Still living your content Mark and very happy to see some new 1886 content. It's my favorite of all of them. My modest little collection of lever rifles mostly comprises of newer reproductions but this makes me want to start looking at some of the vintage iron. Thanks for the video!

Man I love those 86s ! That 40-82 with set triggers is nothing but amazing. You mentioned that King sight not being noted on the letter , I really feel that some things just didn't get written down. Maybe it was coffee break time , and they forgot , lol. I have a 1889 86 in 40-82 octagon 20 inch bbl std sights crescent butt that by the letter was a std rifle , but it also shows were it went from production to the warehouse, then it went back to production for a couple days , then back to the warehouse to be shipped. Everyone I've shown it to thinks it looks right to be a short rifle but there's no way to really know I guess . Regardless, its a great rifle and shoots accurately to about 75 yards. She's taken hogs and deer ... not bad for a 134 year old. Thanks for the videos and information. Always looking to the next !

It's fairly common that sights weren't mentioned in the factory records. In this case, it's unusual enough that I tend to think it would have been noted. It's also not a sight I've seen on other Winchesters of the era. It's a great sight, though.

What do you think about doing a video on a model 71. Talking about the improvements done to it, like new proof steel receiver, angled locking lugs, bolt ejector, removal of the hook, etc. Showing the differences side by side, talking about the .348 wcf and it grain offerings and comparing to its predecessor .33 wcf.
348 being a necked down 50-110 at higher pressure, and .33 being a necked down 45-70 at higher pressures designed for smokeless. Then whatever you want to talk about, I just enjoy listening to people talk about history.
Though, you could wait until you go to Cody to talk about it.

You’re right those 86’s are heavy. Decades ago Chet Fulmer had one for sale and it took me a couple of months to pay it off. In the meantime I found a guy that formed 38-56 rounds and ordered a couple of boxes from him. Well that 86 was sold by the weekend and luckily Chet had another one in the same caliber so I ordered it as well. That one sold in less than a week. Then about 2 months later the ammo showed up and I’ve never owned another 38-56

I really like the 1886 design, my one i 50/110 unfortunately has a round barrel and full length magazine , but the action is really smooth, I can see that people found it a little heavy, but in the larger calibres the extra weight is a big advantage , and compared to my 1874 Sharps it is lightweight. Many thanks for posting this one! Chris B.

Has to be pretty difficult finding .40 caliber brass for the 1886. Really wish there was an option between the modern .38-55 and .45-70, but the closest thing that I know of would be the .444 Marlin. Resizing .45-70 to .40-65 is an option I guess. Perhaps a .45-90 can be resized for cases longer than .40-65.

Ergonomically, it makes more sense to set the trigger with your right hand, but a highly skilled old-time Winchester smith once told me that the Winchester close coupled set triggers should be set from the left. Because of the geometry of the parts, they're more likely to be damaged with pressure from the right side. I should have mentioned that, but it slipped my mind. Good catch.
