Vintage Ho Engines Mail Unboxing - Can't Believe Someone Would Send These!

  • For months a member of the community has been suggesting I get a set of box cutters. A box arrived a few days ago with some which really nice but I was even more surprised to find five different ho engines. Each of these are really interesting, the most notable one being an 1984 SP "Olympic" from Athearn which is a type of loco I've wanted for years. I would like to give a big thanks to Anton Bruce for sending these engines!

    Harrison...glad you approve!!!! That Olympic paint scheme was the one SP created for the 1984 Olympics here in Los Angeles. And the yellow SW1500? That was going to get decals for the Quail Valley, I just never got to finish it. And I'm surprised they ran - they haven't run in several years.
    And you are more than welcome!!!!

    Your wonderful video is a beauty way to go! The Quail 4-6-2 Mehano Pacific can run even better after you clean the wheels/contacts. If you notice, the tender also has pick-ups. I have a Canadian National 4-6-2 of the same-and what I did with it was this: The tender has a "back-up" light or directional light. When you open up the tender shell, you can locate the left and right-side pick-up wires for that light and solder wires to them, long enough to reach the locomotive motor. Attach those wires to the motor and you have now increased electrical pick-up connectivity for your locomotive. MINT! From three wheels per side, you've increased it to five wheels per side for connectivity.
    Again, wonderful videos... I'm close to being 52 years old but am very entertained and quite informed on the electrics of locomotives. Yes, I am also a faithful watcher of "Sams Trains" of which I have crossed-informed information between you and him with great dedication of my appreciation in learning of how you two fellows have taught me how to maintain locomotives.
    Harrison, thank you. Your passion has increased my motivation to get my trains back on track.
    Your efforts are a gift in my eyes. Thank you! John Kamloops, BC

      @antonbruce1241 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting...I never thought about soldering those wires when I had that 4-6-2. Maybe Harrison can do that now that my old Quail Valley 4-6-2 is in his capable hands.

    SD40-2T is an SP "tunnel" loco. The Espee ran through a lot of tunnels and snow sheds. Air intakes, at their normal upper body location, drew in exhaust laden air in the tunnels. The air intake was lowered to allow cooler, "cleaner" air to be brought into the engine compartment.

    Brilliant, yes, that's the word for this unboxing video, Harrison. Very Continental usage of the word. 👍 Those switchers belong in the yard prepping freight car manifests for the Mainline. Now you have a couple more steam locomotives to run in the livestreams. See, you don't need to buy anymore locomotives, they magically appear in the PO Box.
    Thanks for sharing. 👍 👍 👍

Only Athearn switcher I have is a Burlington Northern SW1200 that I bought at an antique store in West Plains, MO! The cool thing was that the previous owner had tricked it out with a beacon and spark arrestors on the stacks! Pretty darn good runner too!

    EMD SD40-2 SP Olympic 7347 in ho scale the real sized model was a EMD SD40R which was wrecked/scraped 8/85 at Westminster, Colorado while on the Burlington Northern rail lines. Athearn made it as a EMD SD40-2 unit during the time period that Southern Pacific was promoting the Olympics in 1984.

    That Olympic SP SD40-2 is a fairly rare Athearn model. The real locomotive was a straight SD40 which Kato made, but they never offered one in that scheme. SP never rostered any real SD40-2s, all of their Dash-2 units were tunnel motors. Nice haul...

    The SP unit is supposed to be a SD40R, an in house rebuild of the standard SD40's. But Athearn didn't offer it at the time so they just used an SD40-2 chassis, you can tell its not a Tunnel Motor by the lack of the radiator intakes on the rear of the locomotive.

    There is a TH-cam video, " IRM's CB&Q 9911A overtakes a stack train going to Galesburg ", where the E5 is passing a freight on a double track. The freight has 3 diesels; the lead unit is a Tunnel Motor.

  • @antonbruce1241
    @antonbruce1241 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    FYI...the SD40T-2 was created for the SP for use on the north/south runs up through Tehachapi and all the tunnels between here and up north. They were lovingly referred to as "tunnel motors". I bought that model in 1984, when Athearn released them.
    And yes - you pronounced Quail correctly.

    • @Killer-Of-Night
      @Killer-Of-Night 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The reason there’s a T in the SD40T-2 is because it has a tunnel motor, which means the air intakes were moved to the bottom of the carbody, so it’s easier to get air inside of tunnels.

    Smt after seeing this video of the black Athern blue box switcher I must say that I have one Just like that it was given to me years ago by a friend who loved model railroading (May he rest in peace). I'm sure it's over 30 years old because of the use it's had. It's Missing all it's rails we had it cleaned out as it was filled with cat hair (which the previous friend had lots).And we fixed a gear on it and replaced the missing part it had which is the steps on the trucks. I still have that locomotive to this day and all I can say is that thing is bulletproof it had sat a couple years and all it needed was oil and that little engine pulls a surprising amount of cars by itself! mine is painted the Southern Pacific paint scheme!

    • @antonbruce1241
      @antonbruce1241 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The yellow engine I sent Harrison was one that I got at a club show/swap meet on the cheap, as it didn't run and was an "undec". I gave it some TLC, some wiring, some cleaning, and low and behold it ran like all get out. I was going to make it my next QVRR (Quail Valley Rail Road) switcher, but just never finished it.
      FYI...Quail Valley's colors are red logo and lettering on a yellow background.

    From what I understand that Olympic SP SD-40T is contraband locomotive. Athearn did not get permission to use the Olympic logo and had to pull them from the store shelves. I’m not entirely sure how true that is. They’re pretty common (as in you can find them on eBay all the time). I went ahead and added both the powered and unpowered to my collection years ago. Whatever the case may be they’re really nice and unique examples of an Athearn Blue Box locomotive.

    I wonder why Athearn used a SD40-2 body on the Olympic unit. It should use a standard SD40 body. The Dash-2 cab has a few differences, and there is a small window on the engineer's side near the radiator section. The original SD40s did not have those. The actual engine is an SD40R. A rebuilt SD40. SP never had standard SD40-2s, but they did have SD40T-2s, which are known as tunnel motors. Either way, those models look awesome.

    May want to consider tracking down some steel mill bottle cars ( think Walthers made some years ago),some battered crusty gondola spacer cars and equally crusty looking transfer caboose because those switchers just scream steel mill and while a steel mill is practically a layout in itself nothing says you can't run a bottle train from an off layout blast furnace to an equally off layout mill operation
