My New GG1 Locomotives From Ebay Arrived! Unboxing & Test

  • I was browsing Ebay a few weeks ago and stumbled across this lot of two GG1 locomotives. They were being sold for a price which I thought was pretty good so I decided to order them. The seller didn't say much about the condition of these locos so I wasn't sure what to expect. Surprisingly one of them runs almost perfectly, the other one by Rivarossi didn't seem to start however I'm confident that with a little work it will be riding the rails again. I'm overall pretty pleased with this lot.

Sorry for the extremely long comment, but there aren’t many men left who operated GG-1’s.
While you have fun with GG-1 model railroading. Which is admirable. I was lucky to have operated GG-1 locomotives. From March 1974 to July of 1976 as a Firearm and from July 1976 until their retirement in1983 on NJTRO as a Locomotive Engineer. I Operated the GG-1s as Locomotive Engineer and as a Firearm,on the North East Corridor from Sunny Side yard in Queens NYC to Penn Station NYC on to Union Station Washington DC. or to Harrisburg PA and also to South Amboy NJ. These Locomotives were a pleasure to operate.you had to really pay attention to throttle positions, speed and amperage draw. There are 21 throttle positions. You had to come out one notch at a time on the throttle. You could only draw a limited amount of amperage 800 to 1,200 amperes until you got to 15 mph. When the AC Traction Motors would engage. There are rubber padded tickler motors that got the locomotive going until you hit around 15 mph. Then you couldn’t go over a certain amount of amperage,2,100 amperes while using the sanders. Let me put it this way. If you didn’t know how to use the throttle, in conjunction with the speed and amperage in a certain order. You would trip out the pantograph relay. Which had a specific procedure to reset it. It took a few months of training to learn how to fully operate the GG-1. It was used in Passenger and Freight. When the Self Propelled Multiple Unit BUD Metroliner cars were being retired. (These Self Propelled Metroliners were fun to operate but were extremely unreliable). The GG-1 was used in their place briefly in Metroliner Service in the mid 1970’s when the Amfleet cars started being put in service. Until its replacement, the AEM-7 Locomotives were being built and put into service.
On the early Amfleet Metroliners, you would have a GG-1, a mail car converted to Head End Power, to provide Electricity to the 3 to 5 Amfleet Coaches. This Locomotive would go 100MPH and more with ease. The speed indicator maximum is 100MPH. If you lost any time and started running late. I would have the speed indicator buried on tracks where maximum speed was 120MPH. During this time. If the Metroliner was more than 5 minutes late at its final destination. The passengers would be refunded their money and rode for free. You had to get the train up to maximum speed as fast as possible, brake for speed restrictions at the last possible second then get the train right back up to maximum speed at all times. (When the AEM-7’s were finally put in service. It was a lot easier to be on time. They were allowed maximum speed of 125MPH have electro pneumatic braking. That holds the brakes on electrically while charging the Air Brake System, then allows instant brake release. Works great for slowing down for speed restrictions. The AEM-7’s also had Dynamic Braking that help when going down steep grades. Especially when going downgrade in the tunnels.) Back to the GG-1,Along with the 12 drivers and 8 trolleys. It rode really smooth at 100MPH plus. The GG-1 was the most reliable Locomotive I’ve ever operated. I never had one break down on any of the many Passenger and Freight Trains that I operated pulling these trains. Two GG-1’s were used regularly on Timetable Scheduled Freight Train Numbers TV23 and TV24. These are Truck Trains and generally Two GG-1’s were used to pull these until Conrail retired them. The few times I operated the TV23 & TV24 Freight Trains in the late 1970’s. I remember having over 100 TTX Cars that each held a tractors trailer, trailer. These Locomotives would easily pull these Truck Trains and easily get up to their maximum speed of 60MPH. When pulling conventional old school passenger coaches. One GG-1 would easily pull 14 coaches and get them up to 80 MPH with ease. They had a Steam Generator that would easily produce 150lbs of Steam Pressure in the cold weather to provide heat for the coaches. Two GG-1’s would easily pull Amtraks long distance trains at 80 MPH that would sometimes(during certain holidays) have up to 25 coaches, including a baggage coach and usually a few Mail coaches. I once pulled the Ringling Brothers,Barnum Bailey Circus Train from Sunny Side Yard ,Queens NYC to 30TH Street Station Pennsylvania. I don’t remember how many coaches in total there were. I do remember it was temporarily stored on two LIRR freight Tracks that were parallel with the running tracks leading out of Sunny Side Yard to the East River Tunnels. My guess is there had to be at least 40 coaches. With two GG-1’s it pulled the Circus Train up to its maximum speed of 80MPH with ease.
As I’m getting older, I’m starting to forget many aspects of the GG-1. That at one time I basically knew every inch of this locomotive. If you would like to know what was involved with operating this Locomotive. Let me know and I’ll gladly provide any information that I can.

The GG1 has always been one of my favorite locomotives of all time. I've got several by IHC (i think) that my dad bought me when he found them in a PRR Christmas starter set. He got to see them flying through his home towns of Darby, Colwyn, and South Philadelphia growing up and well into his working years.(he just turned 73). The GG1 is the 1 locomotive we both love above all others. Frequently visit the preserved samples and he loves to reminisce seeing them pass by.
    Great video!

    Excellent haul Harrison.
Looks like you've got your GG1 livery bases covered with just needing a bloody nose Amtrak, a Conrail black dip and an American Railroad Association (IIRC) light blue.
One last thing though as you make this old trucker/ warehouseman cringe just a little opening boxes so if I might offer a bit of advice for near certain every time damage free opening.
Slit the side tape first then lift the flaps so you've got a bit of tent shape and then slit the top tape.
Done that way your blade never actually penetrates the actual interior area of the box.

Hey SMT, I wanted to let you know what that Tuscan red GG1 was. That is by IHC. As you can see it is numbered 4910. I actually have the exact same one and I got it in a train set. From my knowledge they were only sold in train sets. They have 2, 5 pull motors and wiegh close to 2 pounds. They can pull around 30 cars.

I think I know why that IHC one has a lean to it. Mine was the same when I got it. Ran super smooth, but leaned to one side like that. The problem was the plastic tabs on the frame that support the body are not very sturdy and one of them had broken off. If it's still laying around inside the motor compartment (which was luckily the case with mine), a bit of super glue and a day of cure time can fix it right up. If it's not still there, it probably wouldn't be too difficult to put some kind of alternative support under the frame for it just behind the truck tower. (basically just use a bit of bass wood or plastic to make a bar to go under the frame and support the body while allowing the truck to slide on it during turns. I've put some thought into this just in case the glue joint on mine snaps off again, lol
From what I've seen so far though, these (IHC GG1 Premier) are fantastic runners. Probably one of the best performers I have. I also couldn't believe how heavy it was, it's like couple lbs.! My only complaint is the above mentioned truck supports, and the wire connecting the shell to the chassis that allows current pickup from the pantographs. I clipped mine and will just install a plug for it later if I ever have live catenary. But other than those things, they're awesome!

PRR Green GG1 looks to be a custom paint job judging by the glossiness of the unit and the stripes look like decals. Also, a note about your dummy GG1: many manufactures used ink pad printing for lettering, numbers, and other things such as stripes. I suspect the ink on the stripes as faded due to age and deterioration of the ink. Mater of fact, it may have at one time looked crisp as the PRR Tuscan Red GG1 that you just acquired.

Just bought an IHC GG-1 (Conrail) Looks almost new, but it does not run. It just hums. Any suggestion about how to mend it?

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

If its making a humming noise it's likely jammed. The oil could be dry or there could be something stuck in the gear box.

Hey SMT if you see this, could you please buy a Southern Pacific 0-6-0, the number is 1274. If your wondering why it was my very first steam locomotive in Ho scale, but it’s broken. I would be so happy and nostalgic if you do. Thank you, also if you do buy it could you make a video of it.
