  • I'm SURE you've heard so many of these interior design myths before but I'm here to DEBUNK them! Paint your walls dark, use different patterns, and mismatch your furniture! BUT! Make sure to follow some of these design principles to make them work in your home. Should I talk about more design myths in another video?!

I bravely painted the bathroom ceiling the same navy as the walls. Everyone who's seen it has been impressed. (Paired it with white subway tile and black grout.)

Having worked in (brutally tough) Hollywood for 25 years has taught me: Most haters have never created anything anyone cares about and therefore paid them a lot of money to create it. Keep doing you. Your style and POV on design is refreshing and… bonus… hilarious! Jealousy is always a bad look.

Yes, I always see the ones that complain the most are the people that have no clue how to be creative and are so afraid of peer pressure and critique, they won't dare to use color or patterns in their homes.

One thing i see on social media is a ton of people hating on people who choose a neutral color palette for their home. This drives me crazy. While I love incorporating color in my spaces, i also recognize that color isn’t for everyone. Not everyone responds to color in the same way, and not everyone is going to like what we like. One person may find a colorful space relaxing, another may find it unsettling. Now, I think there is a difference between a well done neutral space and a flat, boring all-one color space. But regardless, particularly on social media, we need to remember that we aren’t the ones living in those spaces! If that is what they like, and find soothing and relaxing, then it is what it is.

Myth: consider resale value of every change you make. I have no intention of leaving this space for at least 20 years (hopefully 40). Changes have to prioritize how my family uses the space, not what is best for resale value. So out come the barely functional closets, poorly thought out niches and greige walls, and in goes the dog beds, wall murals, and family photos. People live here, it is warm and welcoming and full of love - I will concern myself with what some other person might want in a few decades.

Since I’ve been in the business a lot longer than you, these myths were known for years. Educating the public was and is a part of the interior designer’s responsibility. You seem to be doing that, without putting too much of your own opinions into the subject matter. I applaud that.
Another myth which you forgot is that using an interior designer is going to cost the client a bundle of money. Not true! In fact, we know how to get the look for a lot less, besides where to spend the money. And of course, another myth is interior designers are going to impose their taste on the clients. Not true! In fact, the first consultation is getting to know, not only the budget, but what their wants and needs are. However, these other thoughts, maybe ,- were mentioned in another video that I missed.
Designers have been dealing with these issues for years. I do think the overall situation has gotten better, but a good reminder is always important. Well done. Carol from California

My grandmother had it done in 1950 (or earlier). The guest room I would stay in as a child had rosebuds on the ceiling. I thought it was the prettiest thing I had ever seen. The dining room had a wrap around landscape mural. It made that room so special too. Sixty years later, I can still recall both those wallpapers in detail.

I designed and help build our house, including two additions. When we moved we brought an antique claw foot bath tub with the move. The tub is in the main bathroom and the outside of the tub I painted a dark blue. We paired it with the same dark blue and cream bold strip wall paper and wainscoting. We wall papered the ceiling with an old tin style paper and painted the paper aluminum to give the room a feeling of nostalgic age. Tub also has an oval shower curtin that is suspended from the ceiling.
The rest of the brick and stone structures interior is eclectic and reflects items from our extensive world travels. I made or created the unique style that sets our home apart from the curve. We love it and the HVAC installer took the original house plan and built a house at the beach.

I think white ceilings came from professional painters. Ceilings are a pain in the butt to paint and can give you shoulder problems, so just leaving them white because they don't get dirty unles you are smoking or something is so much easier.

The first two myths really spoke to me, I did my living room in a dark green with the lightest green from the paint chip on the ceiling. And I love it, it is bright and cheerful in the daytime, and at night is dark and moody. I was told by so many that it would make the room feel small . . . well it doesn't. One reason for this is because it is an older house windows are on both outside walls so the natural light isn't polarized.
