That is my dream rifle right there! I'm saving right now for a Pedersoli 45-70. I didnt know there was any room for a filler in a 45-70 case. All the videos ive watched have said smokeless powder fills it up just fine. Now i have heard that you need filler in the 45-90 but there is mixed info on that. Some say yes and others say no so i dont know what to believe.

Thanks for the comment I have used filler but moving forward I am not going to. For light to mid level use a 2400 or unique. Several rifle work good for top end loads The 1886 is a great rifle. If you look I think you can find a Miroku made 1886 for about the same money as the Italian imports. Both are great quality. Thanks for watching

When i got my Pedersoli 1886 i was nervous of being put off by the recoil... I'd never fired one before, just read about them 😂
So i started with really light trapdoor loads and worked up gradually... My rifle is very accurate, but I definitely shoot it best with lighter loads. My favourite is a 405gn cast bullet at about 1100fps... still powerful enough for anything i can shoot here in UK, and amazingly accurate.
I pad my shoulder with a bit of foam under my shirt for the hotter loads 🤣🤣
I've never used a lead sled, but doesn't look like it can be helping...

That 1886 is my favorite gun of your videos. I have recently acquired a Swedish Mauser M38, we love its iron sights, just something about the low profile sights works really well. We were busting 2 liters at 162 yards. We don’t have many rifles without optics. My son loves it so much prob gonna find another one. You would love one if you don’t already have one. 6.5x55 is a great cartridge too.

The 6.5 x55 is a fine rifle for sure. I don’t have one. I have a friend that has a modern one in a ruger 77 The old surplus 6.5 are very hard to find. And pricey when you do. 1886 is a fun one. I have not got it figured out yet. But that’s part of the fun. Thanks for your support

Allowing that gun to jump like that is most of your problem. I see a flinch too. You have to pull that gun into your shoulder, lean into it and hold it!!

I really enjoy the 86 SRC as well. I have a receiver sight on mine which really helps my older eyes. I wish that I could find a shotgun style butt to replace the carbine butt however the best thing I found was to shoot it a bunch with light loads of Unique and cast bullets. 12 grains is an easy load and work up from there, Lyman has data. I actually prefer shooting my 76 SRC in .45-60 with moderate cast loads. My days of heavy .45-70 loads in a light carbine are behind me!

Thanks for the great comment. The load I am shooting is about 1500fps with a 350 gr bullet Not heavy but not light either. This feels like a personal challenge to learn how to shoot it good. I have some lighter loads with 2400 I will be shooting next. I will look into the Unique data that might something I will try. Thanks for watching

Beautiful rifle. I like your videos so don't take what I about to write as negative criticism. You really need to upgrade your benchrest equipment, technique and procedure. You will never really learn what the potential accuracy is for rifle and load with your set up. Your bench isn't much better than shooting off an ironing board. Your rest moves all over the place during recoil. The rifle was jumping off the rest, out of control. You are clearly in an uncomfortable position when behind the rifle. To get consistent results off the bench (or any other shooting position), everything needs to be as close as possible to the being same with each shot. The rifle is already moving while the bullet is in the barrel. If everything isn't the same shot to shot, the muzzle will be in a different place with every shot. Pretty hard to get accuracy under these circumstances, especially with a hard kicker like your 1886. You need a solid bench, everything tightened up on the rest that is placed correctly with a decent bag front and back, and to control the rifle before, during and after the shot. Like I said, I enjoy your videos. Our tastes in firearms seem to be similar. I have been casting for over 50 years, and swage too. Your are ahead of me in that I haven't tried powder coating yet. I will soon, using the HiTek coatings. It will be a winter project. Looking forward to your next videos.

Thanks for your comment No offense taken. I have some concrete formed up just haven't got it poured yet. When I am shooting at 100 yards I am in my horse pasture shooting through the gate. I am building my son a house right now so my time is very short. I am hoping we will be done with the house in 5 or 6 weeks. I have thought about building a table out of steel pipe and plate concreting the posts so the horses won't break it. I differently have some work to do on the shooting range. Thanks for watching

This is exactly what I was going to tell the gentleman. You will never see any kind of accuracy with the barrel flying a over the place after each shot. It was almost painful to watch.

One of the ranges that I go to has a bench where you can shoot standing up. I like to use this bench with heavy recoiling guns like my Henry 45-70. I don’t have one, so I can’t say for sure but I’ve read that those lead sleds don’t help much in the accuracy department. I think regular sandbags would do better. Like one of the other commenters said, your bench needs a serious upgrade. You can’t shoot well without a good foundation. I know you are busy helping your son build a house, but even if you could find an old cable spool somewhere and fashion that into a temporary shooting bench, I think it would work pretty well until you can build something better. I cringed every time you shot and your gun jumped out of that lead sled. At one point it hit the metal leg on the sled. I hope it didn’t ding up your rifle. I hope you don’t feel like I’m “piling on” here, but I am only trying to be helpful.

Do you have any weights on your lead sled? I just bought one last year and had a heck of a time sighting in a gun with no weights in it. I ended up putting some weights in it from a weight set and it worked better. I think most guys put at least twenty pounds of sand bags in theirs. Also your table seems to move quite a bit. I should have gotten that gun instead of my 35.

I use the Hornady Lever Evolution Bullets out of my Marlin and they shot the best out of my gun but the groups were a couple inches higher at one hundred yards. I see on the last round you just had a brick in your shooting stand don't know if you had anymore weight but I didn't have more than ten pounds in mine and it was moving all over also when I went to sight in my 7mm magnum last year

Howdy, i load a 330 grain gas check bullet with 53 grains of imr 3031. It runs aeound 1700 fps, and is plenty accurate. If i try to push plain based bullets much over 1400 fps, my accuracy gets bad.

    • @chrisevansgunshorsesranchi699
      @chrisevansgunshorsesranchi699  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I should have ordered a mold with a gas check. The 350 grain bullet will do the trick on game for sure. I hope to get back to this project soon. My next step is to powder coat the home cast bullet. Your 1700 fps load is pretty stout. I think I would be satisfied with 1400-1500 fps if the load was accurate. Thanks for the great comment. Talking about hard-recoiling guns- shooting off of the bench is the worst. Out in the field you wouldn't notice the recoil nearly as much. Cast bullets at 1500 fps could be a problem, depending on the alloy you might have leading and once leading starts the accuracy goes downhill. For serious load development you should check the bore before you start. 1500 fps seems to be about the point where you should be careful with the alloy and should probably start using gas checks. You mention 2400 powder- for cartridges of that type I like to use 4198 powder or just a bit slower than that. You can look at a powder burn rate chart and determine what powders in that burn rate range look good to you. When you get rich from your channel you could try some Buffalo Bore ammo to see how it does for accuracy but you will definitely feel the recoil from those.

Thanks for the great comments Bill. I hope the "get rich from TH-cam" happens quick haha. I hope to get back to this project soon. I need to clean the barrel and start from scratch. If I need to stay around 1300-1400 FPS with the 350 grain bullet I think that would be great on Elk or deer under 100 yards.I have had the thought of putting skinner sights on this rife. I think that would improve accuracy. My next step will be to powder coat the bullets. I think the will help will the leading. Thanks for watching

The beauty of the 45-70 as a hand loader you can load it down or up as much as you want. The lead sled I think is hurting me on this video. My next video I am going to use some sand bags. The kick is pretty stout for sure but not sharp like a 300 win mag. I have heard good things about the Henry. I really like the 45-70 I just haven't got if figured out all the way yet. I have been thinking about an old school marling and putting a low power scope on it. We hunt elk and deer in the thick timber and I think this would be a neat setup. Thanks for watching
