because it feels like I have more control over my paintings and I find them easy to use and produce something nice but my friends and I still argue because they prefer watercolours. I don't see how watercolours are better but if you can use watercolours right it looks amazing

I mean, acrylics are more like oil paints in a lot of ways. It's a whole different medium and no matter where you start you'll have to find different ways to play with the mediums' strengths and weaknesses. I for one absolutely love acrylics, they're my go-to paint, with watercolor second. And to note they're water proof once they have dried, you can thin them with water when they're still fresh.

you can get matte acrylics and acrylics can be mixed with water before application to make it flow more and increase transparency

I started using acrylics in just the last year, but mix a little water in and sort of glaze with them to building up colors. I enjoy them because they dry fast and I can keep moving quickly.. you want to use something sturdy like illustration board with them though

Your timing could not have been more perfect lol I was looking into buying some recently since I’ve gotten into watercolors. I used to be heavily into painting with acrylic though so when I saw there was acrylic gouache I wondered what the difference was between them.

I think my favorite is gouache, I like being able to do very blocky and colorful pieces like with acryclics, but also make it more sheer with water like watercolor.

There are mediums you can mix with acrylics to get rid of that glossy texture. Generally though I only use acrylics for when I want to apply a thick paint texture to my art.

I love the texture of acrylics, even if it’s harder to work with the works that can be produced, there’s something raw about them which I enjoy

The main difference between watercolor and acrylic:
With watercolor, the paper has to have texture. With acrylic, the paint makes the texture. You can use acrylic on any kind of paint and it'll still look interesting.

You can water them down and they’ll come out flatter without streak lines and depending on the acrylic they can come out Matt

Painting with mud is exactly how I would describe acrylics…but when you water them down a bit the act nicer and more similar to acrylic gouache

There are also acrylics with matte finish, you just need a specific type. I also don't like the glossy finish but I found ones with matte and it's fantastic.
