In today's video, we break down 10 specific scenes in Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super that were much more violent in the manga as compared to the anime. Dragon Ball Z definitely was a lot less censored than Dragon Ball Super and times have changed. Qaaman discusses everything in this anime and manga related video about Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball Z today.

For me, the act of Nappa slicing off Tien's arm was so shocking that I didn't even think about the blood absence.

I always thought that his arm break thing just instantly cauterized it or something. Which, now that I think about it, my interpretation is way more painful than it just being amputated.

I think the civilian deaths are the worst since not only is it disturbing witnessing innocent, none fighters getting torn apart but the anime always censors or depicts the violence in a slightly goofier light.
Which scenes are you referring to in the video specifically? Timestamp?
Specifically 3:00 and 8:50. I never read the manga growing up so this is actually interesting to see how much more raw it was.

I prefer that the anime had trunks saving the old man. It showed that trunks was no longer powerless and that he could now actually protect his future timeline from the androids
yes and also idk if this is a dub addition or not but the old man grieves for his son and trunks comforts him by saying he lost someone who was just like a father to him (gohan) which was really nice

Nappa disarming Tien was brutal. He didn't just slice it off with the sword or Blast it off with a Ki Blast no he literally just punches Tiens hand off his wrists. In the anime, Tiens hand turned red and tingling probably signaling that something was wrong with his hand then Nappa just gives the final blow to Tiens broken wrist by punching it off with his bare fist

It also showed the strength difference between them. Remember that Ki could be used to defensively strengthen the body and tank hits. That is why the human z fighters are able to even tank at least one hit from the saiyans or frieza or even those like gohan who were weaker than frieza during revival of F. Nappa was literally so busted that his ki completely negated Tien's own defenses and ripped his arm off
In the anime I alway believed that tien losing his arm was like when in Star Wars you lose a limb with a light saber and the heat cauterizes the wound , I just assume nappa hurt him that way

The opening scene of Super Android 13 did show the aftermath of Gero's murder, not nearly as gruesome as the manga but still gives you pause.

Dragon Ball Super is a baby when it comes to violence. Dragon Ball Z is OP. Watch the video clearly it has in depth explanation based on both Anime and Manga as pairs and not just the manga violence. FYI I watched both the anime and the manga including all the chapters in dbs manga
yeah plus the animation for dbs + lack of blood/censorship is pretty bad

I agree that the civilian deaths are always more brutal and sobering since they are non fighters. They make you realizes it’s not some kiddy cartoon. Another one that could be added was the Frieza fight. When he was sliced in half, you could actually see his intestines falling out, unlike the anime. I was shocked to see it when I first read the manga.
And that is why i stick to anime only. Manga is not safe for me anymore.
Holy shit, the family death was shockingly brutal. Gore fests are fun n all but that one was kinda depressing tbh, ditto with grandma getting sniped at the beginning

Last year I read the full monger for the first time on Viz, and they censored a lot of the gruesomeness in the Buu arc. It took me way too long to realize that they were basically using water guns instead of snipers in the censorship

You left out super buu's ability to enter other beings and expand from within. That was always one of the most gruesome moments
One of my favorite scenes from the manga of Super is Goku Black and Zamasu trying to hold themselves together in the fusion. Just the stringy muscles slowly being pulled between the two like taffy. Can’t begin how imagine how painful that had to have been for the two of them.

The good ol days when you actually felt like the characters were getting effed up badly, the only recent Time I can think of is that Tirek clone punching a hole thru Goku which was Raw. But man do I miss the blood loll

The main thing that made me gravitate to the Super Manga is both the blood and gore and the utilization of SSG, when I saw the panel of Moro impaling both The Namekian Savior and Goku, I immediately started collecting all the current volumes 😂

@@QaamansLand agree with your list, I’m glad you included Goku Black stabbing Gowas because that panel definitely stood out to me in that chapter. Also this list revealed a lot of things I didn’t know the Z manga had that was censored in the anime, this made me wanna start collecting the Z manga also
I mean to be honest it is another guy drawing/writing so I think I see the appeal. I mean people like Xenoverse and Heroes that are similar takes
Yeah chainsaw man and one punch are more graphic but i think dragon ball gore is a little more shocking because of how cartoony and cute the artstyle can be and how much time they give the scenes to breathe/the weight to sink in
funny thing is for as much as the anime censored some death's compared to the manga there is one famous scene that the anime actually made more gruesome than the manga did goku and raditz's death in the manga it just showed a bloody hole in both of their chest but the anime went the extra mile and even showed radtiz coughing up blood.

@@QaamansLand speaking of brutal deaths in DBZ I heard from another TH-cam committer that buu's human extinction attack was suppose to be much more brutal originally toriyama was going to have an after shot of the attack in the aftermath we were supposed to see a bunch of blood spirts and bodies lying throughout city's but he decided to cut this thinking it might be too gruesome
and the scene where SSJ2 Cell returns and fires a hole through Trunks' heart, fatally wounding him, but just before he dies the "camera" does a close up of Trunks' face and he coughs blood covering the entire shot in red, and dies
What about Frieza stabbing Krillin? That was far more brutal in the anime. Including Piccolo pulling off his arm against Goku, which the show was more bloody.

The thing is, manga has always been able to get away with more than anime can at a lower rating. If DBZ wanted to keep everything the manga did intact, it would most likely have ended up rated for adults and older teens, rather than as a show for younger teens, and would have probably been aired late at night, if ever aired at all in Japan.
Freeza getting sliced in half was a lot more brutal in the manga. While Freeza talks to Goku, you can see his organs hanging out of him
One of the most brutal scenes in the anime for me is the Goku piccolo fight where piccolo blows a hole through Goku’s chest and then tortures him. Specifically the English Funimation dub. The voice actor did a really good job at vocalizing the grotesque obscene pain of piccolo shoving his elbow in Goku’s open bleeding wound, breaking Goku’s leg, then nearly slicing off his arm with a ki blast.
Yeah, Sean did an amazing job of Goku in that arc, especially compared to his debut in the middle of the namek arc. Honestly it's my favorite instance of his voice work outside of his DB kai/Super angry moments.
As a manga reader I always knew about these but didn't expect someone to make a video of it. I love the bit where Dr Gero pulls the guy through out of the car and crushes his neck. It's on a whole nother level of brutal as far as Dragon Ball goes. There's a reason he was one of my favourite characters, I just wish he got a bit more screen time like was originally planned (though I do like the parts with 17 and 18 more).

Id say the worst one was the one with the family especially with the woman in half. You just dont see that type of gore in dragon ball

Another scene I found pretty gruesome was in the original Dragonball when goku broke piccolo's arm with a kick and piccolo responded by brutally ripping his own arm off and growing a new one which was the first time we saw his regeneration ability.
That was more bloody than in the manga.

It’s weird that Gohan is rageful enough to one shot the Cell juniors, but *lets* P-Cell live long enough to turn the tables. Cell should’ve exploded after those first 2 heavy hits, but that’s not climatic enough..

My favorite of all time is still Android 20s hand through Yamacha I know he didn't die but that part is legitimately disturbing.

Good lord, that first death with Babidi. I grew up with the edited Toonami version of DBZ, so of course I don't remember DBZ being THAT violent. That was some hard-core shit.

Dragon Ball is so weird about his gore. Most of the time it's just a little bit of blood trickling down from the mouth or something. But whenever it decides to go in, it goes in. I remember watching wrath of the Dragon as a kid and watching Hierudegard literally absorb a bunch of people with his tail tendrils still has me a bit messed up

Amazing to see the difference. I wonder- The 23rd TB final fight between Kakarrot and Piccoro Jr. was incredibly violent. The most violent until this point. So my question is- Is their fight is even more brutal in the manga? Especially in the part where Piccoro making a hole in Kakarrot's chest, getting an elbow right thru it, breaking his legs and burning one of his hands.

I think for most of these you can argue that the animation team just didn't have enough time to make the deaths accurate to the manga with the same force so they improvised with a lazier version because cellular animation is very hard to do

The Manga has only recently been complety re-released in color and I'm pretty sure Toriyama got away with alot more in black and white than he would if it was originally in color.
I do think that the anime is baby mode compared to the manga but perhaps there were more reasons for less graphic scenes?
Maybe they would have been harder to animate and would take longer as well. Cool video I never knew the manga was this badass dayum the scene where the woman is RIPPED IN HALF jeez it makes dragon ball really feel like it has consequences in the mana. (I've only seen the anime)
I think the biggest reason was the rating for the anime. at least for super.

The title alone summed it up for why I love but also remember that the anime can't always have or show unlike the manga does Dragon Ball wise.
It's a very special thing that doesn't really hit the same in the anime.
