In most military sci fi, super soldiers are usually genetically engineered or enhanced with cybernetics. In Soldier, they are merely raised to be living weapons from childhood. It's more chilling and realistic.
Yeah the acting from Kurt is great and touching in this, it's good to see this film through grown up eyes. The "boring" non action bits are actually quite strong and get the message across about a civilized society needing warriors but having disdain for them especially when they are seen as no longer useful in that role.
The "Blade Runner" reference comes from Soldier writer, David Webb Peoples, who wrote also co-wrote the screenplay for Blade Runner, wrote Twelve Monkeys, and received an Oscar nomination for Unforgiven. He also wrote the 1992 movie Hero, which I think deserves more respect than it gets. This screenplay was on the famous Hollywood "Black List" survey of best unproduced screenplays. I think if someone with more talent than Paul W.S. Anderson directed the film we might have learned what made that screenplay so good.
I'm a gal and I loved this movie... Would have loved to see a sequel or franchise. Though seeing how so many go to pot, maybe it's best that there was only this one movie. 😣
Remember somewhere in past reading that if I recall correctly, in the junk somewhere in the background there is a vehicle from Blade Runner? Shared universe maybe.
FYI the point of a snake pit is once the snakes fall in, which they will intentionally do at night because of the heat generated by the snakes already in there, they can not get back out. If you are living in an area where there are alot of snakes you place these around your living and common areas as a type of decoy trap. Obviously this works better in area with smaller snakes (that are more likely to be venomous) than large snakes like you see in the movies.
While it is disappointing that Todd doesn't bang the mom, but seeing the kid reach out his arms to be held by Todd at the end... That got my eyes moist. I appreciate Todd's character arc, accessing a bit of his humanity by the end. He's still a super soldier, but living among the refugees helped him give his life purpose, something to protect and defend.
Fun fact: when Todd pops out of the water and begins firing the machine gun, the film is actually being played in reverse, because the recoil force of that gun is over 500 pounds and immediately knocked him flat on his ass. You can see the water clearly splashing from him falling. Those guns have such right recoil that they are always mounted directly to helicopters or other machinery so that you can actually fire them
Mntgy ward t2000 is the odd one. Montgomery Ward was an old department store that had a huge mail order business in the 50’s-late 70’s. You could buy a house kit, among everything else. Sears and Roebuck was their competitor
Why is everyone's favorite movie The Thing? It's so overrated and has way too many plot holes. The special effects are laughable. Though, it fits this generation perfectly. 😂
We're all entitled to our opinion, it's not my favourite movie but I think it's great. It was a huge flop at the time and the film critics savaged it so don't really see how it could be considered over-rated. The practical special effects done by Rob Bottin are awesome, to say they are laughable shows a lack of understanding about movie making.

To be fair, the new versions of soldiers he's pitted against are genetically engineered.
Indoctrination is a terrifying thing
Except, the replacements in this movie, are exactly what you said.
I love the theme of man vs machine of the classic human soldiers trained from birth and the new genetically grown soldiers made to be perfect
I really love this movie
This is one of my favorite Kurt Russel movies...and I love the tie-ins to Blade Runner.
This is the ultimate popcorn -action film and even a bit touching when Todd cries but has no idea why he feels the way he does.

He never used a Phased Plasma Rifle, in 40 watt range? I'm disappointed!

I remember at the time being blown away that the same guy could write both Unforgiven and 12 Monkeys. Both timeless classics.
Apparently the new soldiers are supposed to be replicants as well.
@@almightycinder They were so supposed to be RepliCANs. Todd proved they were RepiliCANTs.
As it was, it was probably the deepest movie Paul WS Anderson made.
Another bit of trivia is his son Wyatt played the young version of himself at the beginning.
Kurt Russell/Soldier Vs. Jean Cluad van Dam/Universal Soldier. Now that would of been an Awesome Crossover movie.
would have*
5:50 Its the kid from Volcano. "Look at their faces.. they all look the same!" That kid single-handedly solved racism in the 90s.
Volcanoes kill racism. Only problem is they kill everything else too.
Kurt Russell is like Arnie, I could watch him do yard work for two hours. No words needed.
The Halo Spartan II vibes were the first thing that came to mind when i saw this movie. Of course this came before.

An amazing and unfortunately underrated movie.
The Plissken Patch and Oneil ring award, reference to escape from NY and Stargate, l never noticed before
He gets dumped on Planet Junkion.
Baa weep grah naa weep nini bong (I'm doing that from memory so don't wanna hear about spelling).
Be careful with that! It almost got Grimlock laid.
I feel like the MNTGY WARD T2000 ordinance is a callback to Terminator.
@@NarcolepticProphet i was thinking the T2000 thing had to be a Terminator reference somehow. Good minds think alike
This movie was and is awesome.
I completely forgot about this movie, good review
I loved this movie personally!
"You must think about something. What about feelings, then? You must feel something?"
"...Fear."
"Fear?"
"Fear and discipline."
"Now?"
"Always."

Soldier is a very underrated film. I dig it.

Saw it once in the theater and couldn’t wait for it to be over

I was thinking a Twilight 2000 reference, but I can't substantiate it.
I assumed something T2 related.
No matter what. I love this movie 👍👍👍
I like the fact they keep the trauma all through.......Kurt never broke Character!!!!!
Great and underrated movie. I’ve seen the Blade Runner references but never noticed the commendations and weapons list.
I watched this on satellite as a 10 year old kid. And I swear it was made just for me.
was a good movie as a kid I really enjoyed it.
Now that you mentioned them, you need to do Kurt Russell's DIsney comedies!
great review, fun to watch
those orange circus peanut candies are made from snake milk and thats probably why the trash people have the snake pit
Was thar Sean Pertwee?
Twas.
@mroctober3657 both this and Event Horizon, following in his dad's sci fi footsteps
I seriously doubt that kid would be able to muster enough strength to kill a snake with a boot on a mattress.
Anything with Gary Busey is pure gold! lol kinda like buttered sausage!
The guidon during the running scene was Kurt Russels son IRL
Funny story. The writer said that the movie takes place in the Blade Runner universe.
IIRC this film was 1998, and Escape from LA was 1997? The Laser Bolo at 3:31 could be a ref to Snake Plissken being immobilized by Cuervo Jones bolas.
I remember watching this movie and talking about this movie with friends, apparently, I do not actually remember the movie itself LMAO
No mention of this being "Shane in Space"?
The kid version of Todd holding the sign is Kurt's son Wyatt.
In Todd we trust.
He's a T2 too!? 11:32
Soldier reminds me of William Dietz' excellent Legion of the Damned novels.
The name
Is Plissken
Todd Plissken
New to the channel but absolutely fantastic i would love to see a braveheart review as specially as i am Scottish
Such an UNDERATED FILM...,
You totally missed "So captain ron chokes out vic mackey" - as that was a young michael chiklis!
Saw this in theaters. I'm the gatekeeper!
This flick is great.
3:04 There was a Montgomery Ward T2000 😅
One of Bruce Lee's best films.
Have an old dvd copy of this! Cheesy action at its best!
I like this movie :)
I got the answer wrong 😢. I thought it was Steven Seagull 😂555😜 great post 🙌🏻
IDK how I haven't ever heard of, or seen this movie. Kind of glad I haven't though🤣
I watched it on opening weekend
You made me.laugh a few times nice when u said I don't know why they have this snake pit heh cheers
I dug this movie
How are you gonna know where the snakes are unless you have a snake pit.
Paul WS Anderson's best movie!
Great movie
Undebatable
Coming from England, you always make me laugh mate 😅
@@joshoshea3194 thank you! I'm glad you can get some laughs out of these :)
Highly underrated movie and it would have been weirder and cooler if Daft Punk could have provided the soundtrack to this movie
That does sound very interesting.
This movie needed jcvd
Redeye will we get a face reveal for a xmas present?
I never fully understood this premise. even if he's like a 'new generation' he does not have all the experience he and the other originals do.
How about a TODD cooking show 😁😁😁
universal soldier = soldier 😅
YYYEEEAAAHHHBBBOOOIII!!!
hay the snakes are meat thats y
Kurt russell whooped bruce lee 😊
Unpopular opinion: the screen with his service record and all those easter eggs is more interesting and engaging than the remainder of the movie
You really shouldn't tell everyone that you eat poop. I mean it's a free world but really, you munching on turds ain't newsworthy.
Cult worthy, for sure!!!!
Didn't care for this movie too much! But it was better than Escape From LA!😮
