Very Bizarre HO Locomotive - Will it Run? Canadian Pacific DD40

  • A buddy of mine was at a train show in Montréal Canada recently and found this super bizarre HO scale Athearn Canadian Pacific DD40 diesel locomotive being sold for one Canadian dollar. He figured it would be something I'd want to add to my collection so he bought it. This locomotive clearly hasn't run in quite a long time since there was no motor and many drive components were missing. Today I try to see if we can make it run again.

    Interestingly, EMD never built a DD40, not even a demonstrator. It never left EMD's drawingboard. They went from the DD35s to the DD40X, so technically the model DD40 is a fantasy engine.

    It's almost identical to the EMD DD35. The major difference being all the same size rooftop radiator fans in the middle of the long hood and the dynamic brake blisters. The EMD DD35 was two GP35 diesels back to back on a single frame with a common cab. It lacked the flaring at the middle roof line.

    • @SpaceCowboyfromNJ
      @SpaceCowboyfromNJ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am 99.999% sure that actually is a the DD35. I was recently buying a bunch of broken locomotives on ebay and there were two sellers selling non running a "DD40" Not really looking to much into it I decided to throw an offer towards both sellers figuring one may accept my offer. Well both did so I wound up with what I thought would be two DD40s, however when I actually got both in hand I realized one is like an inch shorter than the other and the cabs were slightly different. Doing a bit a research I realized the slightly shorter one must actually be the DD35 which is identical body style wise to this one he just restored. on the DD40 there is no over hang over the windshield.

    • @williammcgeehan3424
      @williammcgeehan3424 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SpaceCowboyfromNJ It has two extra radiator fans on top that the DD35 didn't have. It's a concept model that EMD never built. They probably didn't build it because of the problems they had with the GP-35 and the DD35. The DD35 boosters were built before the DD35 with the cabs. The boosters didn't have the flared out radiator screens in the middle of the long hood and they were literally two GP-35s back to back on one frame with no cab.

    • @SMTMainline

      @@tommurphy4307 I personally haven't had many issues with Athearn locomotives aside from a couple of Ready to Roll products from the mid to late 2000s, but even then, it's mainly just the headlight bulb wires making contact with the drive shafts and causing some noise and binding issues when they go around curves. Haven't had any issues with the blue box and current Genesis models! Same goes with Scaletrains as well, both brands have performed exceedingly well!

    Super. I 💙 double diesels. ALCOs C-855, GEs U-50 and U-50C, and EMDs DD-35, DD-40, and DD-40AX are right up there, but my favorite locomotive is the Lima (Baldwin) twin V-8 powered Tr-2500 center cab diesel transfer locomotive. After reading all 254 comments, some of which had good info, and some not so much, just so everyone knows, this is a DD-40, technically a DD-40 A (Cab) unit, a model EMD had plans for, but never managed to sell even one to any railroads at all. (I wonder who Athearn knew back then?) An interesting fact is the first DD-35 was a cabless unit, and not called a DD-35B until after the cab (DD-35A) unit was produced, and then only by modelers. It was designed to work between two GP-35s, and the locomotives were officially known as DD-35 and DD-35A units and sold to the UP and SP, but they apparently forgot that "B" meant cabless. For the rivet counters, and easy spotting for the rest of us, the DD-40 and DD-40AX units have three large cooling fans for each diesel engine, while the DD-35 has two large and one small cooling fan for each diesel engine. (Edit: Also a dynamic brake fan for each set of trucks.) After EMD upped the GP-40s V-16 diesel to make 3,300 horsepower and designed and installed a safety cab and Dash 2 electrical components for the double diesel, UP ordered a bunch, and the Union Pacific DD-40AX 6,600 horsepower double diesel safety cab "Centennials" were born, which meant that the DD-40 was history. I much prefer the DD-35B unit as the roofline still looks like two GP-35s stuck together, without the extra large hump over the radiators, like the DD-35A, DD-40, and DD-40AX have. As to the one versus two motor comments, this locomotive was offered with a choice of one or two motors. (I'm not sure if non-motor DD-40 dummy units were available + who would buy a non powered version of the largest road diesel available?) Trust me, one motor was adequate to pull almost any model railroads entire inventory of rolling stock quite easily, but two motors added more horsepower, probably satisfied some egos, and allowed the locomotive to be heavily weighted, allowing you to pull 100 car trains without stressing the motors as much. Thanks again, an excellent video, and hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

    You can use your soldering iron on the tube to shrink it as opposed to a flame. I’ve seen that done on a couple other videos.

    Harrison you seem to be taking the Vice Grip Garage approved method for dealing with problems ( though with model trains rather than cars) and do the right thing and pretend we didn't see that. On behalf of VGG Nation I'll dub you an honorary feller. I used to dismantle those old blue box Athearns and give them the Harrison treatment right out of the box with a proper lube and white grease treatment, run a file over the gear teeth faces to smooth and mold separation lines and solder wire to replace the pick up clip and I got those 30 dollar BB Athearn locos running as quiet and creep speeds on par with 100 120 dollar Stewart locos. Evergreen plastics makes styrene rod of various sizes and one of the reasons why when I build models keep the sprues ( at least a couple old model boxes full) as there was more than a couple times I either dug out some Evergreen or sprue segment, notched a key in the piece to match the keyway in the worm gear coupling and MacGyvered a new drive shift. Being a pack rat helps. Used to pick up washers and bits of junk for weighing down rail cars and picked up 3 of these huge honking washers figuring one day I might need to do a special car or something but never did. Two weeks ago I'm building my late wife's Enterprise A kit and in a bone head move epoxy the darn thing sideways to the way it supposed to fit to the base and is now nose heavy, after a D'OH!! that would make Homer Simpson proud and some extra choice spicy words I dimly remembered something about those washers, dug out my old train tool box and in a move that would have made Scotty proud saved the Enterprise by counter balancing the base with the washers. Never throw anything away like that. Yep an old Burlington DD40 by those catwhiskers on the nose.

    Cut the wood in half, add a heat shrink sleeve between pieces. It's a cheap u-joint (for tight curves). ! No head light added?

    Locomotives in liverys
    I find these models interesting because I'd never imagine a locomotive that a company never owned in their livery

    I really hate to post a counter opinion, but I believe that one fly wheel motor is straining. So if you can I strongly suggest you add a second one at your convenience.
