@@cavemanjoe79 Agreed, The Thing, Escape from NY, Soldier, Unlawful Entry, Breakdown, Tango & Cash, Big Trouble in Little China, Executive Decision, Tombstone, Stargate, Backdraft, Dark Blue all great movies.
The funniest thing about this movie is that if you divide Kurt Russel's fee by the number of words he spoke, turns out he got paid about 150 thousand dollars per word.
This movie came on in the late '90s as I'm chilling out in my condo apartment and I watched it and really damn enjoyed it. It was not heavy on the great special effects, they were not awesome. They were perfectly serviceable that made me focus more on the actors and the intentions of the story and I was completely entranced by it then and now. It's one of the best medium budget movies of all time that and starship troopers are in my top five sci-fi movies ever. Just because the public was distracted at other times with other larger movies which had a bigger bang takes nothing away from the artistic merit of this movie.
Thanks for the retrospective! It's really a shame this film failed. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit--not enough to see it in the theater, but a good rental.
@@noheroespublishing1907 Kind of cool to think of the Nostromo's payload being titanium mined off Jupiter's 9th moon. But it's like the Mars colony idea i.e. that in reality it would suck. But I still love this sci fi universe. As a kid I remember thinking of Roy Batty being a combat model ("I've seen things..."), with humanity using super smart/strong soldiers to do amazing things in the outer reaches of space. Still cool now actually. Living in the current future with big tech spying on us is less sexy.
You should say failure in Hollywood terms is not making money when many of these films are well regarded cult classics. Like calling Event Horizon a failure. Blasphemy !
In my opinion Event Horizon wasn't disastrous. It is actually quite a good film. It didn't do well in the US. I did ok in the UK. As for Soldier it's not a bad film.
If they had done the actual script, this movie would be as highly regarded as any sci-fi classic you could name. As it stands this is a concrete solid sci-fi flick. Today with the reality of shared universes, it could have made the world of "Blade Runner" profitable.
Soldier is a bizarre case, it wasn't a bad film. I can't quite put my finger on what made it fail, maybe because it was a little niche and didn't appeal to a larger audience. It was more or less a movie made for dads.
I saw this in a test screening and it seemed finished to me, but it was still what was released theatrically. Never did see the full version before they chopped off 30 minutes. As big as Kurt got in terms of build, we used say that he should have been cast as Wolverine - in those days.
Kurt Russell did a great job in the film. Escape from New York, LA, the thing, big trouble in little china and stargate showed that he could do action science fiction well.
I saw this movie in theatres, it wasn't terrible. I think it suffered thought because in Kurt Russel's best roles he has a lot of personality, in Soldier he's basically a mute robot like the terminator
I love this film. The fact its in the Alien, outland, Blade runner universe makes its even better. Not sure how it connects to Predator though? I also enjoyed Event Horizon, very atmospheric. Watch Pandorum last week, loved that too. Anything sci fi that is realistic and dark (Dead space games, Doom etc).
It connects to the Predator movie through the Alien series. Alien and Predator have been in the same universe for almost as long as the Aliens movie has existed (the first sequel, not the original); in comicbook and novel form, and then in movie format later.
There's a lot about this movie, it's production in general, and it's stars that i respect/appreciate: the passion, Kurt Russel honoring the physicality needed, and it's several potential overlaps with blade runner which i still don't fully understand but i like: replicants/blade runners possibly existing in both, and the notion that kurt russel is POSSIBLY both like HARRISON FORD POSSIBLY was as well!!! Thoughts??? 🤔😇🤗
I love this movie, yes the trash planet feel like too small but the story arc of Kurt Russell caracther is amazing. When he is outcast before leaving he turn around like he is about to say something and cover his face with the scarf that moment is really powerful
It's funny how all these box office failures which appealed to men more than women, like Soldier, The Thirteenth Warrior, and Waterworld, have become cult favorites that get rewatched over and over, year after year, by their chiefly male fanbase.
Kurt Russell is such a great actor and he brings so much to the movie. Sad it bombed and made him look like bad overpayed actor who lacks commercial appeal, when his actor performance was flawless and he truly wanted the movie to suceed.
This movie was ok, but looked and felt low budget. And the writing and story isn’t good or thought provoking enough to outweigh the meh special effects.
I knew of the Bladerunner connection, which led to the Alien franchise and Predator franchise. His 'fake' 201 file suggests Snake P and The Thing are in the same universe. But it wasn't until l reread the file that I noticed "laser bolo." Laser Bolo? Laser Bolos were used by the Borellian Nomen in the original Battlestar Galactica series. Go figure.
Shut up. Nobody cares what you like. I always tell about financial results, bcs who cares if you liked or hated this movie. $60 mil. budget vs $26 mil. box office - this is terrible result.
It shouldn't have failed, it is a great movie!
"Soldiers deserve Soldiers, Sir". This was actually a very good movie in my view, a personal classic.
Absolutely, would like to see that too! Soldiers!
This was a good movie.
I really liked the movie to be honest. Good action flick.
So crazy to think Kurt Russell was considered a Hollywood bomb. The guy is a legend
Yeah, I agree. He was in alot of good movies:
Escape from New York
The Thing
Big Trouble in Little China
Tombstone
Tango and Cash
Overboard
I enjoyed every movie I’ve seen him in, so as I get older the only reason some of his movies have bombed is lack of marketing.
@@cavemanjoe79 Agreed, The Thing, Escape from NY, Soldier, Unlawful Entry, Breakdown, Tango & Cash, Big Trouble in Little China, Executive Decision, Tombstone, Stargate, Backdraft, Dark Blue all great movies.
Soldier was a great movie
I love Soldier. one of two good movies that paul w.s. anderson has ever made.
Agreed
I’d say three.
Event Horizon
Mortal Kombat
And this film.
Also Death Race with Jason Statham.
The funniest thing about this movie is that if you divide Kurt Russel's fee by the number of words he spoke, turns out he got paid about 150 thousand dollars per word.
These are one of those movies I can watch over and over again
Look at the service record at 4:51.
Cash ....
Plissken....
O'neil...
Maccready...
All names of other Kurt Russell characters.
It sucks so bad that this movie bombed. It was Amazing!
Big Trouble bombed too. It was brilliant and I saw it twice in theatres
One of my all time favorite movies.
It's one of my childhood movies. I love it. Still watch it once or twice a year.
I have fond memories of this movie.

ive always liked this movie.
Very good movie. Don't miss out on this one.
I enjoyed this film at the time, maybe I need a rewatch but it doesn't deserve the status it has.
Lost his stardom status? Let me tell you what Jack Burton would say at a time like to this!
Well, this was his highest paycheck so it was a peak of his career.
Great movie don’t know why it failed
I actually loved this movie.
I've seen it at least a dozen times, the fight choreography was terrific imho
It was a fun and interesting movie
The constantly ignored sequel to Blade Runner, that is also Kurt Russell's best performance.
Fun fact: Soldier, Blade Runner and Alien are all in the same universe.
They're supposed to be, but studio contracts say differently; Disney and Warner Brothers.
And Predator.
And maybe Outland?
@@MrAnon73 Yeah, I've heard that too.

I wish :) thank you
Soldier is one of the most underrated films of all time and one of Kurt's very best.
This film is connected to Alien, Predator,Blade Runner, and Outland( starring Sean Connery).
The musical score for this film sounds like Jerry Goldsmith and Alan Silvestri had a crossover.
You should say failure in Hollywood terms is not making money when many of these films are well regarded cult classics.

This is what I say in every video.

I watched it on opening weekend
🪖 For true soldiers, this was a masterpiece during a time of change 🌎as we all' approached the year 2000...

Fantastic movie!

Kurt Russell was underpaid . Most of his movies made lotsa money on video .
Anderson has ALWAYS claimed and will continue to claim until he kicks the bucket that his films have better, longer cuts that no one can see...
The marketing was terrible. It was actually a heartfelt Western in space, not the overblown mindless sci-fi the trailers made it out to be.
Nothing makes sense about this “history.” The movies described as stinkers are great. Maybe the studios and critics are the stinkers.

This was a great movie, IMO. Loved it.
Its unreal a studio actually gave him $20m to star in this. His character doesn't get a single line of dialogue!
Arnold didn't talk to much in Terminators too.
Fun fact: a Bollywood film also called Solider came the same year (1998) and was a blockbuster 🤨
Saw this movie a few times in the early 2000's I think. Liked it quite a bit.
Still better than every Vin Diesel movie, aside from Guardians of the Galaxy, IMO.
Good job, dude. Good luck. 👍
How much do these movies make after box office though? Rentals, purchases, airings etc?

This movie was the shit. Kurt got jacked, and Mowgli was legit menacing.
Love kurt Russell and soldier
Soldier was amazing and Blade Runner canon as far as Im concerned.
It’s funny how many movies I thought were good failed. This, Event Horizon and 3000 miles to Graceland were all enjoyable.

This movie had an influence on Halo's lore.
One big problem with this movie was its weak ass title. “Universal Soldier” would have been an awesome title but sadly that one was already taken.
It wasn't Kurt Russell's fault. The script was kind of boring
gREAT MOVIE, WATCH IT OFTEN STILL
I like Soldier. Got it on bluray when it came out. I would say Gary Busey ruined the credibility of the movie more so than Kurt.
I loved this movie.
I liked Soldier.
It was a great story and very well acted, but the "worlds" did feel very sound stagey. Similar to an old Star Trek episode or the movie Enemy Mine.
quite enjoy this flick tbh, better than the trash released nowadays
*What about the original script for the movie*
love this movie !

Bummer. I like this film a lot and made a point to get it on DVD, even if it is just "Shane" in outer space.
So this film is the inspiration for 343/Bungie's HALO series haha

I know this failed but I think this was an excellent film. This is just another Kurt Russel movie that became a hit after it dropped to video.
I also thought that was a great movie.
The narrator is good at repeating the same points several times to pad out the length of the video.
I just re-watched it again and didn't find any repeating points.
Love that movie
I enjoyed the movie
Yeah, don't get it tho. "Soldier" was a pretty solid to good Actionflick. Shame that i can't find a good blu ray release or vod anywhere.
I literally walked out of this movie. Everyone stared at me when i got up and walked out. The movie was just too GD hokie and i couldn't take it.
An amazing movie actually. I don't understand
I like Kurt Russel movies
It was stilted, and did look cheap, I agree. Still, I’d love to see the intended 2 hour cut.
I loved soldier the thing and event horizon. Come on, a spaceship returning from hell, How cool is that😎
Anderson's direction is the problem of Soldier. Even if it was mostly shot on location, Anderson's cheeseball style would've still stood out.
Not bad, just a little generic. Btw, it was released theatrically here
