    For better or worse, we in the U.S. did not have the choice of a diesel in either the Contour/Mondeo or its " replacement " the Fusion. In this market we get the Mk5 with a choice of 1.5, 1.6, or 2 liter Eco-Boost engine. Or, being a bit of a mechanical conservative, I got the 2.5 liter NON Eco-Boost engine.
    Also, no manual transmissions for the U.S. except for a very tiny number with the 1.6 Eco-Boost engine. Here's hoping I won't be referring to these great videos for help, but watching instead for the entertainment. It's so good to see videos about the Fusion/Mondeo that AREN'T aimed at the " boy racer " crowd.

    Did you ever have any issues with the oil pumps in the later 2014 Mk4s? The oil pumps and engines in those (163hp?) look identical to the ones in the Peugeot Experts you had issues with...
    I wonder what the issue was with the Experts as to why they failed...

    I used to rebuild/recondition engines like this almost daily. A reground crank a couple new rods along with new set of shells and it would live again. But theses days, unless its rare and hard to fond it's normally cheaper to replace rather than repair.

    • @tiggercat8689
      @tiggercat8689 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It appears that in these MK5 EU6 engines (MK4 EU5 seemed better?) we are seeing increased wear in the oil pump and also the camchain tensioner. Both components appear to have been re-designed vs the MK 4. Big question though in any closed loop like the internal combustion engine, is which causes the problem? - since metal particles from the oil pump added to the oil could be then causing the nylon camchain tensioner guide to wear! Probably the best preventative maintenance either way is to change the oil more frequently.

    • @guffermeister
      @guffermeister 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Start stop won't help as it the chain is going to go drop its lube during starting. With the very light weight oils its going to drain off quite quickly. I don't know if the Mk4 had the variable flow/pressure oil pump in it? Certainly the 18K mile service is way too long, although I think alan said they do the taxis every 15K? Not so much of an issue as they generally get started in the morning and run all day without having the full heating cycles all the time. Part of the problem also is the continual search for that extra 1g/km reduction for the consumption data. There has to be a point where it cannot continue. Look at the stupid amount of extra hardware in the EGR compared to the Mk4 and all the other crap. Adding more bits lowers the mean time before failure....

    Low Oil Pressure and No2 big end bearing had spun. No 1 showed clear signs of getting very very hot when it folds down the side of the rod.
    I'd say that even if you re-ground the crank and went to oversize bearings, you'd probably be over spec for them - new crank when is new engine time.

    These are a cracking engine, as is any PSA HDI unit in fairness. I’ve owned quite a few variations and could not fault them. People didn’t like the old 1.6 HDI 16v, however with proper grade oil every 10k they were bulletproof.
    Ford have made the wrong move in developing their own 2.0 EcoBlue engine, the horror stories coming out already after 4 years is frightening. It’s definitely an engine to avoid.

The car went into limp mode and they changed everything before desiding the to replace the oil pump. It was their last chance to fix the problem or else they had to change the engine.

    I always start the car first before I go anywhere, put my stuff in the boot make sure that the engine is running good, get inside and drive away.
    When I come back home I never shut the engine straight away, always take my stuff out or just get out of the car and listen to that engine before I shut it off.

    I can't believe how it's made and how long time it was driving this engine.

    You are still the best😁 one question though, I thought these engines had timing belts 🙄

    • @rwd323
      @rwd323 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They have both, the belt drives the exhaust cam and then the chain at the other end drives the inlet cam

    you would think the oil pressure light would be flashing with the low oil pressure and warn the driver of low oil pressure before severe damage was done.

    Great video Alan. So will you still recommend the mk5 as a family car? I mean if the engine does at least 200k miles with no problems I'm happy. Are the auto's crap in these mondeos?
    I love big saloon cars and won't have many options left in the future. Everyones wants a boring mini SUV. Always loved the mk5, I've been in one that was a taxi. Seems pretty quiet and refined on the move as well.
    Can't believe Ford has discontinued the Mondeo. I've heard that mazda wants to do the same with the mazda6. Same happened to the Accord a few years back in europe. The Americans still have it, lucky buggers.

    It looks to me like this engine has been severely laboured (driven in too high a gear at low engine speed - many times ).
