From Mount Etna to Palermo: Exploring Sicily, Italy - Mediterranean journey | DW Documentary

- As she travels the Mediterranean, journalist Sineb El Masrar visits Sicily, Italy’s largest island. She meets citrus farmers and puppeteers, and journeys from active volcano Mount Etna to the regional capital, Palermo, a hub for marine rescue efforts.
Sicily produces some 1.5 million tons of citrus fruit annually. Near Catania, Sineb helps organic farmer Manfredi Grinaudi with the winter harvest. She also meets Enrica Arena, whose company "Orange Fiber" makes clothing from citrus peel.
Sicily has a dramatic history, and nobody tells it better than the "Fratelli Napoli", a long-established family of puppeteers from Catania. In the "Piccolo Teatro", Sineb learns all about this famous performance tradition.
Sicilians have a special bond with "Mama Etna," as they affectionately call Europe’s highest active volcano. Sineb accompanies volcanologist Giuseppe Salerno up the peak to a chilly 3,000 meters above sea level. Then it's back to the milder temperatures of the Mediterranean: Palermo is Sicily’s capital, and has a population of almost 700,000. It was long considered a stronghold of the Sicilian mafia, until residents fought back. Sineb meets Chiara Utro from the anti-mafia movement "Addiopizzo", as well as Palermo Mayor Leoluca Orlando, who helps people rescuing refugees at sea. Finally, Sineb visits Modica, where she tastes the exquisite products of a local chocolate manufacturer. That’s enough to tempt her colleague Jaafar Abdul Karim to join her, and the two compare notes on their Mediterranean journeys.

Italy is so special! Full of art, history and natural beauty!
I really enjoyed my time in Sicily. The food is so fresh and bursting with flavor probably because of the volcanic soil. You forget what farm fresh food tastes like as we are all used to shopping at grocery stores. Also the architecture on the island is fascinating, with many different time periods on display, sometimes mixed together in the same building. And any WWII buffs will appreciate visiting sites where battles took place as Sicily was a strategic milestone in the war.

I love the Mediterranean countries! I have been to Italy 6 time's but I mostly spend time in Napoli, Pompeii, Capri, Rome, Florence, Torino, Milano and 4times to Venice. Next time it's be the Adriatic coast+ Sicily 😊

Here because of the Netflix series From Scratch. Though I have known Sicily for quiet a long time (just a little knowledge though), but the movie awakens a little awareness of this beautiful island.
Palermo has everything, it can rule itself. Agriculture, Mountains, treater and so much more, that's why Hightower is loved. every district, county is magnificent stable, no need to migrate anywhere, resources are equally distributed across the county.
But it also has big unemployment and criminality

I know, no one is intrested in technical issues but give it a chance: 1. az the beginning of the video the background music is so loud even the narration is supressed. Not a singular case, I have experienced it in other dw docus. 2. Later on, when ones talk in a typical interview situation the ambient sound is as much loud as the human voice therefore it is challenging sometimes to grip the point of the interviewee.

Sicily is the secret gem of Italy that we still didn't realise its potential. In the past,. Muslims and Christians lived here together in harmony. I can see it in the near future as the Arab migration is increasing rapidly. I think that illegal immigrants is destroying the country's economic. But more legal immigrants and giving the chance of illegal immigrants to stay in the southern Italy can really make a positive difference for the both parties. Integrating in an Italian society is very easy and fast. As my parents are Bangladeshi immigrants, I always felt that I am an Italian. (I didn't knew about Bangladesh that much)
You can say I was a full Italian. Also, love Italy very much- because I never felt any islamophobia here. Italians are real people. From heart
As a Sicilian with an interest in History, I can assure you that muslims and christians didn't live in harmony. The muslims tried to submit and destroy christianity many times in Sicily, and when the christians conquered again the island, after a brief period of peace, they expelled (or worse) the remaining muslims. The idea that these to religions lived here in harmony is a common mistake, I have to say
@@esti-od1mz I didn't know this fact. But I heard when the nomads controlled Sicily, both religion lived together. Also in that time Sicilian architects were on the peak. Just think if the Muslims stayed another 1-2 century. I see a mind blowing city with mosques and church scattering together.
Yes, the ruler didn't let this both groups to live in peace. But it is true that in that time, all people lived in concord.

@@MainulWasTaken to be fair, churches were not allowed during the muslim period. The muslims took over the churches and made them mosques, and the christians had to attend mass in segret. Unfortunately, no muslim architecture remain in Sicily, since the architecture we call arabonormand actually was ddveloped during the norman rule. I would not say that the islamic era was a "golden age" for Sicily, since it was after all a foreign rule. The kingdom of Sicily, which developed later, was really the golden age for Sicily

Most people think that Mount Etna dominates the whole island. But Sicily is so large, Etna has no impact on the western part of Sicily. From Palermo to Mount Etna is a distance almost 300km

I wonder how Sicilians feel about the way their Island was presented by the two journalists of DW. The Sicily I visited many years ago was enchanting. The one I saw in the documentary is uninteresting. The journalists spoke about the democratization taking place in the South, yet they ignore that this is an island with deep democratic roots from the antiquity. In my opinion they did not do the island justice, they presented a gray soup.
Rather underdeveloped, therefore interesting for travelers.
Other thing is to live there 😱

The mayor of Palermo is almost impossible to understand, because he doesn't speak proper English. So DW, you should put sub-texts under those, who are interviewed, to ensure they're being understood.
That goes for the entire documentary - Instead of having annoying narrators speak over those who are interviewed.

The female narrator explaining the blood orange is the relaxing part of DW travel documentary. Whenever I hear her voice, I knew it will be an interesting journey. It's hard to understand the mayor, I still got what he meant by playing back with "CC' for the most part, listening to the Italian dialogue reminds me of my holidays in other parts of Italy

Re over dubbing. The producer has to make up their mind whether to have the local spoken language with English subtitles or simply over-dubbed in English but not someone speaking in the local language and someone else speaking English at the same time.

Italy has a constitution, a president, judiciary system separated by the political system, two separated chamber of government (Senate and Chamber of Ministers) and 2 different police forces created just to avoid any authoritarian shift.
Everything has been split in 2 and no branch can rule without the other, so it is impossible for Italy to become a fascist regime , although it is also impossible to rule without almost 70% of agreement between everyone, which is why italy has so many government every year
