    The "short rifle" part is because the barrel is 2 inches shorter than the one with the octagon barrel; at least that's what I was told, but I've heard it argued that it was called the short rifle because there was also a musket version with a round barrel at the time that had a 30 inch barrel and a stock that extended to the end of the barrel.

    Fun video good shooting, I have an original 1886, started life out as a 33 win, when I got it back in 1986 it had been kicked around , broken stock and shot out barrel , took me 35 years to restore it myself, but it's now a 45-70 18.5inch barrel, replaced the wood and plum browned it all, Williams peep sight.

      @LLKJ, thanks! We have lots of fun, and like to share it with others. You have done an amazing thing with your 1886! That should be quite the heirloom!

    Great vid. I’m in love with the 86 short. Been lusting after one for years.

      Oddly, I was never aware of them when they came out. Perhaps because of the small quantity made, but I found out about these later and lucked into this one new in the box.

      @@Alfalfa61 That sounds right. The prices I’ve seen reflect rarity :(

    Well, you are wearing out the orange :) Fun times with the brother! Still deciding on what configuration I want. I definitely don't need one. I'll just consider it an investment.

      Thanks for your comments USN Chief! Guns and shooting have always been a family thing for us. It is unfortunate that they are all so expensive, and ammo is a joke right now. They are a very good investment! I hope you find a good one!

    How were you holding on the target? Bottom of the black or on the orange? Nice rifle!

    Looks like a beautiful rifle. How did you like the rear Buckhorn setup? Any different rear sights you considering getting for it? Like the Providence repro of the Lyman #21 or other peep sight?

    • @Alfalfa61
      @Alfalfa61  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Soopah_SLeyh, I have always loved buckhorn sights and find them very adequate. I have never considered other sights for it. I have flip up peeps on a couple other 1885’s that work just great!

    The 26" octagon models are heavier still. They're absolutely wagon rifles, not something you want to lug around the hills any length of time. With a full tube of x9 420gr BP rounds, it outweighs my Remington No 1 Creedmoor and that's a 34" heavy barrel target rifle.

    The only lever gun I feel safe shooting beefy 45-70 ammo from is a Remington made Marlin. Before 2016 when Remington was still using JM parts there were some quality issues. But after Remington started producing Marlin lever guns using their own expertise and CNC machines all from scratch, Remington in 2016 and after are the best lever guns that have ever been made by anyone!! Their receiver chambers are the strongest.

    Does anyone know if these are still made

    • @Alfalfa61
      @Alfalfa61  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you can find them new in special runs from time to time. Most of the ones I have seen on the used market appear to be in great shape tho, so you should be able to find one when you are ready. Right now, everything is selling for a premium.

    You’ll get better data if you shoot three or five shot groups.
