I think at least some of the difference in taste has to do with the vapors being channeled into your nasal passages as you sip. Both the Copita and the Glencairn are funneling smells right into your nose, while the other two are allowing a lot more outside air.
😆 I'm going to use that answer. The best glass is one with just one hole preferably at the top 😁. Most of the time I personally enjoy a glencairn or a rocks glass if I want the full mad Men effect. I have one of those whiskey whisdom glasses. But I haven't decided if I like it or not. Thank you for another great conversation 🥃. And Happy Halloween 🎃
Imagine savoring whiskey from four exquisite types of glassware, each offering a unique experience, yet none could entice me to indulge in Basil Hayden. The thrill of exploring these vessels only heightens the anticipation, but still, that particular bourbon remains untouchable! Cheers 🧐
Just found your channel when doing some research on whisky and after watching a few videos I really like your style. I have been drinking whisky for many years but never had the pleasure of Glencairn glasses but have just ordered a set along with a GlenDronach 12yo and an Ardbeg 10yo. Love your work and cheers from New Zealand!
My favorite glass is a rocks glass too. It's a square shaped rocks glass that has some silly Father's day saying that I got from my daughter years ago. When I'm running the smoker out back or just chilling with a glass of good whiskey that's the glass you'll see me with.
💯 agree.. so many bars here in Melbourne Australia don't use Glen's, so I've started taking my own with me, before that I would order my Whisky neat in a champagne flute some of the looks I would get 😂😂, most Whisky bars here use a stubby kinda wine glass shape.... But Nothing Beats a Glen in my opinion.... Cheers Whisky Wizard 🥃🧙♂️🥃
I've tried three different glasses, and the Glencairn works best for me. If I were to go to the expense of trying every tasting glass I can find, I might find something that works better. But the Glencairn works so well that I can't see spending the money. Besides, IMO the Glencairn is the prettiest glass anyone's ever made. The smokiest nose I've ever come across is Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon (which, alas, they're not making anymore 😭). The next smokiest is Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof. Nothing else has really given me much if any smoke, which is unfortunate, because I like a smoky whisky.
The Glencairn is the glass of choice. BUT I’m in the absolute minority in thinking the often maligned Riedel whisky glass is excellent. No, it’s not a nosing glass and yes it’s not cheap, but the way it delivers the whiskey into your mouth provides a “fuller” tasting experience.
My first comment....EVA! My DirtBag™ group (Mountain Bike and Whiskey Tasting) ALWAYS use the same glasses. They happen to be Glencairn. Consistency from day to day tasting.
I personally have 1920's blenders glass for a first try of my new spirit and after that I resort to a nice looking tumbler, whilst having a nice cigar (Sunday "me time"🙂)
Yeah, I'm the same way. If I want to analyze a whiskey, like if it's my first time trying it, I use a Glencairn. Or if I'm just drinking scotch neat. But for just having a bourbon or rye on the rocks, or for cocktails like an old fashioned, rocks glass. In fact, two weeks ago I went to a glass-blowing class and I got to custom-make my own rocks glass. And now I can't wait to go back and make more as gifts for my friends!
@BetterAvecBourbon well of course we have the big names, jim beam, makers, ect. But all the specialties are local canadian whiskeys like spicebox or bearface. Would be cool to send them some at some point
@@lancerhades971 agreed. I’d like to see some more variety in brands: beam, knob creek, makers, bakers, bookers, basil Hayden’s all fall under Beam / Suntory
@@Rassy649I ended up Riedel glassware for this reason. I held the Viski glassware and they felt cheap. Glencairn for snifting, Riedel for everything else
Glencairn for snifting, Riedel for everything else! I’ve held Viski and they just seem too thin and light. Briefly considered Fable as an unbreakable option but they didn’t feel right in the hands!
Norlan has a great rocks glass that’s heavy with a slight tulip shape on the inside. It’s not as great as a Glencarin but better than a standard rock glass and it feels so good to hold.
There's also a blenders glass, Diageo always use them on fancy tastings. You can't use them in public without looking like a giant bell end, but they are especially good for low ABV whisky. I've settled on copita or Glencairn for whisky, tumbler/rocks glass for whiskey. There is something about a crystal tumbler that enhances bourbon and rye for me.
There might be something else going on with the crystal bell glass. I have been washing my Glencairns in the dishwasher and all of a sudden I realized the legs were looking different. What I found was that the dishwasher rinse aid had been refilled and this was likely changing the way the whiskey sheets off the glass. In my Googling search about this I ran across some wine tasting notes that confirmed the issue and went on to say the best type of glass for wine tasting is crystal as the surface (at a microscopic level) is slightly rougher than mass-produced glass and this gives more surface area for evaporation of ethanol, which can enhance the flavors.
Love your videos. Im really really wanting to see you guys do a review on Copper Fox distillery rye whiskey. They are out of Williamsburg VA. My wife n i went there on our honey moon n did their tour. Their whiskey is so so good. Please do a review on it. Im sure you will love it.

Once a month whiskey tastings at Soho House... They won't bring in any Glencairn or similar for the tastings. They argue "It's not their aesthetic" - so painful.
I would go to tastings or whiskey classes at total wine and they would just have rocks glasses. I asked if I could bring my own glasses and they said sure. So now I have an oak box that holds 8 glencairn glasses and lids.
Before I got my glencairn glasses I used a cognac tasting glass which I still have just don’t use it much anymore. On the lookout for a glencairn type glass for outside by the fire pit that’s a little more robust. I haven’t broken one. I just have that fear 😂
Oh you WILL break one. It is such a sad sound, too. Expensive. The real Glencairn glasses are crystal. I have a travel case that carries 2 that works great but waiting on a good plastic glencairn to take on the road, mountain biking (cuz, you know...) and the fire pit.
What's your thoughts on the Libbey Bourbon Trail glasses? Have been using Glencairns for quite some time but have recently found the Bourbon Trail glasses and have been liking them.
Even if you disregard all the nosing and tasting advantages of glencairns, the combination of durability, handleability, ease of storage, and cost (glasss at that quality for $8-10? Come on) make glencairns pretty unbeatable. That said, at the end of the day, if it holds liquid and has only one opening, then it's a good glass.
Great friggin video. I’m guessing g you didn’t do Norlan is because it’s a Glencairn in a rocks glass ? I bought the knockoff ones from Amazon. They’re nice but too light. Weight wise
Are you at all familiar with the Tuath glass? It's the Irish answer to the Glencairn. I've done a couple side by side comparisons with the Tuath and the Glencairn and they are a bit different, but it would be cool to have a professional point of view.

Sometimes I think you are an absolute flog (Australian for conceited) and then you go and make a video like this. Impartial, helpful and just plain good. You need to make a decision on this channel; do you want to use it to sell your marketing school or do you want to be a whisky TH-camr? If you make money from the school then all good, but you could literally be "THE" whisky TH-camr. Just do what works for you
Norlan has a stainless version of their double walled glass. And unlike the borosilicate glass version, the lip of the glass tapers and is not as rounded. Some people don't care much for the feel of the glass version's edge, I don't really have a problem with it but the stainless version is closer to the feel of a Glencairn. I remember seeing some silicone Glencairns as well but I don't have first hand experience with them.
I am primarily a scotch drinker, but I try any bourbon that mentions smoke. I have yet to find one that delivers on the smoke. I understand that US bourbon makers cannot duplicate the scotch peat smoke, but are there actually any smokey bourbons?
High West Campfire Whiskey, Westland Peated American Single Malt, Ranger Creek Texas Rimfire. Now Westland some may say is a Scotch made in the US, and Ranger Creek may not be out there any more, was Mesquite smoked. anyway there are some to look for.

A big, fat, juicy cork pop is the whiskey version of a Pavlovian bell.

The whiskey really hits different when you drink it out of a Yahtzee cup.
When it comes to whiskey, I don't discriminate. Scotch, bourbon, bandy, Irish, I like them all. It's a big party and everyone is invited.
Even Canadian?
@UsedBrain4U I did say everyone is invited. I don't drink cheap stuff, though. It has to be premium.
