Sitting back on my faux leather tan couch with my iPad perched on my beaded cushion, looking out over the grey expanse of my concrete tiles wondering where my life went wrong. I won’t be turning on my exposed bulb ikea lamp tonight. I don’t think my poor heart can take it.

Veg boy here, I agree on the faux leather with the exception of Naugahyde. It doesn’t wear the same as leather for sure, but in my experience with my vintage Eames chair it just looks great indefinitely. Not a direct solution or alternative, but worth considering over the cheap faux leather that flakes off in a matter of months.

Not long ago I would agree, even insisting that nigh all literal pieces be purged, but recently I've seen an exception. It was an apartment of an artist and she found some really unique items and made them work. Like an ornate brass frame for mirror and a very colourful fish-shaped washbasin. She incorporated those colors throughout the bathroom and it looked amazing. Stylish with a pinch of juvenile energy. It's not something all of us can pull off though XD

I couldn't agree more with exposed bulbs. Although I actually like the vintage atmosphere that an exposed bulb gives, when I looked at them at the store I realized they're really bothering for the eyes. Having a lamp that you can't look at when it's on is kind of pointless, especially when you buy it for the looks in the first place.

I agree with you on everything. I am updating my small bathroom and was looking for a new light fixture over the vanity. Very hard to find if you do not want bare bulbs or clear glass shades. I finally found one with frosted shades so you cannot see the bulb. Gray institutional walls and floors, no way. My grade school growing up was all gray. I also have to say that chair you were sitting in is a no go. Sorry lol.

I’m team down pillows everywhere, beds and couches. It’s unfortunate bc I try to reduce the harm I bring to the planet and the animals that we share it with, but after buying pillows at all price points, nothing feels more comfortable than a down pillow. I also have some neck/back problems that informs my verdict. And for me, throw pillows on couches aren’t as much about decor, but to make it more comfortable when my back is against the arm rest. Of course they have to look good too, but the function they serve is even more important.

When I was a teenager I painted ,y bedroom battleship grey, but before you have an aneurysm, please let me explain. As background info, when you were gifted something - regardless of what it was - that you used and appreciated it without question or complaint. With that in mind, I woke up one morning when I was 11 to see my Auntie had gifted me new bedroom decor. Up until then, my parents had dictated what I had, and my Auntie knew I hated the baby pink and mint green scheme that had decided upon. She also knew my favourite colour, so she bought a new bedspread, lamp, curtains, and rug in it. Amy favourite colour is red. RED!
The next time we moved, I asked the manse committee if I could paint my walls battleship grey. I knew I needed something to bring down all the red and that seemed to work. Before the grey paint, my room literally GLOWED when the rising sun shone in but the grey seemed to just take that over-the-top glow off.
I have often asked myself if there was another colour that I could have used; do you have any suggestions?

I thought that "Enchanted forest bedroom with twinkling fairy lights" (Adobe's name) at 2:05 was actually pretty cool, except for the bed platform with the dangerous corners I would be sure to gouge my legs with, and I would prefer the lights not twinkle but be dimmable to a soft glow. I am so glad you included a little rant against grey flooring and decor - you exactly echoed my sentiments that it is depressing (I also think 'desolate' when I see it). Also, kudos for calling out the fake exterior shutters that obviously are too small for the window. Going off on a side note, not a criticism (because I don't know the reason for it, hence the question) but truly mystifying... I have been watching a number of your videos and my one consistent question throughout is why are you always wearing clothes that are about 6 sizes too large? You look like you are drowning in them.

THEMED ROOMS: Do work if the city is themed. For rentals/vaca homes, specifically. Vegas, Palm Springs, Hawaii etc. Done tastefully. I agree it generally isn’t the move but sometimes (rarely) it works.
Examples: I have a vacation home in PS, no where else would I paint the front door turquoise. 😂Hawaii: The Royal Hawaiian used to be old school Hawaiian which felt themed, now it’s modern which feels disgusting and antithetical to the culture. Sometimes themed works… but almost never.
The key is being “authentic” to the local vs the kitschy version.

On the leather couch,.. just gonna add that if you’re paying $xxx for a faux leather,. And the difference to a real leather is an extra thousand or so,.. do it. You keep the leather well, it will last for the next 10 plus years and get worked in by which point when you want to change your look you have resale value which probably would be the difference of upgrading to the leather to begin with. Omg trying to find a well kept leather couch or chair right now and the resale price is impressive. No word of a lie,.. buy quality and maintain it, it will serve you well and become retro and valuable again in the next person’s life. Hint,.. I’m that kind of next person 😂. Without the money for the new but appreciating quality and wanting the look.

Because places with bad memory for me were gray - but I also hated it before. People may hate my yellow and orange and green walls and pine wood everywhere - but at least it makes a human feel happier! Can't tell me gray does this, it's depressing by nature. Also in Germany it's often dark, too. And every new house here is white and gray and with dark gray stone front yards ... Ugh!
The only flooring we could affort in the beginning of our home renovation was too gray for me, too ... 😢 But now it's there in the second floor ... I'm really sad about this, even tho it's not gray but just with a gray undertone.

The themed coastal stuff is like being hit over the head with a hammer. I get it, you live near a body of water, or worse, I don’t get it, you live nowhere near the ocean. We see this here in Hawaii with owners of cheaper short term rentals especially. There are the T.J. Maxx arrows pointing to the beach, the Ross pillows declaring that “Life is a Beach,” the metal fish or wooden turtles pinned to the walls, the ceramic shell soap dishes on bathroom counters. I guess it works if you are on vacation and need to be reminded of it 24/7 in a Disney type of way. 😂 Yes to restraint, concept and quality and unique pieces displayed in creative ways. Yes to curated collections. No to cheap, mass produced, themed junk.

I can’t have a blue bathroom because I will automatically veer off into a water theme. I was raised with sea shell wallpaper. It’s ingrained.

What about 1200x1200mm large format tile for floors that happens to be a brownish grey with some thin white veining, very expensive its called french steel xxl, theres a lighter version called lyon gris, I want to put in floor DIFFUSED led strip on the side for the hallway with these tiles, would that drag down the room? Or is ANY form of grey just a nono
Edit: im just sick and tired of boring wood floors herringbone or straight im tired of WOOD I like it to be more of an accent rather than the main show

i wish i would have known you a few years ago before i bought my lamps with exposed bulbs. i love them, but you're right, the glare is too much. The floor lamp stays off most of the time, so it still looks cool, but it isn't very functional. My table lamps, though, are on a lot, and one day about two years ago, one of our little birds went exploring and got stuck in one of them. We had to scoop her out, poor baby, but she was okay. Damn near gave the hubs and me a heart attack, though. Oy! Oh, and so i can plan for next week, will you be here, or will you still be in time-out? 😱😜

Bonded leather is just as bad, if not worse than, faux leather; it's the textile equivalent of Spam - just bits and pieces of leather scraps, pulverized and glued to a fabric backing. The stuff peels and flakes very quickly.

I have an exposed bulb lamp from IKEA. It’s meant to mimic an oil lamp. I love it cause it dims super low to create a mood or just not irritate my eyes when I have a migraine.

If people want exposed light bulbs they should just put up fairy lights because then you get that defused light, but over a large surface area, and if paired wit the right decor can probably fit whatever you want.

I gotta disagree a bit on the faux leather take. @mrphoenixgrey
We have a vegan leather couch and chair from Albany Park that are looking fantastic after 4 years. I expect them to continue to last.
I think a better counter example is the vegan leather that’s in electric vehicles. The high quality stuff doesn’t peel, at least not in my experience. And I condition the seats in my Tesla with Chem Guys leather cleaner, just like any other leather seating.
IMO, the real issue is quality of materials. I just don’t want people to think that all vegan leather is cheap and poor quality.

Tacky 'themed rooms' are like 'tacky' themed weddings, and both should be restricted to - 'What happens in las vegas..stays in Las Vegas!. And should not be attempted outer state, other than within the constraints Disneyland!.

I wish I could share a picture I saw this morning from a house for sale near me. It's a bathroom, the whole house was butt ugly but the bathroom.. OMG just hideous!!!!! The funny thing is the house is for sale about 50k higher than other houses with the same floor plan with a more neutral decor. They are so proud of their design.🤮
