Sorry…I picked color first but it was wallpaper and then designed around it. Boreas Midnight by Graham and Brown. Then, instead of BUYING furniture to complement the navy/gold, I reupholstered existing furniture and painted accent pieces with colors from the walls. People are shocked by how custom everything looks. Honey, it is custom and recovering stuff isn’t super hard. FYI, I didn’t completely recover the Chesterfield sofa. It’s white boucle; I just got a big piece of lavender chenille and covered the sides and back. I love it and wish people would rePURPOSE stuff instead of rePURCHASE.

What amazes me more is that most of the shops are full of furniture which already look dated and not even nice and obviously people are buying it. I believe better is to originally invest in furniture you wouldn't be ashamed in a 3-5 years, then you will never want to repurchase

“Just because you like the look of something doesn’t mean it’s right for you and your home.” AMEN! to that! I love seeing unique spaces. I love seeing a well collected space with decor from travels, antiques, thrifted. I love it when a persons home feels like a home that’s lived in and actually reflects their personality. There’s nothing more boring than a home that looks like a furniture catalogue or RH showroom. Those showrooms are stunning. I love the look of them. That doesn’t mean it right for MY home. I personally love my vintage black drip glaze Haeger pottery. I love the weird throw pillow my daughter handmade. I love the dog beds strewn about. I love the mid century sideboard I thrifted in Arkansas 15 years ago. Our homes should reflect our personal style and lifestyle.
Also! Can we stop ripping off every closet door to create an open nook? You aren’t wearing that black floppy hat and tan boots everyday. You’re not sitting on that tiny built in bench to put on your shoes. You just created less storage because you’re using what was a closet like it’s a showroom. Where are you storing the weird orange and blue dog leash and sidewalk chalk?

Excellent advice. Especially the last step of not filling the space or ending the process. I’ve never heard that from anyone before but it’s so true.
Many years ago I bought a beautiful bowl from the gone but not forgotten Moss store in NYC. It’s beautifully colored with gradient rings going from a brick red out to an ochre yellow. I bought it before I bought anything else for a new apartment and thought it was a crazy thing to do. But you know what? I ended up designing my entire apartment around that bowl and it turned out so well.
Lots of the original pieces have come and gone, but that bowl and the color scheme it launched endure to this day.

I’m starting to design my livingroom and I have a vague idea of what I want but can’t quite crystallize it. As I wandered around the room, totally lost, I listened to you. This video is spot on… I left the room with a good roadmap of how to tackle this project… I have a piece of art (fairly expensive) that I don’t really love… poof… it’s gone…same as every other thing in the room that I’m not in love with! What a relief and removing those items has allowed me to have a better vision and not trying to work around them! Thank you!!! ❤

    Dear Daddy,
When picking a color, you forgot to mention that the chips are always matte, BUT if you get that same color in high-gloss, it will look much more saturated and very different. For exterior paint I made that mistake and should have got a sample to paint like a 2'x4' board to really see the color. In the end, luckily doesn't look that bad, but wish it were a lighter shade.
#2, Great examples you pick to illustrate your points. One thing that struck me in the first example, in the way that banquet extends so far past the table. But, what a great idea! This way it is so much easier to get out of the banquet seating; you don't have to both stand and twist to get out from the banquet. If the table corner were rounded, it would be even be better. Somebody was really thinking about practicality with this decision to extend it beyond the end of the table. Technically these are inviting lines that funnel you into and out of that seating.
#3, OMG, I love you Daddy. But please Daddy, get a bigger basket/planter for that fake plant. The proportion is disconcerting, like a tiny lamp base with huge shade. It is just weird looking. Please don't hate me. 🥰
#4, As an artist myself, I do not agree that original artwork should match your color scheme. At most you could pick up some of the colors of the room, but a total match would just be banal. Art should be chosen on its individual merit only, NEVER on the degree it goes with your room. 😘
This makes as much sense as choosing plants only to match your décor. I could explain further, but I will spare you.😘
#5, You are getting to be my favorite. Thanks!

Awe thank you so much! Sadly it’s the studio I film in. I honestly hate the plant with a raging passion. I just recently ordered some custom furniture that I plan on setting up in the background so it looks better, and to also switch up how it looks back there.

Custom house build and I chose wall and millwork colors first. I have lived with a soft green wall color (very neutral) for 20+ years and absolutely could not picture living with any other color. Found a more updated version of the color and picked a complementary millwork color (tons of millwork in my house). It came out spectacular and works well with the amount of light I have coming into the house. I carry around my paint chips everywhere I go so when I find an art piece I like I see if it works with my color scheme. I am thrilled with how perfectly everything works together. Furniture and fabrics were easier to decide on that way for me and my designer. Going to take my time finding just the right art work for my house or have it commissioned. Thanks for your great videos!

I think you have fantastic advice. I once tried to ask someone I was eating with at a party about how to design a room, and she acted like that was the dumbest thing I could have ever asked and told me very condescendingly to start with a color... and I can't remember what else she told me kind of nastily, but it wasn't the fun, entertaining, and interesting conversation I had envisioned. I absolutely love your approach, and I think you have put a lot of thought into it and have some experience designing beautiful rooms. I am going to try this in my new apartment. I purchased a beautiful pot that arrived today, and I think it will be the centerpiece. It is a terra cotta pot, but it has been sculpted to kind of look like an ancient Roman sculpture, and is a bust of a lady, but it has a lot of texture and is covered with 3-dimensional butterflies. The sculpture of the bust and the butterflies are life-sized. The butterflies have also been painted.

This is very knowledge based and at some points i had to listen to you twice to get what you mean. But what you said about the order to renovate a space is so true. I rented my current home a bit more than a year ago and started with no furniture at all. I started by buying a few chesterfield chairs which I love for so many years, ignoring the scale and everything else. Afterwards, of course by mistake, I started to pick other furniture, artwork, decor items that go well with these chairs. I even moved one of them to the bedroom because of scale problems. Then I chose beddings, curtains, lightings in different rooms that also go well with my chairs (coz the chairs are of different color base as well). And up till now, I still haven’t painted the walls yet. But it’s like exactly what you said, the limitations set by the existing furniture, decor, lighting with the understanding of lights that goes into my flat, I can now easily limit and picture the color that I could use in different rooms. Given that I have zero knowledge and design sense and totally rely on youtubers and Pinterest to inspire me, your advice is the best to give me good and practical direction to work on my space.
By the way, i like the way you presented your knowledge and opinions about home design. Please make a lot more videos in the future. i really enjoy watching them.

My floor is midtone brown wood laminate which brings a lot of warmth to the apartment. This is the first place that I have lived in (I am 68 years old) that shows my personal style: eclectic, biophilic, and maximalist. I have lots of artwork that really resonates with me, plants, and collections. It makes me happy to come home! It is definitely easier to paint first. But the overall design results of doing so typically will fall short...or create MUCH more work when selecting all your furnishings since you have pigeon-holed yourself.

But that doesn't exclude what he said. First, choose you largest items, like sofa, or rugs, or dining table, etc. It usually takes some time between the order and the delivery (manufacturing/shipment,etc.) When you wait for the items to arrive, you can paint the room while it's still empty😊

Hey! Your videos are good! Here is a piece of unsolicited advice: make sure to add the subscription button and links to previous videos posted in your channel to keep audience consumption (at least the last 5-10 secs of each video). The higher your watch time the better the chances the algorithm will recommend your videos to new audiences. You are welcome :)

What do you do when your husband is a carpenter that INSISTS I pick out the paint first ie everyone knows you paint before you put down the floors, why would you go through cleaning paint off of brand new floors??
I get this but 😂 we have a budget and will need to furnish over time. Ive gone through this for the last 20 yrs.

    • @mrphoenixgrey
      @mrphoenixgrey  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It’s always been a standard to do paint first for the longest time. I get it. I would experiment with one room and not do paint first see if he will compromise and watch how the room comes together differently 🥰

Art: check second hand stores for well priced art that speaks to you. Often the art will have lovely frames. Be picky; don't buy a piece because it is a good deal unless you love it.
