FANTASTIC video series. It gave me the inspiration and confidence to rebuild my TJs ax15 successfully. I made a few mistakes but was able to figure them out and correct them and now my TJ runs like new with a new clutch and rebuild tranny. THANK YOU!
I have a 97 TJ with this transmission, and I'm experiencing the same problems you're describing. I'm finding your video very educational! Thanks for posting!!!
@TheKeyboardKowboy yea you got it, i find myself explaining that often. one of the reasons i took the time to explain it in the vid i made on how a manual trans works, thanks for the compliment
@montanasoftware awesome thanks for the compliment, part 4 will be up shorty all parts are here. it kinda got put on the back burner. things got hectic the last couple weeks i have some footage just need to take the time and edit, 3 collision jobs feel on my plate one was my wife's car, so this weekend i will be slinging some paint, then i can get back on track i apologize for the delay
@robinsonsauto -- Wow ... you are multi-talented. I'm going to try painting my jeep later. Sticking with the mechanical restoration first, then paint, then interior. Keeps me sane when life gets crazy. Take care, and thanks again for your efforts. You should make a bunch of DVDs and market them. I think a lot of people would buy them. Take care.
@modwickman lol yea i know that must of looked funny, i been hit with flying parts in the past, you just never know. at that point it was going to go, blow, or bend. im glad it went. lol thanks for watching
Synchronization ring (3rd) seems to be a common fairly. My transmission has been rebuilt twice because of the 3rd gear synchro ring and needs to be rebuilt again. Apparently, the gear oil has a chemical additive that attacks the brass in the synchro rings.
it takes me a while to get how the transmission works but you are certainly giving me a lot of excellent concepts about it, I assume while shifting (clutch enabled) the input shaft is out of play so the only turning part is the output shaft which would be turning at different speeds according to what gear is being applied...
This is an Awesome series! Thanks a lot for posting this. I have a '91 Jeep XJ, with an AX15 and NP231. I'm going to pull them and rebuild them both. Your video is a big, big help and confidence booster. Do you know when part 4 will be ready? Thanks!

What would cause a nosie in 3, 1, & 5?
Nosie is loud. It engages but really nosey. Great info. I have AX-5 5 spd

@klc317 thank you
just a thought why check the clearance on a gear that has pitting / scoring ? shouldn't u replace
I think it's more to see if anything else was affected from the gears that were pitted and scored.
Muy bueno saludos desde Venezuela

How heavy of a shop are you using to press the bearings off?
