Jason C from the Mash and Drum channel always closes with "And remember, it's not about the whiskey, it's about the people you share it with" Such an important truth to remember!
Jason is a great dude! Passionate about many interests in life but always has a genuine kindness and thoughtfulness like Daniel. Cheers to fellow awesome humans!!!
I had a really good friend pass away from cancer yesterday. I can't remember the last time I had a drink with him😞 We are fragile. It's a good reminder!
Had to break out my bottle of Bulleit 12yr Rye when I saw this video. It opened up and got sweeter and spicier at the same time since I cracked it a few months ago. Such a great available rye! On a side note, I have a number of "special" bottles I have been saving for a "special" occasion. It's time to make special occasions with family and friends by breaking these out! It would be a tragedy to miss an opportunity to share experiences with the ones you care about by hoarding bottles and waiting for the right time. Enjoy life and cheers everyone!
After watching Neat, and seeing friends save bottles for certain occasions only to not come around, my perspective has changed to your message. The memories are more important than the bottle. People spend years making products into whiskey to be enjoyed, not collected. Open it, enjoy it, share it, create those Tuesday night memories. Tomorrow is never guaranteed.
Just watched this and your story of Freddie is so real. I am a bit of a beginner in serious whiskey I’ve watched you guys for years though. I have to say when I buy even just an expensive whiskey I don’t drink it alone I always saved it to drink with friends and family. I bought a Lagavulin 16 once and I nursed it for nearly a year bought it a christmas and finished it in a Nov whiskey bonfire with a couple of buddies. I think I had one small pour of it on my own in that year. I didn’t even open it till I could get together with a friend. In the movie, “water of life” several times it comes up that whiskey is best among friends and good conversation, this I believe. Thanks for that reminder
You made me cry today! I am periodically reminded that if I don't open my good bottles and share with my friends NOW, someone in my family will either pour it out or give it away when I'm gone. I'm hosting my whiskey-friend group for a tasting this weekend. Cheers!
"we are the fragile part of this equation, there will always be more whiskey" just made me crack open a bottle of lagavulin 16 that i've been saving (not that precious to some people, but expensive enough for me to save for a while)
I've not had the 12, but was totally underwhelmed by the standard bottle...right up until I had a glass on ice at a pub. The master distiller is bang on, in my humble opinion.
Great message, Daniel. I saved my all-time favorite single cask Westland bottle for the breakfast ahead of my son's bachelor party trip. Tomahawk steaks, corn on the cob and perfect whiskey...It was a memorable moment.
Great video! I deeply relate to this. As a new-ish whisky collector, I have a really hard time opening my rarer bottles. I always try to finish the ''lesser'' bottles and keep the better ones for ''the perfect day''. Thing is, when with friends especially, it will always be the perfect day. You are absolutely correct, there will always been more whisky.
Words of wisdom tonight brother! Thank you for this. "There's more to life than whiskey, there's more to words than rhyme. Sometimes nothin works, sometimes nothin shines..... like Hemigway's whiskey." Guy Clark
I do the same with cigars, sometimes thinking I must save the "special" one for "special" times. I try to remind myself these things are meant to be enjoyed, not stared at waiting for "later." "Just drink the whiskey." That's it right there.
My favorite rye. I also use 1 ice cube with it and I find it makes it much more of a full experience when drinking it. I really like the fragile comment because it is so true. I am at that age to where I am starting to lose friends to death and to remember we do not live forever and we should share with those we love or care about is much more important to me than it was 15yrs ago.
I just picked up my first "expensive" to me bottle of whiskey last week. This has encouraged me to share it with my dad and not be too stingy with it. I'll still keep it "hidden away" so we can enjoy it together (versus the spirits out on display that we all access independently). No one else in my family really likes whiskey like I do; my dad will drink it with me, but he's a sucker for cheap rum. Honestly, sometimes I don't think he has tastebuds. LOL I have a pretty tantalus with two crystal bottles, "Rye" and "Scotch." I keep Bulleit Rye in one; still deciding on the Scotch. I haven't really delved into the world of Scotch, yet. Don't judge, but it currently has Fireball in it. (blech) My liquor cabinet caters to many tastes.
Had the exact same realisation earlier in the year. Got many things closed labelled 'too precious'. They'll get opened soon, halfway there. You might never taste them otherwise. There will always be new 'rare' bottles.
Dad's Hat will always be my "classic rye". I recently discovered that my local chain isn't carrying it anymore. I was able to track down 3 bottles on clearance.
Awesome prospective, the people are the precious part. Like a grand celebration that cost a lot of money, but you remember the people what what they mean to you more than what was served.
Wow i myself find at times i treat whisky as to precious i collect whisky rear odd bottles and often drink the “cheaper” ones but this video just made me think back of why i started collecting and enjoying whiskies the search for those odd bottles and the moments spent with friend family and loved ones enjoying that odd out of place rear bottle thanks for the reminder and i would love to come vist you guys for a week or two all the way for South Africa keep it up hope for an invite 😅😅👊🏻
Since I saw that film my toast has been “It’s not about the whisky.” Actually the full toast is: “If you fight, may you fight for a friend; If you steal, may you steal a lover’s car; And IF you drink, remember Sammy Jankis. It’s not about the whisky. Sláinte.”
also remember that once you open the bottle, the flavor is going start to change. letting it have time to breathe is fine, but if you allow too much time the flavor isnt going to be as intended any longer.
Early on I noticed this "keep it for later" problem I've had my entire life. The feeling of wanting to save it since I may never get more, and forgetting that whiskey isn't meant to be kept. It is meant to be drunk. If I notice that feeling creeping in, I know that I absolutely need to share it with others. I know those who view my channel will appreciate such things, and I feel all the better for giving them a chance to try it. 🖖😎🥃
Daniel - what is that painting over your right shoulder? It's beautiful - my first thought is that it's the Magi & star, but I can't find it anywhere when I Google it. Help? Cheers!
Two nights ago I killed a bottle of Redbreast CS by accidentally pouring 3 oz instead of 1. I could have poured 2 back, but I decided to not treat it as irreplaceable. And yesterday I replaced it. Because I'm not an idiot.
You whiskey folk sure make me feel gutter. All these descriptors of notes and characters is just more than I can relate to. Mind you I'm a mixer. By that I mean I just drink most things with coke. I pour a drink, I take a slug and I like it or I don't. Some are really good such as Bullit and some good and occasionally some are gasoline. There's nothing centered or earthy, nothing palate filling or spreading. Is there hope for me or am I just useless. I always taste the spirit alone but just don't get it. Should I take a course? Or read a book? Help!

Love the comment on fragility. I'll have to watch that video but agree....its the people that matter. Thanks!

I had a bottle of rye i bought when my kid was in the NICU. Drank a bit when she got out but itnsat for years.
Finished it, and enjoyed it

Those are some wise words. I love Neat. It's the movie that started my journey of Whiskey exploration.
Thank you for another great conversation 🥃
This is so true! I do this all the time. 😖 Nice to have the push to actually drink some of my special bottles. 🥃👍🏼

It is never about the whisk(e)y, but about the people. Hold those you care about close. Thanks Daniel. Cheers.

Very great words of wisdom. Our whiskey is for “show” and then enjoy with friends and family.
Bulleit is one of my go-to brands. It's just reliably good for a good price.
My 98 year old Grandpa always says, “Bulleit …Jim Beam and Old Crow are good honest products”
I love their rye, and the bourbon is old reliable for me. I think bulleit is really under appreciated!

Daniel is becoming the Taylor Swift of Whisk(e)y - any conversation or interaction could be a hit for the channel! 🙂

Law's full proof rye has been one of more unique ones to me
morning you MB'S..

I don't baby my stuff I just miss it when it's gone.
Excellant video, Just found NEAT, on Amazon prime. Will watch tonite
"scotch: a golden dram" is also a great watch. Used to be Netflix but I'm sure you can find it out there.
🎉🎉🎉
very good for how cheap it is.
Been a minute. Magnificent bastards everywhere should say hello…
Daniel - what is that painting over your right shoulder? It's beautiful - my first thought is that it's the Magi & star, but I can't find it anywhere when I Google it. Help? Cheers!
Neat - the story of bourbon. It’s on Apple tv.
That's Freddie's story about his late father. Great story - I've seen Neat far too many times to count.
😁🥃🙌🏻
Can you make a video to balance this message with the conundrum of having too many open bottles?? 😆
Welcome all Whiskey Vaulters to the Story of Why you should Drink your Drink with Daniel!
I actually had to pause this video at 9:20
You do these so far ahead, how do you keep track that it will release on Tuesday?😁😁
Spreadsheets :)
@@WhiskeyVault Oh yeah I forgot about your obsession. 😉

Can we get Whiskey Vault Glencarins made?
We have them for class. I'll look into making them for sale!
I can't have good rye in the house. My wife mixes it with store-brand diet cola. I buy the standard Bulleit.
Whatever happened to the guy he used to do these reviews with?
Standard Old OverHolt is the best rye!!
Yep. Lot's of dead dudes with cabinets full of fine whiskey
Oh and BTW, one of my favorites
I can't stand their bourbon, but i like their rye, especially for the price
Their not for looking at their for drinking. Crack a seal and pour one for those that you are fond of. They might not be here forever. Cheers folks.
407👍
407?
Friends are special but I would definitely trade 2 friends for a endless free supply of octomore
How can you say you were being safe with a straight face after you say you were riding a motorcycle?
