Great visual instruction and step by step. Great job!! Been doing electrical for over 10 years and people don’t realize how easy most DIY is around the home. I tell everyone that I do work for that if you’re going to do your own work I HIGHLY recommend a Non-Contact Voltage Tester so you can always double and triple check that there is no electricity in your wires after you shut the breaker off. One issue is you also called your neutral wires your ground wires.
Thanks internet Dad! I too really appreciate these videos so much. My Dad died when I was 16 so there was so much about adulting that I didn't have time to learn. Never wait to learn anything from your parents!
Appreciate the videos. One note, remove black, white, green. Replace green, white, black. The black carries current. Without it, unless your circuitry involves a multi wire branch circuit, there is no current. The neutral completes the current. You don’t want to get caught in the current, so you want to close that option by connecting the whites first before connecting the current with the blacks.
I’m following you on every platform. This man is paying for his daughters brain treatments through social media. I would like if everyone would do the same.
Thank you so much for this! Watched longer videos which confused me. Watched this one and was able to replace my light just watching this video. Thanks dad!
Before working on any electrical device ALWAYS use a multimeter to check that it is not energized. Safety first. Never assume that it is de-energized just because you opened the breaker or pulled the fuse.
The order should be while connecting Connect ground(green) Connect neutral (white) Connect hot (black) And reverse for disconnect. That's what the union teaches
when splicing stranded wire (the light fixture wires) with solid copper wires (the wires in the socket) it is best to strip more insulation from the fixture wires so you can get a good tight connection with the solid wires. I like to use connectors from WAGO or similar
Thanks Dad, I burned my house down because I didn’t pre-twist the wires before putting them inside the wire nuts and didn’t know I had to tug on them to verify they were tight. I could have possibly saved the mistake if I had known I that taping each pair together with the wire nut would have kept them together. I wasn’t in my right mind though because I think that the shock I received by turning off the wrong circuit breaker and not verifying voltage before I took the wires apart with my bare hands. Welcome to the internet Pops!
I'm pretty sure this comment is sarcasm but I'll say this anyway. If you read the manufacturers instructions for wire nuts almost all of them say just to twist with the wire nut not to pretwist I mean I'll still pretwist but the manufacturers state that you don't have to for it to be a proper connection. Tug test is recommended too but have you also made sure you stripped enough of the conductor but not too much as to be outside of the wire nut. On the topic of testing after deenergizing its only 120 which can kill you but is unlikely unless you have a bad heart and that's assuming you get shocked in a way that current hits your heart. I only check because I hate being shocked not because I feel life or death situation on 120 volt 240 volt is getting up there and anything past that like 277 or 480 volt I live dead live test boi because I ain't tryna meet God ok. Thanks for listening to my Ted talk I am the lowley electrican browsing TH-cam at 2 in the morning.
Honestly, a lot of times those junction boxes have multiple circuits in them, specially in apartments. You’re better off killing all the circuits just to be safe. Grab a flashlight if you need it and a buddy to hold it.
No no no. Yes breaker is off but do you know 100%? Disconnect hot wire first and connect last. You never want to have loose your neutral/return path...
Never use the wire nut to make the connection. Always wrap the stranded wire around the solid wire first, THEN use the wire nut. :( Do it yourselfers scare the crap out of me.
If you had left the old incandescent fixture in place, when the LED failed, all you would have to do is screw out the old lamp and screw in the new one. Done!
Wire nuts are fine although I pretwist the conductors and part of the insulated part as well so I know it's a good tight connection. Also after twisting cut a 45° angle helps the conductor get all the way in the nut. Just how I was taught tho.
Yeah don't do it that way. Do not trust those wire Nuts to make a good connection you're supposed to use lineman pliers you also scred up the ground cable you're supposed to face the wire braiding the same way the screw turns so you don't have that splaying
Incorrect the white wire is not a neutral, the white wire on a 120vac circuit is a grounded conductor you only have neutral conductor a four wire circuit, thats how electrician knows if you understand what system you're working with.
First you should test with a proximity tester ( $15-20 at Home Depot) Second the black wire should come off first but goes together last in case someone flips the breaker on. Third, three complete twists with side cutters before installing the wire nuts. Fourth, Wagos suck.
Is it very important to reconnect the wires in that specific order? Like what happens if I do it randomly? I am a girl, idk anything about electric stuff. I do know to go turn off the breakers before doing any work. Can someone explain pls, genuinely wanting to learn this, to change out my fixtures.
You can get zapped. Despite turning everything to off electricity is weird, sometimes there's a connection that shouldn't be there. Even if everything is off treat it like it's on. Wear rubber soled shoes, use insulated tools. Seriously, you do not want to get zapped.
Apparently that over priced led fixture didn't actually last 50,000 hours. So, you replace it with another piece of crap. Remember the 89 cent 75 watt incandescent light bulb? Now you will throw it in the garbage so it can go to a landfill. How green. If you are FORCED to use led, use an incandescent fixture and put led bulbs in it.
Wen installing, ..always the neutral first....the hot is always, always the last wire to connect....this guy is a PERSON you should not take electrical advice from
Always disconnect hot first and connect hot last. If your not a qualified electrician don’t make diy videos to teach bad Habbits. Always use voltage meter in addition to turning off breaker
I ain’t have no dad so these videos teach me so much and I respect this man for making them 🙏
I love that you said that because what I was going to say felt like it woulda came out creepy 😂😂
Straight and to the point!!
No nonsense, informative , easy to follow. Thank you.

Me too! He's a wonderful man. Continued prayers for his daughter 🙏❤
My dad passed two weeks after my 18th birthday, these videos remind me a lot of him, thank you
💙 my dad died in 2019 This warms my heart to watch. Thank you 💙
Thanks Dad. I really appreciate this entire channel. I’m remodeling my bedroom and stumbled upon this video.
I NEEDED this !!
Thanks Dad!!
This man is doing a good job some people never learned basic things like this👍🏼👍🏼
Why did I not choose to learn how to do electrical work! Seems so handy now that I’m 25! Thanks for the tips, Pops !
Take some night classes at a vocational school you're young just don't over step the knowledge you have.
Now an almost seemingly impossible task seems totally possible thank you good sir.
Thank you so much for this! Watched longer videos which confused me. Watched this one and was able to replace my light just watching this video. Thanks dad!

I always do this , grea tip
I shut the main breaker off and discovered that the stove didn't shut off, now what??
@@wiesbadengera1call an electrician
Us electricians use a little stick instead of pulling out the multimeter everytime
So much love to you!!! You are fantastic!

That's what the union teaches
Insidewireman for 44years you are correct
Yoooo nice flex with the brown handles in that panel sir. Electricians should know what I mean.

Thank you. This is the first video I should have watched🎉
You should have connected hot wires last else even the neutral will be energized.
Though you have shut off breaks, but it's a safe practice
From a electrician its always best even breaker is off disconnect power neuteral ground and reconnect in reverse order
Thanks Dad, I burned my house down because I didn’t pre-twist the wires before putting them inside the wire nuts and didn’t know I had to tug on them to verify they were tight.

@@jsb7546you're a very helpful lowly electrician! I'm promoting you to high level helpful electrician 👑👏👏👏😅
Exactly what i was looking for. Thank you!!
My grandpa and dad showed me this stuff when I was a young lad, so glad it’s helped become a better man working on my own house now
Nice video
Thanks Bo! Another quality instructional!
Thanks Pops😊
Wow looks easy enough!! Thanks dad!!
Thank you sir. God bless you!
Honestly, a lot of times those junction boxes have multiple circuits in them, specially in apartments. You’re better off killing all the circuits just to be safe. Grab a flashlight if you need it and a buddy to hold it.
Re-splicing should go,ground, neutral, then hot wire.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, blessing
Perfect video! THANK YOU! 🙌🏽
Just a suggestion I recommend that you should pre twist the wires so they make a more safe and solid connection 🙂
This was very helpful, thank you
good sir!!!!!
Thank you so much!
That's great!
Ground
Neutral
Hot
In that order
Thank you!!❤
Thanks Dad doing this Saturday
Great video!!!
Your the coolest✌🏾
Thanks
Thanks Dad!!
Thank you. My ceiling also has a red wire but my light fixture only has two black wires and copper. What do I connect red with?
Thanks dad ❤
Thanks Dad!

Love you, Dad
Remember in the the NEC you have the ungrounded conductor ..grounded conductor and grounding conductor
My ground was connected but not wrapped around the screw. My light is flickering and eventually when out.
If you had left the old incandescent fixture in place, when the LED failed, all you would have to do is screw out the old lamp and screw in the new one. Done!
I'm teaching my kids how to use Wagos
DO NOT overlap the ground under the screw. Will lead to breakage.
Hmm you should improve the wiring by ditching the existing wire nuts and using Wago connectors instead.
Wire nuts are fine although I pretwist the conductors and part of the insulated part as well so I know it's a good tight connection. Also after twisting cut a 45° angle helps the conductor get all the way in the nut. Just how I was taught tho.

I thought those leds lasted for ever….
Those lights are killing your eyes!
Chinese garbage. mine only lasted 15 months before crapping out.
p.s. am Chinese
❤
What do you do when the wires coming out the ceiling are so old you can't tell which color they are?
Thanks apa !!
😮😮😮🔥🔥💯💯
This would be condemned in the UK. But then again, we do have the most stringent safety rules of ANY country.
Why so may I ask. What he didn't use wagos is that it.
I am curious why you should attach the hot before the neutral.
thank you very much helpful
How come i have two brown wires on my Chandler no black and green?
THANKS DAD
Also note: the green wire is a grounding conductor, handyman
Yeah don't do it that way. Do not trust those wire Nuts to make a good connection you're supposed to use lineman pliers you also scred up the ground cable you're supposed to face the wire braiding the same way the screw turns so you don't have that splaying

Should have replaced it with a ceiling fan.
So we can just turn off any breaker?
Sad is why does this have to be replaced? I thought these were gonna last the rest of our lives.
Do a take two! You called the white wires the ground wires when talking at the end! Not everyone is going to know
Thank you
Can I work on it without shutting power but switch is off
2 neutrals together.😮
The last electrician was not kind and left short wires
Thanks dad, I appreciate

Electrical work is a hobby
Why didn't you just turn off the switch? Why didn't you use lineman to set the wires?????
God help you if you had to work on a high wye 480/277 with phase rotation
Did he say ground twice he did the green is the ground then he did the black as the hot then he did the white and called ground. Totally confusing.
So you took off the light, then put the same one up. As a electrician this means you are now fully qualified
If you read the description he says he's replacing it with the same kind of fixture.
I owe you $5
Easier to change a light bulb.
Uh no white then black even if the power is off
So ground
Neutral
Line/hot
horrible outdated electric, srupid wire nuts, unisolated earth wire, oh man that would be completely illegal in Germany.
Apparently that over priced led fixture didn't actually last 50,000 hours. So, you replace it with another piece of crap.

2nd, white neutrals
3rd black, hot
Do not do hot before neutral.
Thank you❤
