  • This week, we are hiking to the Sicilian town of the Black Madonna - Tindari! Where we endure a gruelling climb up and down an unexpected hill on the way to visit the Santuario Madonna del Tindari (Sanctuary of the Black Madonna of Tindari), a Greek Theatre and have ourselves a sweaty time roaming through its main street, the only street really, all with our staple granita, panini and Birra Messina!
🌍 Follow us through all 20 Regions of Italy!

When we were in our early 20’s, chasing our own dreams of living in Europe, we met one night at a pub in Florence...11 months later, we were married! Having been together for 4 years now, we have lived & worked on 3 different continents & even on a cruise ship!
We recently moved back to Italy to live out one of our biggest dreams - to pull off the Ultimate Italian Road Trip, traveling to all 20 regions of Italy by the end of 2022! We will be showcasing the impressive diversity all 20 regions of Italy have to offer - from the history, architecture, art, culture, food, traditions and so much more! 🇮🇹

Oh this reminds me of a trip to Enna by train. The train station was at the bottom of a long winding road up to Enna. OOOPS. Fortunately during our walk up the hilly road we got picked up by a local and driven to the top. The joys of independent travel. It's the best! Love your channel.

Your comment has helped more than you know, David. We were planning on taking the train to Enna but now we might just do it when we have our car... walking up long hills is only so fun to an extent! 😂 Your Enna trip sounds like an amazing experience though, such an awesome way to begin an adventure! I live just across the straight in Calabria.. I loved Tindari! Did you go into the Museum?, check out the town and their thermal heating systems, the history of this place is so much more than just the Greek Theatre . Only in Southern Italy do you get a ride in a police car to start you on your journey (without being arrested or a fine)

I was born in a little town 15 minutes drive along the coast east of there… moved to the US at 4 years of age in 1969 but plenty of family still in that area… reminded me on my trips home over the years… parents always forced us to spend at least one day visiting the church so they could make a donation and buy some Ciciri and hazelnut necklaces…You missed a bet not heading to the Mari Seco for a dip…one of the better beaches in the area…. Thanks for the video, really made me home sick.

I live in Rome and my husband is Sicilian. His family venerates a Black Madonna like mine does but from a different perspective. There are Black Madonnas all over Europe, 37 in France alone. The black Madonna that my Cuban family venerates is Our Lady of Regla. She is but one of many in Andalusia Spain. She came to Cuba with the Spanish and is synchronized in Cuba with the Yoruba Nigerian mother of fertility deity of the sea, Yemaya. I wish you would have got a real shot of the Madonna's actual face, you walked so far to see her and didn't really show her. Black Madonnas are reminants of the worship of the black mother figure, the goddess Isis in Rome and Greece. They are beautiful and powerful. The representation of the mother of humanity.

At one point it was over 102 for 5 days in a row lol. One day it was 105 !! I will say towards the end of the trip, there was a little stress due to the Covid uptick in Sicily and going from a white zone to orange was fun to hear. Another good note, my trip there with Alitalia might have been the best one way flight I ever had. So ironic that they are now closing shop in a few months as they finally seemed to get it right after all these years lol. I needed to change money in Rome nearby Terminis Train Station and I had so much luggage that I could not go through the thin revolving door. As a result, the carabinieri helped me with the luggage so that I can go through an employee door and do my business. Everyone was looking at me like a two head monster. Some information from a local... The path that leads from Oliveri-Tindari station to the town of Tindari is called "sentiero Coda di Volpe" (fox tail path) and you can easy find it on Maps. It's quite hard, but, as you can see, the landscape is beautiful. On the other side, there is no bus service between Tindari and Oliveri, while there are a few bus that connects Tindari to Patti: the town of Tindari in fact is part of the municipality of Patti.

In our way from Giardini-Naxos to Cefalú we decided it was a good idea to visit Tindari and have lunch there, we were with a rental car so reaching it was easy, the problem was that there was a service at the church, I think it was a wedding with full mass, so we couldn't see the Black Madonna, we did the same walk to the end of town, got lunch but the service was still going, so after talking some picture of the views we continue on our way to Cefalú!
