Hans, thanks for your usual excellent review. If one uses powerline networking (ethernet over AC power lines), how much "dirtier" is the signal, and can it be cleaned up adequately with an audiophile switch?

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have no recent experiences using power line networking but I expect it will clearly improve the sound quality. BTW use the power line adaptor only directly plugged into the wall socked and not on an extension cord. Also try to avoid using the power line adaptor close to your stereo.

But if you use a software player like Volumio (on a streaming device), which first buffers part of the music before putting it through to a DAC, wouldn't that negate the business case for high end router all together?

To avoid all this I've put my music files on a class 10 USB stick, directly plugged into the volumio's Raspberry. And then async USB to the DAC. It works very well.

As always I like this review. Thanks for that. I am considering the Bonn switch. You mentioned better using the SMPS in stead of a LPS but Silent Angel recommends their Forester LPS. It has dual output so you can fire up your streamers at the same time with it. Have you been able to test the Bonn/Forester combo and if so do you recommend it or still prefer the stock wall warth? Thaks for your assistance.

Hans, both Silent Angel and SOTM promote rather expensive LPS's for their network switches. Yet in your review you indicated that you should use the medical grade switch mode and that LPS's supplies are not a good match for switches. Was that based on your overall experience with network switches? Did you try using a LPS with either the Bonn N8 or the SOTM switch to see if there was any improvement in performance? I should point out that I did buy the Bonn N8 based on your review. I'm using it with the Sonore opticalRendu and the opticalModule, both using LPS's. I'm just curious regarding the Bonn N8 and an upgraded power supply. As always thank you for your in depth reviews..

I saw the connection diagram at your N8 website, showing that ideally the unit shall come between the router and everything else. In my awkwardly long appartment the internet is coming in the far end of the house, where I need to keep my router >> 1floor up, 20meters cable >> into a wifi mesh unit (middle of the apptm) >> spreading wifi to the 2nd floor's wifi extender >> which is connected via cat7 AQ carbon cable into my NAD M33.
My question is, does it make sense to apply a N8 anywhere in this network and if yes, where.
Thank you very much for your response in advance,

    Hi Hans,
Forgive my ignorance but what I STILL don't understand is why you would want to put a cheap router upstream from an audiophile switch instead of connecting your server directly to the switch then to the player? In other words will the audiophile switch actually clean up the pollution generated by the non-audiophile router? FYI - I have a basic Linksys router (with iFi SMPS) in between Windows server and DigiOne Signature powered by good quality linear PSUs.

    Hallo Hans,
    XTZ Edge A2-300 versterker
    Schiit Saga+ voorversterker
    Quad Z2 luidsprekers
Bluesound Node 2i streamer met TIDAL Master abbo

Paul, the cost of YOUR equipment is irrelevant! Stop showing off! If you use a switch in your network chain, then yes, it may well improve the quality. It MAY, as it MAY with ANY equipment regardless of cost. In fact there's an argument which says that the more expensive the equipment is, ie. greater resolution, one would think, then it may be MORE of a benefit than it would be with much cheaper equipment. Your thought process is completely the opposite of what it really is.

Jonathan Barreneche That’s a great question! I evolved from Mac mini USB with the original USBRegen to ISO Regen (which brought great improvements) to adding the linear LPS1.1 to the ISO Regen (very noticeable improvement) to ISO Regen+UltraRendu (which brought a relatively modest improvement) to adding an LPS to the Ultrarendu (small improvement), to adding EtherRegen (great improvement). Never considered removing the ISO Regen - that’s an interesting suggestion though. Having the LPS on our ISO Regen worked wonders but on the EtherRegen there was little additional improvement. Therefore I was astonished that the EtherRegen brought the system to another level. The “as live” effect and instrument separation is in a ballpark that I didn’t think existed.

I think this proves several things. First RFI from routers in the home are a major source of noise and in Hans’ case probably that nearby tower also contributes noise. Second, removing RFI by upgrading internal shielding heat dissipation and other forms of noise riddance work. I have most of my components including amps and sources streamer and CD player fully treated internally. And the jump in performance is significant audible and easily worth it.
