  • Hey Guys! As many of you know I'm currently in the BL Series 'Cutie Pie' and 'KinnPorsche The Series'. Lately I've been getting a lot of questions about what it's like shooting so I decided to do a little Q&A about what it's like working on set. Hope you enjoy!

    I love how kindly spoken Perth is. When explaining how long fight scenes take he said: "Fight scenes for me have taken the longest" and immediately added, "Not because people aren't performing them well but because they take the most amount of time." I've noticed him correcting or adding something to what he previously said a few times in this video and it just helped make sure that there really are no misunderstandings but also shows how Perth doesn't want to blame others. He's not blaming any production company, any staff/other professionals, or any other actors. He simply genuinely wants us to know how everything works. And this may seem like a small detail but I love this. It just shows again that, like Perth said himself, how different he is from Ken because he is anything but mean.

    Acting a scene where there's romance or flirtation - is it ever awkward to have staff around? When you're acting in a relationship with someone how do you not catch feelings for them? How do you unwind from your character? When you're around people you've acted with - is there like.. danger of slipping into character or does it just dissipate with time? Is there a distinct separation between actor and character and does that ever blur when you're spending SO much time with one person? The psychological aspect of acting is really interesting to think about.

      Not necessarily, as it is just a job.
      (Is this better wording, drewisdreaming?)

    • @drewisdreaming
      @drewisdreaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว +103

      calling it "just a job" is HEAVILY diluting and disrespecting the amount of work actors put into their roles. given the entire concept of immersing yourself in your role even outside of the context of filming so you connect to your character on a more personal and emotional level, it's perfectly reasonable for there to be a mental meshing that can be hard to break away from. when you're devoting almost all your time to becoming someone else, at what point do you end and the character begins?
      of course, because they are professionals, this distinction and compartmentalization gets easier over time. but that isn't to say that it doesn't and hasn't happened even with the most decorated actors, so op's questions are completely logical and reasonable.
      also, implying that there's no possible way that someone can ever be attracted to their coworker simply BECAUSE it's a job or that it's unprofessional somehow to catch feelings for someone you work closely with in a romantic context (something you literally can't even control) is really out of touch with reality lol. where were you for all the couples that got together during filming for a romantic story? i'm not saying this is necessarily always true or even just true for perth, but completely dismissing the notion outright is really weird and disillusioned lol

    • @drewisdreaming
      @drewisdreaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@BMB200 @Martius Black you're not even addressing the actual issue. don't try to strawman me-nobody was disputing that acting is a job, are you serious? what i SAID is to not call it "JUST a job" as a way to reduce the actor's emotional investment to their work. if you don't have a livelihood that you're passionate about, that's fine, but pushing that rhetoric on other people you don't even know personally is depressing as fuck lol
      also, i don't know if english is your first language, and if not, then it's understandable. however, your original phrasing of "necessarily" does not line up with your explanation. using the word necessarily at that point in the sentence attaches it to the concept "falling for someone". if what you said was actually true, you would have phrased your statement in a way that "necessarily" refers to "whether this happened or not". what you ACTUALLY said simply means "i don't see why [an actor] would fall for [their coworker], it's just a job." with that phrasing, attaching "it's just a job" on the end of the same sentence and same topic, you are directly saying that it being "just a job" is the reason an actor wouldn't be attracted to their coworker. like i said before, there have been a multitude of real-life examples where this absolutely isn't the case, so my original argument of this type of perspective being removed from reality is fully intact.

    • @drewisdreaming
      @drewisdreaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @Martius Black i'm not heated. i said what i said because it was a direct response to your reply. if you're gonna strawman my arguments, of course i have to break it down in a way that's simple.
      and yet, you are STILL misunderstanding my point even after i explained multiple times. it doesn't matter that to you it's just a job, my point is that just because you PERSONALLY view it like that, that doesn't mean that everyone does too. and your original comment operates under the assumption that the op's original questions were somehow invalid because you think that a job is just a job. my *point* is that not everyone thinks that way, and there are plenty of people (especially in jobs relating to the arts/creativity) who don't view their job as just a job, just a way to make money, etc. are there people like that? sure! is that a reason to disregard the WEALTH of actors whose jobs intertwine with their lives and personality, that mesh very heavily whether they're in a work setting or not? nope! you *are* being bold to assume people in a (presumably) very different type of job and work environment from you view their lives the same way you do. and, taking a page from your own book, the "job is just a job" mentality isn't the default.
      speaking of, i also never said that being attracted to your coworkers is the default, so what the hell does that mean? like, genuinely, i'm honestly confused. the entire point of my comment in the first place was to point out that not every situation is the same and that you two were completely ignoring a massive section of people who directly contradict the narrative you're pushing. it was literally jut about a different perspective. but you've come back arguing against points i didn't even make, taking my arguments and twisting them to fit your own side, etc etc-the fact that this is even an "agree or disagree" thing is baffling to me. i thought it was pretty clear that this was an issue of both sides being technically right. if it wasn't, then that's my bad.
      the problem isn't with your personal perspective, it's 1. the way you keep coming back with strawman arguments to things i wasn't even saying and 2. portraying your arguments as if they somehow cancel out mine just because they are yours and your perspective. you've been consistently framing your rhetoric from your own point of view, which isn't an inherently bad or wrong thing, but it DOES mean that your opinion is subjective and biased because of your own experiences. i've been consistently speaking about other people, real life actors who ACTUALLY have this job and view it that way. i'm referencing fact and genuine situations, my "theory" put into effect through actual actors who think this way. are there actors who think the way you're saying? absolutely! but that doesn't mean that they're suddenly the majority (or in this case, perth himself is) just because you personally think that way. it doesn't matter who's "right or wrong", what matters is that you not disregard and write off other very real instances and mindsets just because you haven't experienced them yourself.
      i don't really intend to reply about this again. "agree to disagree", or whatever.

    • @lilydrimm6626
      @lilydrimm6626 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@drewisdreaming Mmmmh i see *someone* has deleted their replies huh... In any case (i haven't read all of yours, just the first one) I really agree with you. As much as is it a job and with time and experience you get to sperate yourself with you character a bit easier, it's still part of the job to be immersed in someone else's feelings... And you can't really control who you are attracted to. Which I wonder if it might be the reason why some chemistry really seem off on some shows... Can't get along with anyone. But in any case, there is a loooot of known actors out there who have ended up marrying or getting together with a costar. Even after years of experience, so i guess sometimes it's just inevitable.

      YES! This is what I would like to hear about as well. But I don't think he will as they have non disclosure agreements for sure which means they can't share too much about the procedures/ practice (good and bad) in the industry. Also, he is pretty new to the industry as well, I wouldn't want him to be placed in a compromising situation. I liked his character in Cutie Pie but the story really didn't do it for me, it had too many bad BL tropes so kinda stopped watching it. I'm not against watching KinnPorshe as I do love action shows, maybe I should give it a try and see.
      Anyway, what's more interesting for me is as he is Australian and here in Australia we have more pro-lgbt views and have legalised same sex marriage. When I hear him I find it strange that an Australian person would take part in BL rather than lgbt series if that makes sense. If I was his parent or sibling I would defs be giving him and everyone a damn earful about lgbt rep and all of that. However, of course he can do what he wants but I'm just very passionate about lgbt related things.
      I wish the BL tv show industry would change but for that to happen Japan manga BL industry which is the originator is the genre needs to go through a massive change/ revolution as well. If GL genre can change since there are female and male writers and many stories are lgbt+ inclusive so can the BL genre, we just need to educate ourself and create better stories.
      PS: I mean no offence to Perth as he is a wonderful person but yeah lgbt related things are something I'm very passionate about hence the long rant, sorry about that too. I'm really glad he made this channel and keeps us all entertained and informed.

      @@sunnyv7745 @Sunny V I love your passion for progress with regard to LGBT+ as it relates to BL (with its history of problematic tropes and a fetishistic angle, which is what I'm assuming you are concerned about). I feel that progress is already taking place within the BL genre as consumers and creators are being influenced by the sincerity and compassion coming from Thai culture, as well as the fact that each new young generation that becomes the BL audience and BL authors naturally bring healthier ideals about LGBT+ and those expectations are then influencing the genre. Am I making any sense? Lol 🤣 I'm not saying we don't need progress, so I guess I'm just feeling grateful for the progress I am seeing already. Anyway, I also would love to hear Perth's thoughts about the BL genre across the various countries' cultures, and about LGBT+ representation and advocacy in the industry. This is really interesting for me, as I want to study performance arts. How do you maintain continuity in terms of facial expressions and hand gestures or even body language between long shots, close ups and so on? I know, as you said, the editors will choose specific frames so I’m sure they won’t choose ones that don’t correlate with the previous ones but as an actor do you have a way of remembering what exactly it was that you did to try keep it as similar as possible?

      I guess that's when directors come in to tell you what's ok and what's not. What each character do is a choice that is choreographed in a way. And of course, if you've done your homework and all the acting workshop, then you'll know what to do. I don't have experience in filming a show btw, but I did study performance arts a bit so that's my two cents.

      I don't about Thai productions, but in the U.S. there's a person called a script supervisor and continuity is their job. They note down all of the wardrobe, makeup, blocking, actions, etc. So one scene can flow into the next. And their notes also help the editor to connect things in the editing room.

      @@karakask5488 I see, that’s really interesting! Thank you for letting me know! 💕I get the bigger stuff being choreographed but I was wondering about like small things like say, for example, the actor moved their hand in a certain way and then have to make sure they move it that way again for the next shot. I have pretty much no experience at all minus one short film that my friends and I did for their film festival entry, and then we had people doing several jobs to keep things small scale. Even then, our MUA did most of the continuation noting but still I noticed once or twice one of us was turning our head in a different direction in the long shot as opposed to the close up or something small to that effect. I couldn’t imagine how difficult it must be for a full series or movie... 😅 But I hope to find out one day.

      @@chantellelabuschagne4249 That sounds like you had fun! In productions here the script supervisor is supposed to note all of that stuff. I remember once the script supervisor had to note how long the ash on a cigarette the actor was holding was so that when they shot a different angle it would be the same. So it gets pretty detailed! But yeah the MUA and hair people also take continuity photos, as do the wardrobe people, and the set decorators. But for angles of heads and stuff, that's the script supervisor. Good luck with your performances, I'm sure I'll see you on screen one day!

    When you talked about an average of 10 takes... Honestly that made me really appreciate some of the more emotional scenes in some of the shows I've watched. Trying to bring that level of intensity 10 different times and still feel authentic has to be a pretty draining day!
    And then my thoughts switched to romantic scenes and my brain just kind of 😶. Because this means those actors had a LOT more contact that what we as the audience see. And if fight scenes require a lot of choreography, then one can only imagine how much extra prep work goes into romance scenes. Regardless of content, is there some sort of, idk "emotional aftercare" that is allowed/provided when dealing with emotionally high intensity scenes? 🤔

    • @Ocean8soul
      @Ocean8soul 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I remember seeing a short video saying that Nanon in Bad Buddy couldn't stop crying after they shot the emotional scene on the roof, he had really gotten into character and the staff gave him time to gather his own self back.
      I'm also really wondering about the psychological help actors, and esp BL actors, may get. Esp BL actors, because when shooting is over, they're still expected to act as a couple with their paired partner at events and also "off" (but filmed) for fan service...
      It must be really exhausting. I hope people don't break from all this pressure we fans put on them 😕

    • @sunnyv7745
      @sunnyv7745 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@Ocean8soul Yes I heard about Nanon's case too and it's a process called method acting where the actor becomes the character and feels the emotions as you mentioned, not sure if this is the right term but it's what I saw others commenting.
      I personally detest the fanservice cuz it just seems very unnecessary and fetishising to me. They don't need to do it at all and the leads can promote the shows through others means. Straight pairings don't need to do it so why should the gay pairings!...Us fans shouldn't be putting this pressure on them either, we can simply support them and be happy they made the show come to life. But yes your right I wonder what counselling help they get if they were need it.
      PS: Sorry I don't mean to offend you or anyone else. I am just simply very tired by our lgbt folks being used as a gimmick/ for profit etc and all the shit we have already been through. People can like BL stories and find the pairings cute but it's never okay to ship them in real life openly when it can cause more harm to the actors and also to lgbt+ persons too.

      I'm going to add my two cents as a musical theater person (community theater level)
      A handful of years ago, we did hunchback of notre dame. The original version's plot (not the happy ending from disney). Basically the entirety of the second act is one intense emotion after another, and we have to be *on* the entire time we're on stage because someone can spot you immediately if you lose interest in what's happening.
      Unlike filmed media, we run the scene off and on for maybe a month before we do performances, and closer to performance, we'll likely run the scene multiple times in a row if blocking or intent needs to change.
      Once we run an emotionally intense scene a few times, we get a break to calm down and may rehearse something less intensive before coming back. Obviously this is theater and not film, so I can't say anything for his experience.
      As for falling back into the same emotional state, it's not uncommon to see someone look emotional, then when the director stops us, deadpan, then emotional again the moment we pick back up because we work on learning what looking emotional looks like (also, if you make a sad face for long enough you'll feel sad, and doing something like that can get you to the right mood). If we're going in cold, we'll think about something to put us in the right state of mind like a song or mentally reviewing the story up to that point for our character.
      Once again, this is only what I experience doing community theater for fun, and it's likely different for someone filming, but in both cases it *is* acting so I may not be too far from the mark.

    @mcmanpa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Perth’s answers are very accurate. I’ve worked on films, tv series & ads; everything Perth described is as he says. The only exception is when he referred to three day shooting weeks; this most likely would be because the film crew are salaried, they can work anytime in their work week - it costs the same. But when film crews are freelance, producers can’t afford to have crew not working - then working weeks are 5 day weeks minimum or 6 day weeks, 12 hours minimum per day, and as he said, up to 14-16 hours, sometimes longer if there are problems on set that delay finishing. (I worked 20 hours one time on an ad in a studio; fortunately it was a one day shoot.)
