Well, if anything reasonably interesting turns up like a broken timing chain i try to film it for what use it may be to someone else.

Great work Alan ...Steve's Taxis lucky to have you !
You truly are Mr Mondeo! Thanks Alan and keep them coming.
The camshafts are suposed to twist as a failsafe, thats what i learned working at Peugeot... We always changed the camshafts after having these issues... :)
Brilliant Alan you are spoiling us, yes I do like seeing the damage and i love seeing the master (that's you) repairing it, have you stopped commenting because people are annoying you for advice.
One reason I love these videos is I've spent so much time and spent so many Miles in Mondeo's, over ten years, you know from personal experience how reliable they are because the vehicle's I was using had at least 100,000 miles on them some over 200,000 miles one even 300,000 miles.
Bolloxed being a technical term.... love it great video..
Very entertaining and informative, thanks, looking forward to part 2.
I'm not a mechanic, but like to listen to you rabbiting on about different problems on the 'Jackpots'! Appreciate your vids Alan.
thanks nigel
Nice spot on the camshaft! Really love these videos! Thanks for your time! 👌👍
Love the close up detail you manage to video AND your use of manual exposure on the camera! Monica always makes me smile!…Nudge nudge Wink wink!
Glad you enjoyed it! thanks alan
Oh Alan. If you didn’t go to see Monika we could if seen it start today. 😂😂. Glad to see the taxi work picking back up 👍🏻👍🏻
Nice 1 Alan nice to see Monica we have have her in more vids again
cheers steven
Morning Alan. That was a really good technical video on the mondingo 👍🏻 Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 she’ll spin up and spark into life first turn lol 😆 Have a nice Sunday relaxing ready for part two 🤣 Cheers Stevie 😎
Fingers crossed! have a great day too stevie
Fascinating stuff Alan. You don't really think about the importance of oil in a car until you see where it has to travel. 👍
Another brilliant Video Alan
Always a pleasure to see Monica, I can't believe the camera was facing towards her arse and you had got the camera underexposed 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Keep up the good work
Have a good weekend....
lol, i should have put it on auto exposure
Great work as always Alan, very informative.
Looking forward to the start up vid.
Thanks 👍andy
Love watching your vids.. the content is very informative and fun to watch.. Keep up the fantastic work you do Alan..
Nice job Alan on the Mondeo engine rebuild part 1
Good spot on the spun sprocket,i would of missed that, lot of labour for a paying customer in a workshop situation.
Hi Alan my mate had a camshaft which I think was from a Peugeot that he couldn't get to run after a camchain failure when he asked about it turned out the loabs could all move independently which he was able to verify by putting it next to another he thought it was a solid forged component but apparently not. Like you say if you don't know you would never work it out
Another brilliant video…always entertaining and never a dull moment… great stuff .. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍darren
Hi Alan a nother great video, very interesting, look forward to your next video.keep them coming..
Hi Alan 👋 and. Monerk nice to see you both back iam Billy cars ❤❤🎉🎉😂😢😢😮😅😊
Just had the chain replaced on my 2016 galaxy(mk5 mondeo in a biggger body) so same 2.0 tdci engine, had chain, tensioner cambelt water pump, all gaskets, and seals(a lot needed) also had to replace the leak off pipes, and a fuel pipe ,all genuine ford parts including labour £1400 to do job,but still feel it was worth the investment although a lot of money,by the way plastic guide had just gone thru to the metal,so caught it in time so no other damage 👍👍
excellent
excellent
Oh and it was on 204500 miles at the time👍
Really enjoy your longer videos
Amazing knowledge and great video (as always). Alan, could you please be so kind and give part numbers of the cam chain and chain tensioner? Regards from Poland.
Another Great Video Alan , Hello Monika and congratulations !!
Great learn about the cams and how to line them up. As there is no cam locking tool, to check the back of the cams line up. With the front timing marks. Will you be doing a oil change before starting the engine?
Hope you are staying safe and well
Nice work as usual. Very interesting.
Thank you! Cheers!
Looking forward to the next video Alan and I'm glad it's picking up again . I think you could easily get 300k with a bit of care like checking fluids weekly I think it would avoid engine failure
I think your SIGMA is a 18-35 F 1.8 not 2. It's a beast of lens, love it.
Another great video Alan, how did you find the mondeo mk1 and mk2 1.8td? Slow but bomb proof?
Another good video, I like to see problem solving
cheers remus
Yes Steve taxis are lucky to have you
At 11 min you can clearly see the fracture lines of the twisted lobes on the camshaft.
Nice one Alan , your a top man that knows his stuff.....👍 It's a pity the drivers aren't as sharp when it comes to tapping and banging noises coming from the front end as they drive along........😡
Cheers mate , looking forward to the conclusion....👍
Thanks 👍yensabi
If you take Japanese engines, believe me you will not find a tiny part of this French bs on them. Now I am having mk4 with snapped cambelt should be a detective to work on it. And it was pretty noisy before.
Another fantastic video alan pleasure to watch. Far more interesting than the bloody news. I have a focus st tdci with this dw10 engine in . Only got 35k on her. I'll look after it and keep her serviced and I hoping she'll be a good one! Keep those videos coming next time I have a trip to Royston I may just call in and see you haha!!
that would be great ..get a selfie with you lol, have a good day mrRitchie
@@alan4x will do I go to Bassingbourn then head bk to a1 so would be on way I guess. I learn loads of videos I'm working for a hire company and look after centurion traffic transit dropside chassis cabs you'll have probably seen em down there Adblue faults turbos egr failed wet belts you name it they keep me busy but I learn a bit about diagnostics of you if you've not heard of forscan it's a dealer standard Ford software which is very good next best thing to IDS etis it tell you everything which may be useful to you having a fleet of these motors
Excellent tutorial once again we are spoiled. Could you get some prices on what new stuff would have cost -just for a laugh.
You have been very lucky with the rockers
Cracking video, nothing nice about a traffic/vivaro🤮,looking forward to part two.👍🇬🇧
cheers andy
Great vid again Al well spotted with the cam shaft very informative seee ya later dude
Hi Alan, I’m having my timing belt & water pump done today at a garage on my mk5 2016. for £411 inc v.a.t. Is there any tips you can give me on collecting it this afternoon. Like what to look for ect antifreeze check. Is there anything else? cheers Davey 👍
Hi Alan. Is it possible to inspect the crankshaft from under a 1.8 TDCI ford engine. Engine will not be removed from the car, rather all work performed from underneath the car. Car is a 2010 6sp Smax? Thanks.
Hi Alan hope you are staying safe and well
You will soon be at 27,000 subscribers
I'm looking to buy a 2016 Ford Mondeo Diesel estate. Does it have belt or chain? I've been told if chain it will cost a lot more to change.
if it is a 2litre diesel, it will have a belt that you change at 125k miles and a chain that will probably need changing around 200-250k miles
that's what the radio is for. if there's a noise coming from the engine then you turn up the volume and pretend it's not there😁
As ever a truly excellent and informative video 👍👍
Thanks Allen 👍
You are very welcome andrew
Cracking vid Alan. So is that the same duratorq engine thats used in my kuga 2.0tdci?
if its after 2015 it will be
Yes we like it Alan!! Do you know if a rear spring on a mk IV can be changed without spring compressor?
What can I salvage from a seized engine? My Ford focus mk3 has a snapped cambelt. The starter motor clunk's but car doesn't start, after driving at 70mph and hearing a noise before "Bang" it snapped.
Allen
How lucky is this car it must have a oil change and can you tell me what is average millage these engine will go for what millage has a engine lasted until scraped it would be interested to know great video
Phil in stoke
hi phil, not scrapped one yet unless it blew up but these engines if looked after should outlive the car, from 200k miles onwards you may need to change timing chain and tensioner but the engines should do much much more,,we have some on 350k miles and still good
Have the same engine with 290k miles it may need some chain maintenance!what do you recommend
Keep hoping a galaxy might pop up, hardly any youtube videos on them :)
yeah, we don't have any galaxy here
We do like to see the destruction on those engines and the reasoning behind it ! Thanks for the great vid! By the way will the car not come up with a message on the dash for low oil pressure and engine issues straight after the event?
Hi Alan, could you please help me with a problem I have with my mk4 titanium x auto. When under load I have a noise like a valve is passing and the rev counter drops up and down. It sounds like its in-between gears and sometimes the sound is really bad. I have contacted several garages, 2 of them Ford main dealers and nobody can tell me what this noise is. I can't be the only one that's had ghis fault. Have you come across this? Thanks for any help. Please keep the vloggs coming, they're great. Clive.
Hi Alan I’m not to far from you tried getting in contact with you just wanted to know how much would you charge for a cambelt replacement
Great work. Very informative 👍
It must really be frustrating Alan when you've taken time and done such a good job on an engine, only for it to go back to the idiot that caused this carnage which could have been avoided if the person had a brain.
lol, the way i see it now...it all makes for videos
@@alan4x Very true lol 👍if the world had no idiots you'd be out of a job Alan.
Any upcoming transit video coming as I see you have one
not yet but maybe
Hi Alan, Why do these engines have both a timing belt and a timing chain ? Thanks.
its just the way they designed the engine, the cam belt drives the exhaust camshaft which is connected to the inlet camshaft via a chain
@@alan4x Thanks for explaining.
Great video Alan so bloody hurry up and get your next video done lol, seriously you make great videos
lol, Working on it, cheers adrian
That’s brilliant that car sales have. Picked up
Excellent video! Thanks 👍
This seems to be a recurring issue at around 250K miles. Considering its less ball ache to prevent the problem at either the 200K timing belt change or separately at 250K for you to do the chain and tensioner change?
it is a lot of work so we only change them when needs to be done, as there are 100 taxis
Its more work but as it can have much more severe cosequences with the shells going through lack of oil. Mind you they should be good for another 250k miles on the back of it...
Available in any colour as long as it's red :-)
lol
Currently have a mk4 1.8 tdci and thinking of getting a mk5 1.6 petrol or a 2.0 petrol. Which one should i go for? I am looking for reliablility not for a sporty car
not sure about the petrols but i would go for 2litre as 1,6 would be underpowered with such a large car
Like i said before….
The Man,beast,LEGEND😉
I love the way he curse 😅 holly sh*t
I have mk3 and mk4 mondeo’s amazing cars
Thank You Alan for shearing your knowledge God bless You
cheers sead😁
Lol 😊 Alan
Hi mate I’m having real trouble with one of these engine! Will not start unless easy started then it runs lumpy and smokes, then will clear and be fine till
Next day same thing again! New high pressure pump fitted as it had low pressure faults, there now gone but still problems! Injectors tested aswell all good any ideas thanks
difficult to say, you would think there would be codes to go on, might be worth checking cam belt timing ...also had a few of these engines with low compression, are you sure the fuel is good as sometimes petrol can be added by mistake at the pumps
THAMKIOU❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Why do Steve's use all Ford's? Would a Toyota or something not be less hassle? Genuine question. Love the channel 😂😂
Good one. 👍
cheers peter
Hi Alan I have a ford smax tdci mk1 2ltr with a low voltage obd code p02e2 and alot of oil in my air intake and its got a growling noise coming from my air intake induction box at back of engine that connects to the turbo any ideas what this could be mate thnks micky b
i would get your turbo impeller checked out as sounds like the bearing is worn and causing excessive movement in your turbo impeller which can put excess oil into your intake pipe and worse cause the engine to run on its own oil which may destroy the engine
0:40 👀 Transit content would be interesting
yes, will get round two them at some point
Do you ever do a powershift on your cars? I would be interested in observing a TH-cam segment on one. Thanks in advance
no all these cars are manual
I thought timing chains were the best thing ever compared to cambelts !.I've actually seen more timing chain failures lately than belts and modern belts have a longer service service life than chains !
There is a school of thought that says an engine with a cambelt that gets changed regularly is more reliable than a cam chain
Is the MK5 in ya video on its 3rd timing belt
Are chains changed after a certain mileage ?
More footage of Monica
Love your videos. However my only down is that you don't reply to comments 😩. On another video about headlight I asked if you can confirm the part number/description of all the bulbs, e.g low beam H7 etc. I wanted to convert all my bulbs to led but require the bulb numbers. If you can kindly respond I will be much obliged. Thanks.
Excellent stuff
Why is she up there now ? What happen to her being in the garage ?
Did you fish the broken tooth out?
Great video
Thanks!
Alan, as you work on the Mk5’s quite a lot I have a question for you about my MK6 fiesta ZS TDCI regarding the gearbox. Do you have any contact information so I could send in my full question, Regards
Like my father's first rule of the road "Always keep your bl☆☆dy eyes open ! " it seems to apply to car mechanics too ! 😁😂😃😅😄😃😂😁😀😅😄😃😂
How do I contact you pal, I've got an issue with my mk5 mondeo my garage can't or refuses to fix so I'm going to have to try and do it myself as I can't afford to scrap 9k worth of car cheers
hi I am am abroad at the moment but if you leave your fault here I will try to hep
@Alan Howatt much appreciated m8 🙏I'm getting a low fuel pressure reading and the car will not start,I've changed the fuel filter which didn't work,I've stumbled across your video since my last message about the failed spring in the high pressure fuel pump so I think my only option is to strip it myself, get to that part and see if that's the issue before buying a new fuel pump,I was panicking because my local garage said the car was scrap because of this issue and I can not afford to scrap it,I've had it for 2 years and it's only done 77000 miles, it's the 1.6 duratorq engine really appreciate the reply thanks 🙌
@@08dangler hi. I am not familiar with the 1.6 engine as we only have 2litrs engines so not sure if your fuel pump is the same but if it is I would definitely check out that spring and I have also come across the gear on the back of the pump can snap off
@@alan4x much appreciated m8 I've given your channel a subscribe enjoy your hols thank you 👍
Good job alan and mone❤❤🎉🎉😂😢
Allen what camera are you using?
Help needed
canon 90d with canon 10-18 lens for walking around and canon 80d with sigma 18-35 for most filming as the 1.8 aperture gives me plenty of brightness, then my apple iPhone 6s for the places i cant fit other cameras lol
Thank you very much.
Just too keep this thread going 😃
What Software Suite do you use
What computer do you use
What energy supplier do you use
Etc etc etc
Just kidding
I'm looking at a mk4 mondeo 2.0tdci later today, any tips or things to watch out for? Tb/wp done recently on it. Reliable engine?
Oil changes on time. Most important things on these engines.
How dare you miss Monica ????? the last video ?? come on man .. We cant have a video whit 0 Monica.
TAHANKIOU. ALAN
😊🙃
These engines seem to be a bit crap and troublesome?
Did Ford hire some BMW engineers since timing chains snaps
Maestro ! .......... and I don’t mean Austin.......
lol
Hey, nothing wrong with an Austin Maestro. I had one as a company car once. They tended to grow on you after you got used to them, mind you, do did skin cancer ! But it still did 180,000 miles before the lease was up. I was so happy to get my first MK2 Mondeo (a white 1.8TD estate)
I think that a 5w30 oil would make this timing last for a lot longer .. but for the sake of another drop of fuel saved ford skimps on reliability using a 0w30 piss water oil
Really good videos. These engines are in my opinion, needlessly complicated. In the past, cams were driven by duplex chains and lasted very well. Cost cutting meant that simplex chains were used and were not as good. I have never been a fan of cam belts. A cheapening of engine design. The best set up was gear driven cams as used by Volvo and early Ford 1.6 Diesels.I have owned and driven taxis since the 90's and have repaired Taxis since the 70's and some drivers will drive them until they are seized up. The majority of your cars are private hire, so it grates on me that you describe then as Taxis, which they are not. Only Hackney Carriages are Taxis.
The Hackney carriage is very much a London thing. Out in the shires (Steve's taxi's are based in rural Cambridgeshire) taxi's tend very much to be private hire. In the larger city's the London system of "hail and ride" works well but you will find 90% of these drivers will also be on a company circuit for private hire work
Bit of an achilles heel those tensioners eh
yes they certainly are lol
Can't believe that a company somewhere doesn't do a heavy duty version of them
The driver probably had to turn up the volume on the radio to drown out the engine noise !
