In this video I explore Sicily, Italy. I visit towns in the South East region of Sicily, including Catania, Noto, Syracuse and Ortigia. Sicily is a fascinating island in the South of Italy, with a rich mix of culture, history, food and the friendliest locals in Italy! I explore the bustling fish market in Catania, as well as try some popular Catanese dishes like pasta alla norma and eggplant caponata, I also feel adventurous enough to try the Catania specialty, horse meat burgers! I then visit the beautiful region of Noto and do some wine tasting of the famous nero d'avola red wine at a beautiful vineyard. Noto is a beautiful town known for it's sandstone cathedrals. I also visit the seaside town of Syracuse and Ortigia which have some incredible ancient Greek sites like the archeological park of Syracuse.

300 years of arabs doesnt make sicily arab. The greeks were in sicily and south italy from antiquity till 1400 ad aka the middle ages. They are propably greeks not arabs. South italians cluster with greeks in dna tests not with arabs.

Grew up in Corinth in Greece, it makes me very eager to see where my predecessors build their colony 2800 years ago. Love the country, but there is definitely a greater connection with Sicily. Quite enjoy your programs Angelica.
I love how she mixes different languages (portuguese, spanish, with italian) and still gets to have a small conversation, I did the same while in Italy because I don't speak Italian well enough 😊
That's how you travel: Just show you are interested and willing to do an effort to understand the other party. Apart from one or two individuals, I've had nothing but smiles and friendly people, be it in Italy, the UK, Tunesia, Iran...

@@LUIS-ox1bvThat’s true but remember she is in Sicily and Sicilian is very different than standard Italian. So when natives speak Sicilian instead of Italian it will be much more difficult to understand. Luckily Sicilians also speak standard Italian, and having a local translator was definitely a plus.

I remembered my school days back in London . I used to lodge with an Italian family originally from Napoli . She used to cook a lot of pasta , all kinds and they had their home made wine. I was like a member of the family. They were such nice people. Thank God.

One thing I recognize in Sicily is the fact that we have integrated the culture of everyone who invaded us, we are very evolved in that sense, we get used to impossible things very rapidly when we have to, unfortunately we are not evolved in keeping our treasures clean and in pristine conditions.

another magnificent work, Malini, demonstrate your passion and the great italian cultural richness that is the heritage of the immense Italian history...think, what is the difference between a walk in the elegant and rich center of Turin or Milan, to the passionate and rustic Sicilian warm reality like in the fish markets, Italy is truly generous and those who have the sensitivity to discover what there is beyond pizza and the main tourist sites can truly reveal an incredible cultural treasure, for example the detail of eating meat with your hands, very different vibes from what you normally think of Italy, more like indian or arabic.
Indian is NOT the same as Arabs. Arabs have olive skin colors and white pale skin colors with many hair colors and eye colors. Real Arabs especially Northern Middle Eastern Levantine Arabs are Semitic Caucasians. Anyone look like an Indian are NOT Arabs but Indians living in Arab countries.

My family is from castellammare del golfo in trapani. That culture was brought to Brooklyn NY as many of many of my family members migrated to the U.S. I have very fond memories of my grandparents and I look forward to completing my Italian dual citizenship by the end of this year. Rural Brazil looks like Portugal, but some urban areas from Brazil looks like Siciliy. Brazil's mentality is also more similar to that of Italy than Portugal.

True, I'm Italian and have been to San Diego... real cool, nice mixed American and Latin vibes, really enjoyable 👍
San Diego weather is a bit cool and mild in the summer to be typical Mediterranean weather. I think inland California is more typical of what Mediterranean weather is. Think Central Valley CA, Paso Robles, inland Ventura County, northern Napa Valley, even Temecula. Typical weather in those areas is near or above 100 degree hot and dry summer days while somewhat cooling off in the evenings to 60's and low 70's. No snow in the winter but can definitely get near or below freezing overnight on the coldest winter days but usually warming up in the 50s and perhaps 60s during the day. After traveling to southern Spain, Italy, and the south of France, both in winter and summer that's what Mediterranean weather is.

I am Arab and calling Sicilian culture closer to Arab than Italian is over exaggeration... maybe Sicily has 5% more similarity with Arabs compared to Italians.. But Sicilian culture is still VERY Italian.

Mixed culture is not a bad word, you will not find a pure culture or race in the world, peoples and cultures merged with each other and created a unique local culture, so also Sicily was passed through by different peoples and each people left their mark

Horse meat is fabulous, very tasty and lean, has tons of iron and that's why it's very red when raw in respect of beef of veal.
Here in Italy all supermarkets have a horse meat section in the meats department, also because it's very indicated for kids because of the leanness and the high iron and vitamins content.
At one time horse meat was widely eaten in Europe. Only Americans are squeamish about these matters.

Of course the British and the Irish don’t eat horse meat either and they never have. Very strong cultural aversion to eating horse meat among many Europeans.

I loved traveling through Sicily, back in 2016, Catania was beautiful. My Great Grandfather was from Sicily and seeing where he came from was a great experience. I wish I could bring my Grandmother back to Sicily to see where her father came from.

Also, I believe the influence of Arabs is played a bit too much since it’s “exotic”.
I would say Roman, Greek and Spanish influences are much more relevant.

Esempi: 'u cùscusu (piatto tipico maghrebino e siciliano, ma un particolare trapanese e palermitano), le maioliche siciliane (tipico piastrellamento maghrebino e siciliano), 'u cantu ri carretteri (canto tipico arabo e che adottiamo anche noi, e che è arrivato pure fino a Napoli con il Regno delle Due Sicilie e che ad oggi è utilizzato nel neomelodico), il tipico addobbo dei cavalli dei carretteri e che anch'esso tipico maghrebino, i babbaluci cu sucu (le lumache/chiocciole al sugo e che vengono chiamate così per via della forma, cioè simile alle scarpe arabe, le "babush"), la cassata (termine che deriva da "qas'at", cioè bacinella in arabo e che non sarebbe altro che la forma per fare il dolce), le arancine (i berberi appallottolano il riso con la carne di agnello, e le arancine derivano da questa usanza), il taratatà (festività della Sicilia occidentale, particolarmente sentita ad Agrigento, nella quale si vestono abiti tipicamente arabi con scimitarre annesse), 'u zubbibbu (vino risalente sin dal periodo arabo e che prende il nome da "zabib", cioè uvetta in arabo), 'a giuggiulena che noi mettiamo ovunque (molto usata anche nel Maghreb e derivante dal termine tunsi "juljulan"), la pasta di mandorle che è di derivazione araba, i nominativi delle vie nel centro di Palermo in arabo ed ebreo, oltre che in italiano (non in greco o spagnolo), etc; etc.
Potrei stare qui un giorno intero ad elencarti le cose di origine araba che fanno parte della cultura siciliana.
E poi sarei io quello che non conosce la nostra cultura... cettu, cettu!
@@ianmarchese402 ci sono molti elementi della cultura araba che rimangono ancora oggi. A parte che la tua divisione non ha senso, perché nel momento in cui sono arrivati gli arabi la Sicilia era unita e in mano romana da quasi 1000 anni. E dopo gli arabi è stata unita per altri 1000.
Per quanto ci siano diverse parole e elementi culturali arabi che risuonano ancora oggi, i rituali religiosi sono quasi tutti di ispirazione cattolica spagnola. Le nostre leggi, la nostra letteratura e la nostra lingua vengono da Roma e dalla Grecia. I nostri monumenti sono principalmente Greci, Romani, borbonici.
Mi sembrano elementi un attimino più importanti dei babbaluci e degli arancini, abbi pazienza.
Non voglio assolutamente sminuire l’importanza della cultura araba che ha arricchito la nostra cultura, ma dire che la Sicilia occidentale sia un’area di cultura magrebina è semplicemente una minchiata

My grandmother's mother and father were from Sicily. I have never been there and was excited to see this clip pop up and started watching. I have no idea why I got so emotional. I cried through most of this video feeling utterly displaced. One day maybe I too can visit.

Correct. Let's see. PM Giorgia Meloni is Sicilian( we know she's born in Rome), President Sergio Mattarella is Sicilian, Ignazio La Russa President of the Italian Senate is Sicilian. So the Top 3 politicians in all of Italy are Sicilian. Tell them they aren't Italians. Haha. From there you can go on and on to other countless Sicilians. I am Sicilian and I understand what is meant by this video, and I love the history of Sicily, which is what makes it such a great place. But it isn't literally meant to not be Italy at all. That would be totally false and unsupportable in any factual sense.

Sicily is a unique and wonderful region, just like all the others, but despite everything, all of them are Italy. Even if each region has its own characteristics and traditions, there is a very strong base and cultural/identity bond common to all of Italy that holds the regions all together.
